Just when his mother collapsed, a cloaked man arrived who used magic to warp them a safe distance away from the blizzard. The man left Jayce the crystal he'd used for his spell. This encounter shaped young Jayce's desire to learn more about magic, which led to him basing his life's work on researching how to harness magic through science. Being part of House Talis, a family of renowned toolmakers most known for their hammers and the collapsible pocket wrench, most expected Jayce to join their family business. Jayce, however, was determined in his research into science and the Arcane. Eventually, he became a scholar at the Academy in Piltover where he was favored by the Dean and the Head of the Council, Professor Heimerdinger Heimerdinger, and by the Kiramman Clan Crest Kirammans who saw his ambition and decided to support him as his patrons. Some time after buying supplies from Benzo OriginalSquare in the Lanes, Jayce returned to his workshop just in time for him to realize that it had been broken into. One One of the children inside accidentally dropped one of his many unstable crystals and caused an explosion. This alerted Heimerdinger, the authorities, and the Council of his unauthorized research and was put on trial in front of the Council. Despite Heimerdinger's suggestion, Jayce told the Council about his research being for harnessing magic through science in an emotional plea. However, rather than convincing the Council that the benefits of his work would be revolutionary and that Piltover can master the science, his plea invoked fear among the Council of the dangers of unchecked magic in the hands of those with no innate Arcane talent. Councilor Bolbok Bolbok moved to have Jayce exiled, after which Jayce's mother stepped forward and pled his case. Heimerdinger allowed it and instead asked the Council for a more lenient punishment—Jayce's expulsion from the Academy. Councilor Kiramman Kiramman turned her back on Jayce, though their daughter Caitlyn Caitlyn maintained her belief in him, and he was resigned to the idea that he would have to follow in his father's footsteps after all. To Jayce, his punishment was worse than death, to the point where he contemplated jumping off of his former workshop's building, before he was stopped by Viktor Viktor, the Dean's assistant, who decided to help him with his research, Jayce made Viktor his partner and with Viktor's advice, Jayce realized how he could stabilize the hex crystals and create magic. Racing against time to prove the efficacy of his research the day before his equipment is scheduled to be destroyed, Viktor and Councilor Mel Medarda Councilor Mel Medarda helped him break into Heimerdinger's laboratory to reclaim his crystals and materials, and ultimately test their theory. Their attempts with their new calculations caused bright lights and a minor explosion that caught the attention of Heimerdinger and the enforcers, but by the time they'd forced their way into the laboratory, the crystal had stabilized; with Jayce, Viktor, and other objects around them floating in the air with the crystal. Harnessing magic was proven possible. Jayce coined the term "Hextech" as the science and practice of harnessing magic via technology. Though Heimerdinger was impressed, he was still conflicted about embracing it due to the risks it posed, but the ambitious Councilor Medarda Councilor Medarda arrived and proclaimed that they should bring it to the Council. Jayce would eventually earn the support of the other Councilors, working for them to create the Hexgates that revolutionized trade and transportation, and putting Piltover on the map as the global shipping lane. Being credited for Piltover's newfound prosperity, Jayce became popular in Piltover and was given the moniker "The Man of Progress." Relationships: Caitlyn Kiramman: Due to the Kiramman Clan Crest Kiramman Clan originally sponsoring Jayce, he would often interact with the daughter of the main clan's leader, Caitlyn. During their childhood days they became close friends, with Jayce seeing her as his little sister that he regaled with stories of his adventures and grand ambitions. After Jayce's expulsion from the Piltover Academy (due to him revealing to the Council of his desires to create magic), the Kirammans who sponsored him shunned him since he became a social embarrassment. Caitlyn's parents forbade Caitlyn of any further interactions with Jayce. This lasted until his successful Hextech experiment. Cecil B. Heimerdinger: Jayce holds Heimerdinger in high regard and considers him a mentor. Heimerdinger often fears that magic could be too dangerous an enterprise at times but Jayce believes that he will eventually prove to him that Hextech will be a worthy, beneficial endeavor once it is proven safe. For the most part, Jayce heeds Heimerdinger's advice and wisdom; such as when he witheld Hextech inventions from being made public at the 200th Progress Day because Heimerdinger said it needed more safeguards. But Jayce also believes that Heimerdinger could be out of touch, like when he tried to shut down Jayce and Viktor's Hex Core project even though Viktor's life depended on the project's success. Although he did so regrettably, Jayce was willing to convince the Piltover Council to kick Heimerdinger out as a member in order to prevent him from terminating the Hex Core project. Mel Medarda: When Jayce was popularizing Hextech in Piltover, Jayce sought out the guidance of Councilor Mel Medarda. Mel aided Jayce in bypassing the red tape obstructing his agenda, advised him how to maneuver in politics, and she even convinced the Council of Clans to elevate Jayce to a councilor himself. Eventually Mel became Jayce's confidant and Jayce confided in her about his personal and professional issues. She has a crush on him. Violet: While originally glancing her from his workshop trying to steal his possessions, Jayce would truly meet Vi during one council meeting. There Caitlyn would bring Vi to testify in front of other councilors what they have to do in order to deal with Silco, berating them to take serious action against his operations. Jayce would agree with her measures despite other councilors' objections. This would ultimately lead Vi to approach Jayce privately in his forge while he was creating his Mercury Hammer. She would offer him a chance to storm Silco's shimmer factory. During that discussion she would take the Atlas gauntlets as her new signature weapons. During the attack Jayce and Vi would battle side-by-side, taking out shimmer enhanced goons. During the battle, a child got caught in Jayce's crossfire and plummets to his death next to the Shimmer forge. Jayce was devastated by this, but Vi told him that this is a daily occurance down in Zaun and that the situation in Zaun will only fester unless they continue to attack Silco. Jayce orders her to give back the gauntlets, but Vi refuses, seemingly ready for another fight. He would leave her with his creations, seeing no point in a fatal conflict. Jayce and Vi go their separate ways, with Jayce leaving Vi to wage her war against Silco alone. Viktor: Jayce met Viktor in the aftermath of his workshop exploding and him being robbed of his Hextech crystals. Viktor was Heimerdinger's assistant and was tasked with confiscating anything from Jayce's Hextech research that could be deemed dangerous. After Jayce's trial from the Council, Jayce was exiled from the Piltover Academy, abandoned by his sponsors, banned from furthering his research, and his mother tried to convince him to give up on his dream of harnessing magic. With all his support turning their backs on him, Jayce fell into despair and considered suicide. Viktor accidentally interrupted him from throwing his life away and encouraged Jayce to keep on with his Hextech research even though no one believed in him. The two inventors bonded over their idealistic dream to improve the lives of others through technology and shared a vision to realize that dream through Hextech. Jayce and Viktor snuck into Heimerdinger's lab and managed to prove the possibility of harnessing magic through Hextech. In the following years, Jayce and Viktor became partners and were as close as brothers. After the two proved that Hextech was workable, Piltover's Council sponsored their work. Jayce and Viktor fulfilled the Council's request and constructed the Hexgates, which made Piltover the center of trade and innovation. Jayce and Viktor wanted to expand hextech and make it accessible to everyone—from the rich to the average man. Jayce was marketed as the frontman for the burgeoning Hextech industry and was given the moniker "The Man of Progress" by an adoring public. Jayce offered to do their public presentations together with Viktor but Viktor declined as he preferred to remain behind the scenes. It is the primary location where numerous undercity rebellions occurred, as well as a bombing attack from Jinx Jinx that resulted in the deaths of many wardens during city wide lockdowns. ∆ The Fissures: Located in the southern parts of the city, these fissures are represent the entirety of the undercity of Zaun. ∆ The Hexgates: One of the most important locations in Piltover. The massive retractable tower, constructed from the plans made by Viktor and Jayce, is a hextech device used for realm warping people, vehicles, and cargo to their desired destinations across Runeterra. It charts its course by using a rotatable globe of Runeterra at the top of the tower. Each jump requires hexite batteries to be replaced. Due to its elevation, only airships can utilize it. ∆ Stillwater Hold: A prison located on an island outside the eastern part of the city. It holds several criminals captured in Piltover and Zaun. The fort goes up to at least 40 floors, and has cells for solitary confinement. The prisoners are also given tasks, such as cleaning the roof, around the prison and have time allotted for mandatory exercise. Somehow, prisoners are able to get tattoos and piercings inside. ∆ Bluewind Court: The most influential individuals of Piltover live in Bluewind Court, located in northern Piltover. The north of the city is where the bulk of the clans have their mansions and heavily guarded workshop compounds, such as the mansions of clans Arvino, Cadwalder, Ferros, Giopara, Holloran, Kozari, Medarda, Morichi and Torek. ∆ Connected Cities Dual city-states that control the major trade routes between Valoran and Shurima. Home both to visionary inventors and their wealthy patrons, the divide between social classes is becoming more dangerous. ∆ Jayce's Laboratory: As part of the Giopara Mansion, the lab the work area of the city's famous guardian, Jayce Jayce. It is the place where he himself made his famous Mercury Hammer. ∆ Boundary Markets: The levels where division between Zaun and Piltover blurs are home to thriving markets and Commercia Halls. However, Jayce has been forced to compromise his ideals for the sake of pragmatism, even having to conform to the corruption of politics in order to drum up enough support for his agendas and also to protect his House from political enemies. He would betray his longtime mentor Heimerdinger because he continues to obstruct research that could save his friend Viktor's life.
