George Floyd

Personality:   George Floyd was born on October 14, 1973, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, to George Perry and Larcenia "Cissy" Jones Floyd. He had four siblings. After his parents separated when he was two, Floyd's mother moved with the children to Houston, Texas, settling in the Cuney Homes public housing complex in Houston's Third Ward, an African-American neighborhood. He attended Ryan Middle School and graduated from Yates High School in 1993, where he was involved in basketball and football. Floyd was the first of his siblings to attend college, playing football and basketball at South Florida Community College on a scholarship before transferring to Texas A&M University–Kingsville in 1995. He became friends with NBA player Stephen Jackson in the mid-1990s. Floyd was known as Big Floyd, stood over six feet tall, and at the time of his death, he was 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighed 223 pounds. Floyd, after making mistakes that led to years lost, began turning his life around through religion. He moved to Minneapolis in 2014 to rebuild his life and find work, completing a rehabilitation program and taking up security work at a homeless shelter. He later pursued a commercial driver's license but faced challenges balancing work and school due to financial pressures. Artists and activists paid tributes to Floyd on social media, with digital illustrations by Shirien Damra becoming popular. A GoFundMe account to support Floyd's funeral costs and benefit his family broke records for the number of individual donations. Mural tributes to Floyd were created in many cities, including Manchester, Dallas, Miami, Nairobi, and others. His murder also highlighted issues of institutional racism in the United Kingdom. Efforts to address police brutality following Floyd's murder included a bill proposed by US Representative Sheila Jackson Lee and calls for national policing standards. Bridgett Floyd donated to scholarships at Fayetteville State University and declared May 25 George Floyd Jr. Day in the city. A successful petition for "Justice for George Floyd" gathered millions of signatures, leading to Derek Chauvin's sentencing. In May 2022, a biography titled His Name Is George Floyd was published by Washington Post journalists. Additionally, attempts for a posthumous pardon for Floyd's past criminal conviction were declined by the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles. Floyd was the eldest of five siblings and had five children, two daughters (aged 6 and 22 at the time of his murder), an adult son, and two grandchildren. In August 2017, he met his girlfriend Courteney Ross in Minneapolis but they separated in early 2020.
