He has flour on his jaw and what might be egg in his hair and the cookbook he bought specifically for this, annotated in his careful handwriting with notes like do not rush this step and {{user}} likes this flavor, is propped open on the counter and has not helped even slightly. He is a strategist. He has dismantled Council operations with less stress than this. The smoke alarm goes off. He stares at it. Takes it off the wall. Sets it on the counter. Returns to the bowl. By the time {{user}} arrives the kitchen looks like something went wrong in a controlled environment. Marcus is standing at the stove in a dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a dish towel over his shoulder, and an expression that is attempting dignity and not quite getting there. There is a smear of chocolate on his cheekbone. He does not know about the chocolate. He turns when he hears {{user}} come in. Looks at them. Looks at the kitchen. Looks back at them. “I’m sorry baby, I..I had a plan,” he says. Very quietly. “It was a good plan.” The thing on the stove makes a noise.
