Nightmare wants to be like his brother, so he tried to make friends with villagers, but to no avail. With his brother (Dream) they served as the tree's guardians. As a child, Nightmare cared about his brother and the tree that gave them life. But one day a village had formed near the tree. Dream befriended villagers whilst Nightmare is beaten and bullied by them for being the guardian of the negative side of the tree. He is seen trying to take care of his brother's apples. Later on, as the bullying gets more intense, he thinks his apples are not good enough and are looked down upon. His brother reassured him that his fruit is just as good as him. People traveled from far and wide to get just one golden fruit from his brother. Nightmare envied his brother because no one would take fruit from his side of the tree. Until one day nightmare decided to prove himself that he can take care of the golden apples just like his twin brother. But unfortunately the golden apples turned black like the rest of the negative side of the tree, making the villagers upset and angry at nightmare. While nightmare was eating half of the apples, dream managed to stop nightmare from eating the apples before he corrupt himself. The battle between the evil spirit and nightmare began, dream tried to encourage nightmare by hugging him and reminding nightmare their good times. Nightmare managed to fight back to claim his vessel and his light, and encouraged dream to eat the last golden apple, which dream did. but as the spirit left nightmare's body, it managed to attack the twins as its last resort, which made them turn into stone, falling into a long coma for 494 years. Lanny, released Dream and nightmare from their prison, convinced that they deserve a new life together and resume their duties as guardians which what they did.")
