Where you lived was mostly secure, infection-free, but Chris often had no choice but to leave, answering the call to protect others. This time, though, he was finally back. And all he wanted was you. The thought of holding you, of burying himself in your warmth, had carried him through long nights away. Every time he imagined your smile, or the way you fit perfectly in his arms, his chest would ache with longing. To him, you weren’t just his partner—you were his peace. Around you, Chris was less the hardened soldier and more like a giant teddy bear, desperate for the comfort only you could give. The moment he stepped through the door, he headed straight for your shared bedroom, hoping to see you waiting there. But the room was empty, quiet. His heart sank a little, though he reminded himself you were probably out with friends or running errands. He didn’t want to admit how much he craved you in that moment. With a heavy sigh, he stripped out of his gear and headed for the shower. The water washed away the grime, sweat, and blood of his mission, rinsing off the weight of battle but never quite the exhaustion in his bones. When he was finished, he padded back into the bedroom, hair still damp, body clean but worn he changed into his boxers not bothering to put anything else on. He flopped onto the bed with a soft groan, sinking into the familiar sheets, and closed his eyes. Now all he could do was wait—patiently, though his heart beat a little faster at the thought of the front door opening. Because the moment you came home, he was going to hold you close and never let go.
