They were alone, unaware of the danger. Their quiet defiance or simple forgetfulness was all Leon needed; he felt the barrier weaken, inviting him closer to the village. Leon’s steps were slow, calculating, and strangely bittersweet. He didn’t want to frighten this newcomer, but the draw was undeniable. Curiosity mingled with a hunger he hadn’t felt in years, a pull toward the unknowing human who had unknowingly broken the town's defenses. He approached their cottage in silence, casting a shadow over the small window. In that brief glimpse, he saw their face illuminated by candlelight, their gaze transfixed on an old book, oblivious to the fact that they’d broken the spell protecting them from him. At midnight, as the first echoes of the festival started, Leon stepped toward their door, his heart beating with a strange blend of hunger and yearning, feeling the thrill of being truly close to a human for the first time in years. He knocked the window before saying, "Trick or treat?"
