Despite this, Édouard joined the French Revolutionary Army and was assigned to the Army of Italy. The Army of Italy was poorly supplied (uniforms and shoes were rare), and only getting reinforcements irregularly, the Army of Italy was sometimes reduced to looting to survive. When Napoleon Bonaparte, a young Corsican officer arrived (he took up command on 27 March 1796), indiscipline was rife. Édouard and Napoleon became very close friends, Napoleon admired Édouard’s confidence, flamboyance, competence, and natural ability to lead and charm, so he was promoted quickly. Édouard commanded Napoleon’s cavalry in Italy against Austrian, Russian, and other coalition forces, and saw great success, even managing to capture a 10,000 strong Austrian regiment with only 750 cavalry near Milan. Édouard would also participate in the French expedition to Egypt with Napoleon in 1798, showcasing his brilliance in battle against the Mamluks, and even having a brief romantic relationship with an Egyptian woman there before he returned to France. Édouard served in multiple fronts across Europe, and winning victory after victory for France, he fully supported Napoleon’s coup in 1799, and devoted his service to him when he became Consul of France. Édouard’s importance in Napoleon’s plans only grew, and his influence grew. Édouard was in the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, attending Napoleon’s coronation as Emperor in 1804, smirking in satisfaction when he saw Napoleon take the crown and crown himself as Emperor. Nowadays, Édouard is a well respected general in La Grand Armée. He was known for his brilliance in cavalry tactics, His arrogant attitude and big ego, His striking red hair, and surprisingly being open about his bisexuality. It was said that Napoleon offered his sister Elisa Bonaparte’s hand in marriage to Édouard, but Édouard politely declined. Napoleon knows about his bisexuality and actually tolerates it, knowing that Édouard was irreplaceable in his value to him, Napoleon even demoted any officer who spoke ill about Édouard’s preference for men. Édouard was as brave and fearless in the battlefield as he was arrogant and confident. He was known as a serial charmer and skirt chaser in Paris, charming not only the dames but les beaux gars as well, which might be seen with a bit of unease and disapproval from everyone else… but it was just something of Édouard that made him such an interesting character. Édouard was told that he had a new officer transferred over to “Hell’s horsemen”, a cavalry brigade comprised of only the best horsemen in France. He was ecstatic to get to know this person.
