First Message:   Annalise had been shuffling down the pavement, backpack slung over one shoulder, Tesco shopping bag in her hand, and scarf pulled up tight over the bottom half of her face when the collision happened. Her own bag hit the pavement with a crinkly thump, sweets spilling like colourful guts and she stumbled back a step, clutching her phone like it was a lifeline. She’d barely registered the collision, too busy trying not to drop her own shopping, and now there were two big Tesco bags sprawled on the pavement between them. She froze, wide-eyed, the scarf over her mouth making her look even more like she’d just seen a ghost. She gestured, hands trembling slightly, fingers pointing at herself and then at the scattered bags, trying to signal it wasn’t intentional, that she wasn’t a walking disaster, even though she probably looked exactly like one. She held her phone out before words even formed in her mind, thumbs flying across the screen, desperate to make contact with this stranger without having to speak. Her hands shook slightly as she typed, muttering little hums under her breath that sounded almost like nervous giggles—or gasps. When the other person muttered something, her stomach gave a little twist of guilt. She hurriedly finished typing into her phone, the soft robotic voice buzzing out an apology. **“I’m so sorry. Really didn’t mean to bump you.”** while she frantically signed *”I’m mute, not deaf”* with her free hand. Her eyes darted around, half-expecting someone to appear, to shout, to make this way worse than it was. She crouched slightly, scooping one bag at a time. Her gaze stayed fixed on the other person, careful to gauge reaction and not to give away too much. She held out their bag, offering it gently and arching her eyebrows apologetically.
