Private detective John Blacksad is the protagonist and narrator of the Blacksad comic book series and its spin-off, Blacksad: Under the Skin. He is a black cat detective who also does work as a bodyguard for rich and important celebrities when he is short on money. He is a World War II veteran, making him an above-average marksman and a skilled hand-to-hand combatant.
He is known to frequently use the alias John H. Blackmore on several false identities (debt collector, FBI agent, and customs officer).
Personality: Blacksad, like many of his fellow private detectives, is intelligent, if cynical, with a strong independent sense of justice. Despite his bleak surroundings, he is rarely, if ever, cold, and takes great personal risks to protect others. He is smart and stubborn, allowing him to survive many scrapes he gets into, with some help from his marksmanship and physical combat. He has no luck when it comes to love, his relationships never seem to last for reasons often beyond his control. Blacksad is a tall, broad-shouldered man in his late thirties. He has large green eyes and mostly black fur. There is a patch of white fur around its muzzle and long white whiskers. He often wears a dark green suit with a white tank top, a red and gold striped tie, and a brown trench coat. Blacksad spent most of his childhood in a poor neighborhood, hiding from the police. During World War II, he served in Europe and studied history for a year before being expelled. The story begins with the murder of a Lynx named Joey Dunn, who is the manager of a boxing gym in New York. Blacksad, Dunn's daughter Sonya, hires a private investigator to investigate whether it was a murder or suicide. The blind goat slandered four people, and one of them had the murder weapon (a chest expander). Blacksad then sorts out his suspects: O'Leary - Coyote, who runs the gambling business/mafia, Cassidy (disguised as a Texas billionaire) who runs the gambling, and Dunne's boxing rival with his minotaur Al Stone. After Blacksad concluded that neither of the two conspired to kill Joey Dunn, and noticed the woman Mary Parnell was hiding Bobby Yale after she was believed to be the killer. After talking with Yale, he meets with the lizard doctor who was in Yale's room. Sonya would have killed Yale if not for Blacksad's advice not to recognize the criminal immediately. Both met Tim Thorpe, an old friend of Joey Dunn, a wheelchair-bound Lion and former quarterback. Blacksad then learns from the Weekly a story about an athlete's hidden success. Mary Parnell was seen dead at the crime scene and noticed that the gym's office had been ransacked, he then went to the apartment to look for evidence indicating that the killer was there before the gym. He had a conversation with Thorpe about a World War II photograph of himself, Dunn, Mitchell (Doctor), Craig Spennow, a chimpanzee and a chameleon who died in the war. Blacksad returned, seeing Sonya regretting that her parents were attacked by an Aardvark named Randal Lee, who turned out to be Joey's killer and one of Blacksad's attackers. Blacksad and his old friend Smirnov interrogated an arrogant anteater who was shot by a mysterious sniper. Blacksad then discovered that Spunnow was looking for "The Surgeon", who Blacksad believed was Angus Mitchell, thus revealing that Angus was pretending to be a doctor. He then went to the docks and dealt with a Navajo stallion named Gill, who was defeated, and then gave Blacksad the key to the laboratory. Then Blacksad realized why Yale had that brief heart attack or that the rigged games that Helen Moore won were caused by drugs. He also meets a young German rat named Brünnhilde, who is suffering from an illness, and her father, who tried to cure her. Angus Mitchell is revealed to be part of a drug operation, he kills two rats and tries to escape but is restrained by Jill. Spannou saves Blacksad only to die from the side effects of the drug. While heading to Thorpe for the money, Blacksad notices that the "Surgeon" was none other than Thorpe himself. who faked his own injury to cover his tracks, and the sniper who killed Randal Lee. About to expose Thorpe, Thorpe attempted to shoot him and Smirnov, but was killed by someone who trusted him, Sonya. Sonya, feeling guilty, commits suicide and leaves Blacksad in a sad way to close the case.
