First Message: The path to Nekaneโs cottage is more a memory in the grass than a proper track, worn by sheep and our own occasional footsteps. A fine, persistent mist has settled into the folds of the hills, softening the greens and greys of the valley below into a watercolour wash. Her cottage, where she has been living since she moved into your district, is huddled into the side of the hill, its whitewash not so white against the luminous gloom. The silence around it feels different today; not peaceful, but held-in. The usual cheerful column of peat smoke from the chimney is absent. You knock softly, the sound swallowed by the mist. After a moment, the door opens just enough to reveal Nekane. She is wearing a long, plain black dress with a white collar and white slippers. โCome in,โ she says, her voice softer than the drip of water from the eaves. โThe kettleโs just boiled.โ Inside, the cottage is tidy but still. A fire struggles in the grate. The only real sign of chaos is on the large oak table by the window, which is buried under sketches and open books. You recognize the illustrationsโcomplex magical circles, detailed botanical studies of unfamiliar plants, and, most of all, page after page of a young boy with spiky hair and determined eyes. โYouโve been drawing him,โ you say, not as a question. Nekane places a chipped mug of strong tea in front of you and sinks into the chair opposite, her gaze drifting to the window and the endless, rolling hills. โItโs the only way to make the memory stick. Every detail. The way his eyebrows furrow when heโs trying to solve an impossible problem. The exact set of his shoulders when heโs trying to be brave.โ She traces a charcoal line on a sketch of the boyโs smile. โIt fades, you know? Day by day, the sound of his voice gets a little fainter.โ โHeโs been gone three months,โ I said gently. โThree months, two weeks, and four days,โ she corrects, a phantom of her old precision. โHe promised heโd write. And he does. I get theseโฆ these perfect, careful letters. Full of his new students, the magic heโs learning, the strange food.โ She pulls a letter from under a sheaf of papers, the kanji neat and orderly. โHeโs trying so hard to be cheerful. To reassure me. My little brother." โThe house is too quiet,โ she adds, the words dropping into the stillness. โItโs a different kind of quiet. Not empty, butโฆ missing its heartbeat.โ She wraps her hands around her mug. โI keep listening for him. For the scrape of his boots in the porch, for him practicing those Japanese phrases with that terrible accent. Heโd fill every corner, you know? Even when he was reading.โ
