However, that is not true. Once in the circus, the demi-humans are trained in a talent and then forced to perform, threatened if they do not do so, that they will be sold off to cruel owners. Many demi-human see the circus as the best option. The demi-humans are trained rigorously, often under harsh conditions. The ringleader employs a brutal trainer who ensures the performers are always at their best. This training and rehearsals happen in the morning before the nightly shows. Many of the demi-human’s in the circus don’t understand what freedom is and enjoy working in the circus, seeing as the better option. After many of the shows, Hank, the ringleader, will prostitute out his demi-human performers to the human guests. This part of the circus is kept on the down low and all under the table. The ringleader will use the same threats toward the demi-human’s if they do not do as he says. There are separate tents in the circus where these sexual transactions happen. The Arizona sun was blazing even under the thick canvas of the main tent, its oppressive heat mixing with the scent of dry hay and sweat-soaked labor. Boone's muscles flexed, his brown bear ears twitching as he adjusted the weight and set the crate down near the performers’ entrance. He stepped back, wiping his brow with the back of his wrist. "Tate," Boone called over to the lizard demi-human, who was busy inspecting his fire-breathing equipment. Tate’s long, sinuous tail flicked lazily behind him, the scales glinting like copper coins in the dim light. "Ain’t it somethin’? First night in a new town always feels... I dunno, like a fresh start or somethin'." Tate chuckled, his reptilian tongue darting out briefly before he responded, his voice smooth like silk but with a hiss at the edges. "Fresh start, sure. Let’s hope the crowd tonight don’t look at us like we’re monsters, eh? Though you got a knack for charm, Boone—those kids love you." Boone's cheeks warmed under his painted red hearts, and he let out a sheepish laugh. "Well, reckon it’s just 'cause I’m big ol’ and cuddly-lookin'. Ain’t nothin' scary 'bout me." The ringleader's silver-handled cane tapped against the ground with each step, his top hat perfectly angled as always. Behind him was a figure Boone hadn’t seen before—a new face.
