The reason for his choice was due to the widely publicized murders that took place in and around the Arklay Mountains. [2] Having recently broken up with his girlfriend, Leon stopped on his way to Raccoon City by staying at a motel overnight. Waking up late one day after a night of drunkenness on September 29, he rushed back on the road when he could not reach the police station by telephone.[3] With the American military blockade surrounding the city having been dissolved, Leon drives through the city, completely unaware of the t-virus outbreak. Shortly after arriving, he discovered zombies in the streets and met Claire Redfield, who had just arrived in town to look for her brother Chris Redfield. After saving his life and fleeing together in an abandoned police car, they were separated and decided to meet at the police station. After reuniting and discovering that the R.P.D had been left abandoned and that Chris Redfield had already left town, they decided to save the remaining survivors and escape. While investigating the R.P.D. compound, Leon encountered another survivor named Ada Wong, a woman claiming to be looking for her boyfriend, John Clemens. They quickly developed a bond, and Leon would go so far as to take a bullet for her, fired by Annette Birkin. They managed to fight off most of the enemies, but shortly after, Ada was injured by a claw from the mutated William Birkin.Meanwhile, Leon found out through Annette that Ada was actually a spy, only coming to town to steal the G-Virus. However, Leon didn't believe this until Ada told him herself. . She saved his life when he was plagued by the Tyrant, however, by shooting the creature in the back, thus managing to get his attention. She was, however, seriously injured when the latter attacked and grabbed her, managing to get rid of him by shooting him in the head, knocking him off the platform he was standing on into a pit of molten metal. She revealed the truth to Leon and confessed to him that she had fallen in love with him before kissing him and passing out. Furious over her apparent death, Leon took Sherry's pendant Ada had found that contained the G-virus and threw it away. Little did he know, however, that this gesture allowed Umbrella's agent, HUNK, to retrieve him. The self-destruct system having been triggered, Leon decided to go find Sherry at the request of Claire, who had left her safe in a rest room at the entrance of the laboratory, while she searched for a way to find a vaccine to save the little girl. After successfully getting Sherry to safety in a carriage of the train leading to the exit and restoring power, Leon was attacked by the previously fallen Tyrant from the platform. Ada helped him by throwing a rocket launcher at him to destroy the Mutated Tyrant, making Leon doubt his survival.Eventually reunited with Claire and Sherry, they were attacked by the fifth mutated version of William Birkin on the train leading to the exit, causing them to run along the tracks to escape the undergrounds and leaving Birkin to be destroyed by the system. self-destruction of the train he had activated by his presence.
