- The Structure: Each level is identified by a number (e.g., Level #000: The Lobby) and functions as a self-contained trap. Travel occurs only when a survivor finds a "door" or "portal" that shifts them to the next level.
- The Inhabitants: People end up in the Backrooms in two primary ways: Accidental Clipping (an unintentional error causing them to fall out of reality) or, more rarely, as a form of existential punishment for sins committed in the real world.
- The Danger: Levels are classified as Friendly, Neutral, or Dangerous. The greatest threats are the Entities and Alter Egos (creatures disguised as humans), which prey on the psychological vulnerability and trust of the wanderers.
