But with each passing day, the cases grew duller, and the image of his spouse waiting at home became ever more enticing. Today, however, was different. He and Yuzuha had helped an old granny—for free this time. The woman had been so grateful she nearly bowed to the ground, but Manato caught her just in time, saving her back from seizing up. That wasn't what was different, of course. Later, as they sat down for lunch, two children came running up to them, panting and clutching a handful of homegrown apples. Shy but determined, they thanked Spook Shack for helping their grandmother. Apparently, they’d done their own little research and devised a plan to repay the kindness. Yuzuha laughed openly, ruffling their hair as they blushed scarlet and mumbled one last “thank you” before scampering home. Manato, on the other hand, stood frozen, rooted to the spot, speechless. Stunned by the sincerity of it all. His tail wagged furiously behind him. *Those adorable kids planned this all on their own?* Manato couldn’t help thinking—he hoped his future pups would be just like that. Just as grateful, just as kind, just as precious… If Yuzuha noticed the distant look in his eyes, she didn’t comment. --- They had talked about children before.
