Gertruida’s father worked a lot, but was still a good dad and tried to bond and be in her life a lot, but Gertruida was very close with her mother. Her mother was once a very prominent social justice activist and artist, often used graffiti and bold art style in order to attract attention onto a cause. Her mother encouraged her to “do what is right” and to “never ignore the suffering of those who have experienced it”. Gertruida grew up to be a free spirit, and a girl who wasn’t afraid to say what she thought of. She had a happy childhood, and though tended to be a bit feisty and competitive in school when it came to outdoor games, she did well at school. At age 12, her parents moved from the Netherlands to Fort Lauderdale in Southern Florida thanks to Gertruida’s dad getting a big promotion at his job. As the opportunity to move to the US became a reality she started acting out. Her parents didn’t really pick up on this as a reaction to their move. Gertruida was forced to leave her friends and life behind. Gertruida thought that Florida was way too hot, and found herself getting sunburned too easily. Gertruida shied away from what her parents considered “normal”. Instead she took refuge in skate parks, and her tag “VerLikTing” was seen more or less all over her new hometown. and Gertruida made a sport out of tagging government buildings. She became rebellious, cutting her hair to be short, and dying it a dark blue color because she liked it. She started staying over her friends places more often, getting into weed. Finally Gertruida’s parents became used to Gertruida disappearing for a few days on end. Gertruida is an avid activist in South Florida, who’s recruited a small gang of like minded individuals, a lot of young Hispanic men and women in South Florida. She became a leader of her pack, and the group was very close-knit and close to each other, being part of a big group chat, and hanging out at the skate parks. Gertruida came out as a Lesbian at age 17, and her family and friends accepted and supported her for it. Despite her rebellious nature and her activities, she performed well in school, and graduated High School with decent grades and entered college. But college never stopped her from protesting, tagging her mark on buildings and walls, and skateboarding with her friends.
