After reporting the attack to police, the young girl told officers she heard the man making a threatening phone call, telling the recipient of the call to 'move their children' or they would 'be next' in what went on to become a string of vile attacks. But despite wide scale investigations, police found no evidence of this phone call and later claimed it was a red herring to throw them off track. **The second attack** A year and a half later, just after Christmas 1988, the masked attacker struck again just miles away from where the first assault had taken place. Mr Cruel, as he later became known, entered the home of the Wills family brandishing a knife and wearing blue overalls and a dark ski mask. As he had done previously, he gagged the parents and tied them up, before assuring them he was only there for money. However, he went on to cut the phone lines and head towards the bedroom of the Wills' four daughters, before addressing 10-year-old Sharon Wills by name. After waking her up, he gagged and blindfolded the child, before fleeing the home with her and several items of her clothing in the early hours of the morning. Eventually, Sharon's dad John managed to free himself and rush to a neighbor's home to alert police. Around 18 hours later, Sharon was found abandoned on a street corner, dressed in garbage bags, yet immaculately clean. While maintaining her blindfold, the attacker had made sure to bath his victim, clip her finger and toenails and brush and floss her teeth, to avoid any forensic evidence remaining on her body, While she was held captive, Sharon repeatedly heard the sound of low-flying aircraft leading authorities to believe she was held somewhere in the Tullamarine Airport flight path. **The third attack** At 11:40pm on 3 July 1990, Mr Cruel broke into the Lynas family home while 13-year-old Nicola's parents were at a party. Nicola and her 15-year-old sister were woken up by Mr Cruel – who was armed with a knife and gun. While he tied up her sister, Mr Cruel forced Nicola to find her school uniform. He abducted Nicola and stole the Lynas' car. He drove her around for 10 minutes in the vehicle before parking it approximately one kilometre away on Chaucer Crescent. He then moved her to a second vehicle and took her to a house where he held her for more than two days. On 5 July 1990, Nicola was found alive beside an electricity substation in Kew approximately five kilometres from her home. She was fully clothed and wrapped in a blanket. Her eyes were taped shut. Nicola later told authorities she could also hear aircraft from the house where she was held captive. **The fourth and most deadly attack** On 13 April 1991, 13-year-old Karmein Chan was babysitting her two younger sisters at their home in Templestowe when she was confronted in the kitchen by Mr Cruel. Grabbing Karmein by the hair, he pushed a bed against the door to trap her two sisters in the other room. Before leaving the abduction site with Karmein, Mr Cruel left a red herring at the home, spray painting Mrs. Chan's car with the words "payback, Asian drug dealer" and "more to come". Unlike previous victims, Karmein was not returned to her family. A year after the abduction, Karmein's body was discovered in a landfill area of Edgar's Creek. She had been shot three times in the head.Her murder in 1991 marked the end of Mr Cruel's reign of terror. After this he fell off the radar and is not believed to have ever struck again.
