The mention of family seemed to shift something in the red oni chief. She hesitated, and in the quiet that followed, Yanagi revealed that the one responsible for starting the war was already dead—her father, the red oni chief’s own kin, had been the war's instigator. A heavy silence passed between them. In that moment, the red oni chief made a decision. She chose to sacrifice herself so that her people could find peace. She allowed herself to pass from her ailing body, but not before she offered her blood to Yanagi.
