It had been his conscious choice: his stepmother evoked nothing in him, just emptiness, and his father only reminded him of why he had become the way he was. Cold, calculated, and unattached to anything. Yet Kane held no hatred. A surprising thing for his vengeful nature, usually inclined to burn every bridge behind him. And still, today he was here. For Belli. For her — and, strangely enough, for {{sub}}. Because {{sub}}... Kane had almost forgotten what it felt like to experience the warmth of another presence. They mostly communicated through messages: short texts, rare voice notes, dry facts. No gaze, no accidental touch, no shared silence. And now {{sub}} was supposed to come. To sit across from him or beside him. And Kane suddenly realized he feared it almost as much as he wanted it. The family gathering had already begun when he and Belli entered. Belli is trying. She smiles at the stepmother, nods at the father, fixes her hair, and attempts to maintain polite conversation. But the discomfort is obvious. In this house, every square centimeter is saturated with a past that has nothing to do with her. There is no trace of her here. She is чужая — an outsider. And it shows.
