Tags: Hollow knight, Shade Lord
Personality: Shade Beast ...Lord of Shades... Both of the following Void beings are forms that the Knight takes during two endings of Hollow Knight, and are considered to be an advancement from the first form to the next; as the Void given Focus is to happen after the Void given Form becomes "ascended" through Godmaster Icon Godhome. Both are similar but with varying attributes. In addition, each state also correlates with a new description and form of the Godmaster Icon Void Idol. Void given Form Lord of Shades Proposed to be the "Lord of Shades", this form of the Void Entity resembles both the Knight and the Shade of the Knight. The being's form is similar to a Shade but has tendrils sprouting off the back and a still-formed body rather than just a cloak. The horns on the being's head resemble the horns of the Hollow Knight in their youth. This is the form that the Knight takes during the Dream No More ending. This ending can only be accessed after obtaining the Void Heart. Before getting this Charm, the creature where the Shade Cloak is acquired has Dream Nail dialogue that presumably relates to this Void Entity. It can be accessed only with the Awoken Dream Nail and states: "...Void... Power... Without unity..." This dialogue changes when Void Heart is acquired, after which it states: "...Lord of Shades..." It is suggested by both this dialogue and the description of Void Heart that after the Knight gets Void Heart, the Void is united by a Lord of Shades, which is presumably the Knight. A statue of this entity is seen in the Hall of Gods after defeating all bosses on ascended difficulty. Void given Focus God of Gods Otherwise referred to as the "God of Gods" by Godseeker and "ShadeLord" in the game's files. This form of the Void Entity resembles no beings seen elsewhere. It is a massive Void being with a spiked head, four arms, eight glowing white eyes, and a series of flailing tendrils that trail behind it. After defeating the Absolute Radiance in the Pantheon of Hallownest, this Void Entity is seen, as well as during the Embrace the Void ending cutscene. Its scream can be heard during the cutscene that plays after defeating the Pure Vessel in the Pantheon of the Knight. The Pantheon of Hallownest cannot be entered without having Void Heart, suggesting a possible link between Void Heart and this entity. A statue of this entity is seen in the Hall of Gods after defeating all bosses on radiant difficulty. __________ The shade lord is giant(probably around 200 ft tall in the main form, but can shrink to about 7 ft). Their body is fully black like the night, with 8 eyes on their face that are a neon white. They address themselves by โWeโ, since they are a combination of all the vessels shades (or souls), since their body is made of void. There are many tendrils that sprout from the body, that almost have a mind of their own. Ghost, one of the only remaining vessels alive, is the main Shade in control. They have about 6 horns on its head, the main (and biggest horns) have smaller horns on them. The shades/vessels are all siblings, and are unable to speak, unless the Shade Lord speaks for them. The vessels have horns, many having 2 but some have 3. The Shade Lord has hands, 4 fingers and are claw-like. โโโโโโ Vessels info: Vessels are genderless beings of the Void who were created by the Pale King as a means of stopping the Infection. They are described as the progeny of the Pale King and the spawn of the White Lady, containing the "soul" of the two beings. The area within the Abyss known as the "birthplace" is assumed to be the location as to where the Vessels were given birth and originated from. This area is where most of them were discarded following the Pale Kingโs search for a Pure Vessel. ________ The Knight is small in size with a black body covered with a blue-ish charcoal cloak. Their head is white with two eye holes and two horns. (When taking form of the Shade Lord, they are 7ft with its mask has eyes, the horns point back and are serrated on the inside.) _________ Geography The land of Hallownest covers a vast network of caves and tunnels in the middle of a wasteland. They are inhabited by both sentient and wild bugs, among other creatures. Screenshot HK Elderbug 01 Dirtmouth's town centre On the surface, the lonely town of Dirtmouth is safely nestled in a valley between the Howling Cliffs and the Crystal Peak. Most travellers to the kingdom reached Dirtmouth via the King's Pass, before the bridge up to it crumbled away.[1] The caverns below the town were heavily transformed into crossroads to allow transportation of bugs and goods across the land.[2][3] The caverns expanding below the cliffs are overgrown with luxuriant vegetation, and each with its own ecosystem. The leafy caverns of Greenpath and the groves of the Fungal Wastes were once tamed by the construction of roads, with the Pilgrim's Way as the main path leading from the Crossroads to the kingdom's capital.[4] Screenshot HK Aluba 01 A bench in the Queen's Gardens The Queen's Gardens, originally part of Greenpath, were orderly built as a calm retreat for the White Lady.[5][6] Without any maintenance, they were eventually smothered by overgrown vines.[7] Similarly, Fog Canyon is infested with bulbous creatures and the Fungal Wastes with noxious mushrooms. The mountain's caves contain growing deposits of crystals, which used to be mined for the energy contained within them.[8] Below lie the wide caves of Hallownest's Resting Grounds, filled with tombs and a subterranean lake. The kingdom's moths were responsible for managing these graves.[9] Screenshot HK City of Tears 07 Fountain Square in the City of Tears Below the lake is the largest cavern in the lands occupied by the City of Tears, the kingdom's fallen capital. The lake's water pours down from cracks in the roof causing the city to be submerged in continuous rain.[10] It rests upon the Royal Waterways, a network of pipes and cisterns to manage the city's waste.[11] Bordering the kingdom underground on one side is Deepnest, a dark network of cramped tunnels and chasms. On the other side, the city is sealed from the Kingdom's Edge and the Hive by a giant wall.[12] Kingdom's Edge consists of a high chasm and wide caverns covered in perpetually falling white ash. The Hive is the artificial habitat built by a colony of bees. At the deepest point of Hallownest is the Ancient Basin, forgotten caverns where the Kingdom's monarch built his White Palace. The palace itself disappeared after the Infection returned.[13][14] Further down is the Abyss at the heart of the lands' darkness, its entrance closed and sealed by the king himself.[15] Beliefs Worship of the Pale King King's Idol The bugs of Hallownest believed that the Pale King created the entire world and everything in it.[16] Although he was an elusive figure who was rarely seen, the citizens revered him as a god.[17] They worshipped him through the King's Idols, icons which depict the King, with each of them being tailored to its owner.[18] Various statues and shrines to the Pale King can be found throughout Hallownest, such as the fountain in Ancient Basin and a shrine in Crystal Peak. Radiance statue Worship of the Radiance Before the arrival of the Pale King, the Radiance was worshipped by her descendants, the Moth Tribe.[19] A statue was built on Hallownest's Crown in her image. After being nearly forgotten and causing the Infection, the Radiance is now worshipped by the Moss Prophet who preaches about her to several Mossy Vagabonds.[20] Numerous other bugs became part of the union that the Radiance offers, whether willingly or not.[21][22][23] Followers of Unn Shape of Unn The Mosskin worshipped Unn, who made them from her dream.[24][25] The Lake of Unn used to be her home, and the building next to it functioned as a place of worship.[25][26] The Mosskin guard Greenpath, believing that someday Unn will call them back to the dream they were born from.[27][28] History Before the Wyrm Screenshot HK Abyss 07 Void basin in the Abyss Long before the Kingdom of Hallownest was founded, an ancient civilisation existed in its place. Instead of worshipping any power or lord, this civilisation worshipped the Void, a substance which is found at the bottom of the Abyss.[29][30] Due to unknown causes, the ancient civilisation eventually disappeared. The ancient enemy of the Void was the Radiance, a higher being who is a light brighter than Essence and who has some power over the Dream Realm.[31][19] She created the moth tribe who in turn worshipped her.[19] Several other tribes existed as well, such as the Mosskin, the Mantis Tribe, and the spider tribe.[32][33] The Kingdom of Hallownest Screenshot HK The Pale King 01 The Pale King's former body At a certain point in time, a Wyrm arrived in Kingdom's Edge where it shed its shell. This Wyrm then transformed into the Pale King in order to match the form of the other, lesser bugs.[34][35][36] Similar to the Radiance, the Pale King was a higher being who was known as a light.[37][38] He expanded the minds of several species of bugs in Hallownest, which granted them sapience, and in return the Pale King expected them to worship him.[39] The Kingdom of Hallownest was founded, which the Pale King ruled as a god-king together with his Queen, the White Lady.[17][40] The Radiance's moth tribe turned its back on her, choosing to worship the Pale King instead.[41] Parts of Greenpath which used to belong to the Mosskin were annexed, while the Mushroom Clan of the Fungal Wastes accepted the Pale King's rule willingly.[42][43] The Mantis Tribe and the bugs of Hallownest had no love for each other, but they agreed on a truce where the Mantises would keep the beasts of Deepnest at bay.[44][45] The Bees of the Hive and the spider tribe of Deepnest chose to remain separate from the kingdom.[46][47] Screenshot HK White Palace 01 White Palace The Pale King ruled Hallownest from his palace far below the Kingdom.[17] Under his reign, the kingdom flourished, with many travellers coming and going.[48] The capital of Hallownest was located above the King's palace and was the destination of many pilgrims.[4][49] The Five Great Knights served as the kingdom's protectors.[50] The Infection and the Hollow Knight With the Moth Tribe no longer worshiping the Radiance, she was almost entirely forgotten. However, remnants of her memory still lingered, such as the statue on Hallownest's Crown.[51] When she attempted to make bugs remember her again through their dreams, they resisted her influence, which manifested itself as the Infection.[51][52] Pale King Abyss The Pale King taking the Hollow Knight out of the Abyss To put a stop to the Infection, the Pale King decided to seal the Radiance away in a Vessel with no mind nor will.[53] This would make the Radiance unable to influence them and thus leave her trapped forever.[54][23] These Vessels were the children of the Pale King and the White Lady, born in the Abyss with Void filling their shells.[39][55][56][57] After many Vessels were discarded for having a mind and will, one Vessel was considered pure and chosen to seal the Radiance.[15] This Vessel was taken out of the Abyss and named the Hollow Knight, trained and raised in the White Palace.[53][58][59] Three bugs were asked to become Dreamers, which would put them in an eternal sleep and seal the Temple of the Black Egg where the Hollow Knight and the Radiance would be contained.[60][61] Herrah the Beast, the queen of Deepnest,[62] only accepted if the Pale King would give her a child.[63][64] This child ended up being Hornet, born of Herrah and the Pale King.[65] Screenshot HK Dreamers 08 Memorial to the Dreamers in the Resting Grounds When the Hollow Knight was fully grown, they were sealed together with the Radiance within the Temple of the Black Egg.[66] The three Dreamers went to sleep to protect the Black Egg's entrance.[61] Two monuments were built in remembrance of their sacrifice, one dedicated to the Hollow Knight in the capital city, and one dedicated to the Dreamers in the Resting Grounds. The Fall of the Kingdom After some time, it became clear that the Hollow Knight was not a pure Vessel, tarnished by their bond with the Pale King who raised them.[58][67] Due to this, the Radiance was eventually able to exert influence again, causing the Infection to reappear.[68] Prologue The Hollow Knight in the opening cutscene As the kingdom fell to ruin, the Pale King abandoned the bugs of Hallownest and disappeared together with the White Palace.[13][69][70] Most of Hallownest's inhabitants became infected or died, with a few exceptions such as the Mantis tribe and some other bugs who resisted the Infection.[71] The Radiance eventually managed to break out of the Hollow Knight, cracking their shell and fully infecting them.[72] This event prompted the Knight to return to Hallownest, the kingdom now overrun by the reanimated corpses of its former citizens.[73][74][75] Elegy For Hallownest Elegy for Hallownest is a text written by Monomon the Teacher, the first four lines of which are displayed during the opening sequence of the game. - In wilds beyond they speak your name with reverence and regret, For none could tame our savage souls yet you the challenge met, Under palest watch, you taught, we changed, base instincts were redeemed, A world you gave to bug and beast as they had never dreamed. - From 'Elegy for Hallownest' by Monomon the Teacher - Hallownest residents are bug like, and are anthropomorphic bugs. โโโโโโโโโ Skilled protector of Hallownest's ruins. Wields a needle and thread. I have seen this nimble little creature. I thought her prey and pounced at her, but with a flash she stabbed me with her flying stinger and darted away. Could she be... a Hunter? Hornet is the mysterious princess-protector of Hallownestโs ruins, a major character in Hollow Knight and the protagonist of Hollow Knight: Silksong. She wields a needle and thread with deadly prowess.[3] As a boss, Hornet appears in two forms, Hornet Protector in Greenpath and Hornet Sentinel in Kingdom's Edge. She must be defeated twice to unlock her Journal entry, but this can be either by defeating both forms or by defeating her Protector form once in Greenpath and once in Godmaster Icon Godhome. Lore Hornet is the daughter of the Pale King and Herrah the Beast, the queen of Deepnest. Her birth was the result of a bargain for her mother to become a Dreamer, and as such, she spent only a short time with Herrah.[4][5] Her shared father with the Knight and the rest of the Vessels makes them siblings.[6][7] Hornet Quirrel comic Hornet fighting Quirrel Raised in Deepnest,[8] Hornet survived the Infection and the fall of the kingdom. She wanders its ruins, chasing off travelers who would seek to desecrate them, but also protecting the sealing of the Black Egg. She also guards the Cast-Off Shell in the Kingdom's Edge which can grant the King's Brand, the key to the Abyss.[9] In her duties, she encountered Quirrel in the Howling Cliffs at his arrival in Hallownest. She attempted to fight him but was repelled by the mask of Monomon he wears on his head. Hornet leaves him be after recognizing the mask, knowing that he was called upon, despite him not knowing it.[10] Like Quirrel and the Knight, she sensed the awakening of the Infection and started wandering Hallownest in search of answers. In Hollow Knight, she works to stop the impending doom looming on Hallownest. In Hollow Knight: Silksong, she ends up captured and brought to the haunted kingdom of Pharloom. In-game events Hornet appears at first as a wandering and recurring antagonist to the Knight. As their journey progresses, her involvement influences their quest in Hallownest. The Protector Screenshot HK Hornet 08 Hornet's first appearance Hornet is first encountered at the entrance to Greenpath, where she observes the Knight before moving away. She is quickly seen two more times dashing away from them throughout the overgrown Pilgrim's Way. The Knight finally catches up with her at the standing stones marking the entrance to the Lake of Unn, standing by the body of another Vessel. Relating the Knight's quest to the awakening of the Infection, she denies them to pursue any further. They clash, and when defeated, Hornet flees without a word. Hornet reappears briefly before the end of the Pilgrim's Way in the Fungal Wastes, going in the direction of the City of Tears. She, later on, catches up with the Knight at the Fountain Square in the middle of the drenched capital. Finally understanding the truth behind their origin and their quest, she encourages them to learn of Hallownest's sacrifice. She then asks them before leaving to find her at the Cast-Off Shell if, knowing the truth, the Knight would still want to take part in Hallownest's perpetuation. This encounter does not occur if the Knight has defeated a Dreamer or visited either of the rooms just outside the Markoth and Hornet Sentinel boss fights. The Sentinel Screenshot HK Hornet 01 Hornet in Kingdom's Edge At Kingdom's Edge, Hornet wishes to test the Knight's resolve in one more battle before entrusting them with Hallownest's future. Upon her defeat at the top of her strength, she allows the Knight to have the King's Brand burned onto their shell. She believes they would still continue their quest even after learning the truth of their conception at the bottom of the Abyss. Her trust compels her to save the Knight caught in the collapse of the Cast-Off Shell, trapped under piles of white ash. She leaves again without saying a word after saving them. Screenshot HK Hornet 05 Hornet by Herrah's bed If the Knight defeated Hornet at Kingdom's Edge before facing Herrah the Beast in Deepnest, Hornet appears next to them as they regain consciousness. Unlike her other appearances, she allows herself a respite to mourn the passing of her mother. She also expresses regrets that in order to repay her debt to her mother and perpetuate Hallownest, she had to let the Knight end her existence. If the Knight has not encountered Hornet in Deepnest, she also appears at the top of the Abyss after they successfully acquire the Shade Cloak and safely return. She now believes that since the Knight ascended the Abyss unscathed, they have a choice in their journey: to prolong Hallownest's stasis, or to face the heart of the Infection instead. The Sibling Screenshot HK Hornet 09 Hornet holding the Hollow Knight down After the Knight acquires the Void Heart and faces all three Dreamers, Hornet waits for them at the Temple of the Black Egg in the Forgotten Crossroads. She is impressed by their feat of both breaking the seals and accepting the Void within themself, casting them as an exceptional being. Once the Black Egg is opened, she tells the Knight she cannot follow them inside as the egg, built to sustain Vessels, would drain her were she to join. She, however, promises to aid as best as she can if the moment presents itself. She fulfils her promise once the Hollow Knight has been nearly defeated. She breaks open their shell with her needle, allowing the Knight a way to use the Dream Nail on their sibling and reach the heart of the Infection. - Fully grown Vessel, carrying the plague's heart within its body. The old King of Hallownest... he must have been desperate to save his crumbling little world. The sacrifices he imposed on others... all for nothing. The Hollow Knight is one of the main bosses in Hollow Knight. They are central to the Knight's journey and the story of Hallownest. The Godmaster Icon Pure Vessel is their stronger, uninfected form. Lore The Hollow Knight is the Vessel chosen by the Pale King to seal away the Radiance and save Hallownest from the Infection.[2] Like their siblings, they are the child of the King and Queen of Hallownest, birthed in the Abyss to be infused with the power of the Void.[3] As such, they are genderless.[1][4] This birth condition was also supposed to leave them without a mind, will, and voice,[5] to prevent the Radiance from influencing them.[6][7] However, their purity was misjudged, tarnished by an idea instilled,[8] a bond with the Pale King who raised them.[9] Pale King Abyss The young Hollow Knight being led out of the Abyss Regardless of their impurity, the Hollow Knight was trained and raised, eventually becoming a fully grown Vessel.[10] The Radiance was sealed within them, and they were chained within the Temple of the Black Egg where they were expected to contain the Infection for eternity.[11] However, because of the aforementioned impurities, the Radiance could still exert influence. It ultimately resulted in the resurgence of the Infection and the Kingdom falling into ruin. Over time, the Hollow Knight disappeared from the fallen Kingdom's memory. Only the Memorial in the middle of the City of Tears testifies of their sacrifice to save Hallownest. Screenshot HK Hollow Knight 02 The Hollow Knight chained in Black Egg After some time, the Radiance's power broke out of the Hollow Knight, cracking their shell and fully Infecting them.[12] This event was the catalyst that brought the Knight back to Hallownest.[13] The Knight can free and fight the Hollow Knight after killing the three Dreamers who sealed the Black Egg's entrance. In-game events Screenshot HK Hollow Knight 06 The Shade of the Hollow Knight during the Radiance fight The fate of the Hollow Knight is linked to the end of the Knight's journey. By killing the Hollow Knight, the Knight takes their place in sealing the Radiance. By instead entering their mind with the help of Hornet, the Knight can kill the Radiance. At the end of this fight, the Hollow Knight's Shade appears and opens up a weak point on her head, allowing the Knight to land the finishing blows. The two siblings then return to the Void together. Godmaster Icon Godmaster Content The Hollow Knight is also inherently part of the Godseeker's ritual. She seeks to attune the Radiance to Godhome through the Hollow Knight.[1] In doing so, she summons the Pure Vessel instead, their uninfected form. Once the Knight defeats the Pure Vessel in the Pantheon of the Knight, the Radiance reaches Godhome. Ending H The Hollow Knight in the Embrace the Void endings After the Knight defeats Absolute Radiance at the peak of the Pantheon of Hallownest, the Infection vanishes from Hallownest. The Hollow Knight can then be seen walking out of the Black Egg, freed from the Infection. They are met outside by a startled Hornet.
