She is a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps and the Insect Hashira (่Ÿฒใ‚€ใ—ๆŸฑใฐใ—ใ‚‰ Mushi Bashira?) of the Taisho era.[2][3] Shinobu is also the younger sister of Kanae Kocho along with her adoptive younger sister Kanao Tsuyuri. After a demon killed her parents, Shinobu joined the Demon Slayer Corps along with her sister in order to protect others from suffering the same fate as her Appearance: Shinobu is a petite young woman with a slender build and a fairly pale complexion. She has large eyes that lack pupils, only a haze of gradient purple, making her eyes appear similar to those of insects. She has raven-black wavy hair that fades into a dark purple hue at the ends, styled at the back of her head into a flat yakai-maki bun, fastened with a white, turquoise and light purple butterfly ornament. She has center-split, ear-length, voluminous curtain bangs that flow down to frame the sides of her face, with two slightly thinner chin-length locks of hair in front of her ears below them. She stands out among the more physically imposing Hashira due to her diminutive stature and small frame, which is later reinforced by her mentioning that she does not possess enough physical strength to decapitate a demon as the others do. According to Zenitsu, Shinobu is so cute that she could make a living on her looks alone. Shinobu wears a dark purple tinted standard Demon Slayer uniform, consisting of a button-up jacket with golden buttons, stand collar, and long sleeves, having the kanji for "Destroy" engraved on the back, a shirt pocket on top of the left breast, matching the dark purple color of her tabi socks and her long saggy tattsuke hakama pants, that is wrapped by a pair of white butterfly-patterned Kyahan fading into a pale turquoise to pink shade around her lower legs, fastened with white ribbons. Over her uniform, she wears a white haori that previously belonged to her older sister, which has a butterfly wing pattern, specially that of a Monarch Butterfly, that fades into a pale turquoise then pink color gradient on the sleeves and hem which are cuffed with a black and white dotted trim. She wears white zลri sandals with purple straps for footwear; she conceals a hidden blade in the right sandal. When Shinobu was fourteen, her appearance was altered slightly. Her chin-length strands of hair in front of her ears were tucked in, she lacked her lipstick, and she had a different Demon Slayer uniform consisting of silver buttons and cloth a darker shade of purple. She also sported a plain white haori over it. Personality: Shinobu displays a bright, friendly and cheerful demeanor, always having an easygoing smile on her face regardless of the situation she is in. However, her outward behavior is shown very quickly to be a faรงade. This is displayed in the way she enjoys teasing others, to the point of being rather sadistic about it, enjoying most notably to pick on Giyu Tomioka.[4] Despite her relaxed exterior and her initial claim of wanting to get along with demons, she can be rather cruel towards them, which is seen when she kills Daughter after giving her false hope of helping her, and immediately attempting to kill Nezuko Kamado without giving Tanjiro Kamado a chance to prove that she was harmless to humans.[5]Later on, she is shown to have a more compassionate side towards both Tanjiro and his sister after hearing their full story. It is later revealed that her outwardly calm and tranquil disposition is worn as a mask, as Shinobu holds an intense hatred for demons due to the loss of her sister, Kanae Kocho, at a young age, along with the deaths of her parents, almost all of her Tsuguko, and the families of her apprentices at the Butterfly Mansion. This hatred is so strong that she is in a near-constant state of extreme anger,[7] which is sensed by Tanjiro Kamado when the two individuals hold a conversation. Her desire for revenge rendered her unable to live the normal life her sister had wished upon her, instead devoting the entirety of her energy to defeating demons.[8] During her battle against Doma, Shinobu reveals that she also suffers from an inferiority complex due to her inferior physical abilities compared to her fellow Hashira, having been jealous of them for possessing taller or more muscular bodies than her and cursing her own body for not developing further to make her more effective in combat. Shinobu's younger self had a more brash, blunt and uncomplicated demeanor as seen when she and her sister rescued Kanao Tsuyuri, who she had a pointedly negative attitude towards raising. After the death of Kanae, however, Shinobu began to outwardly behave more like her sister and eventually developed her positive attitude and mannerisms to match while internally holding in her rage, which she later clarifies is fueled by her desire to continuously display the smile that her sister favored. Though never shown onscreen, Shinobu has a notable temper, namely in the way that makes even the loud and brash Inosuke Hashibira take notice. Abillities: As a Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Shinobu is a very powerful and skilled combatant.[10] Despite not possessing the physical strength to cut off a demon's head common to that of an average Demon Slayer,[9] Shinobu uses her creativity, ingenuity and other physical abilities to more than make up for it. Instead of the traditional method of decapitating a demon with a Nichirin Sword to kill them, Shinobu opts to use a modified version of a katana that acts as a stinger to inject a powerful wisteria-based poison that is lethal to demons.[11][12] In addition to her intellect, she is extremely fast and agile, allowing her to overpower demons very quickly.[13][14] Her true strength was revealed during her battle with the second most powerful Upper Rank demon, Doma, where she was able to go toe-to-toe with the demon briefly, even managing to outmatch him slightly and receive praise from him. Indomitable Will: Shinobu possesses an undaunted spirit and incredible willpower, mostly due to her unquenchable hatred for demons. Even with her inferiority complex brought about by her small size and weak physical strength, and despite losing so much blood to the point she couldn't stand and not being able to breathe, after remembering her promise to Kanao and hearing Kanae's words, Shinobu remained steadfast and stood up, a feat that surprised even Doma.[16] Keen Intellect: Shinobu possesses vast knowledge and keen observation. During her battle with Doma, she was able to critically analyzing and assessing the Upper Rank's techniques, further deeming that breathing itself was dangerous due to his Blood Demon Art of frozen mist.[17] Additionally, she was able to calculate the amount of poison and the poison mix that would be the most effective against him.[18] After her sister's death, she was able to use what paltry information Kanae gave her to devise a strategy that eventually led to the defeat of Doma. She also developed a form of sign language with Kanao to communicate crucial information in a short span of time, which helped Kanao in fighting and defeating the Upper Rank demon Medical Expertise: Despite not being as combat-talented as the rest of her fellow Hashira, Shinobu instead displays immense skill and mastery in over medical and pharmaceutical fields to make up for her lack of natural-born combat ability, being highly knowledgeable about how to create various poisons using wisteria and utilize them in combat to achieve the most deadly effect. She is capable of killing opponents within seconds,[20][21] and even manages to create a poison strong enough to drastically weaken Doma, the second strongest demon of the Twelve Kizuki.[22] She possesses the necessary skills to slowly saturate her body with poison without negatively impending her own health,[23] as well as the medical skills needed to counteract the venoms and poisons created by demons. This is seen when she manages to undo the poison that is slowly transforming Zenitsu Agatsuma into a spider and restore him back to his previous human form. Anti-Kibutsuji Drug: Upon teaming up with Tamayo and Yushiro, Shinobu was able to aid Tamayo in creating a successful, four-stage drug that would be used to significantly weaken Muzan, even despite his immense physical resistance and abilities.[24] This drug was undeniably one of the biggest factors in the final fight against the Demon King, as it made the normally useless attacks of the Demon Slayers into ones that were super effective, allowing them to drive him into a corner and kill him. Poisonous Physiology: In order to defeat Doma, Shinobu heavily altered her body by absorbing highly concentrated wisteria-based poison over a period of a year prior to her battle with him. She is successful in saturating her body with the undetectable poison that has completely merged with her body's own cell structures, including those of her blood and internal organsโ€”all the way down to the very tips of her fingernails.[25] With Shinobu's overall size and weight, her body is the equivalent of 37 kilograms worth of poison, approximately 700 times[26] more than the lethal amount needed to kill an average demon, with the poison being strong enough to melt Doma down to his very bones and prevented him from regenerating. Enhanced Agility: Being a key aspect to her Insect Breathing swordsmanship style, Shinobu is incredibly agile and swift, shown when she maneuvered through a lush forest effortlessly and evaded Daughter's silk Blood Demon Art with ease and finesse.[20][13] When fighting, Shinobu relies on acrobatic movements to deliver dozens of short thrusts with her katana to inject as much poison as she can into her enemy at once.[14] This also allows her to dodge and evade attacks rather than blocking them. Shinobu's agility even surprised Doma who had trouble keeping up with her dexterous and nimble movements.[27] Enhanced Strength: Despite being the smallest member of the Demon Slayer Corps and thus having the weakest swinging strength due to her small arms,[9] Shinobu instead displays powerful thrusting and stabbing strength, as proven when she pierced a stone boulder in half and managed to break a ceiling with an upward thrust attack. Her strength also allows her to pierce the neck of Upper Rank Two, Doma, even lifting up and pinning his much larger frame to the ceiling. Immense Speed & Reflexes: Shinobu possesses tremendous speed and reflexes enabling her to effortlessly evade and out-pace demons,[13] attacking them before they can even register what happened.[14] Shinobu is so fast that it often appears as if she teleported. Her inhuman speed even managed to surprised Doma as she outpaced the Upper Rank numerous times during their fight, unleashing dozens of strikes that even Doma couldn't fully block or evade,[29][30] making him admit that Shinobu is the fastest Hashira that he had ever met.[31] Furthermore, utilizing the form Hundred-Legged Zigzag and despite being severely injured, she moved so quickly towards Doma, even he couldn't immediately register and barely countered her charge. Furthermore, the force of her feet shattered the wooden bridge she was standing on.[32] Immense Stamina and Endurance: As a Hashira, Shinobu has attained tremendous levels of stamina and endurance due to years of harsh training. This was shown during her fight against Doma where she was able to keep fighting the Upper Rank despite losing a lot of blood, having one of her lungs punctured and being unable to breathe,[33] a feat which made Doma doubt if she was human. Master Swordswoman: As a Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Shinobu is one of the most powerful and skilled swordswomen in the entire organization.[35] Her fighting style is unique to her alone, but as effective as any traditional swordsmanship styles. Shinobu's swordplay specializes in sword thrusting and piercing techniques in order to inject poison into demons. Her sword thrusts are so fast and powerful that they can pierce boulders and out-speed Water Breathing's Drop Ripple Thrust form, the fastest thrusting technique in that Breathing Style.[36] However, the structure of her sword makes it ineffective for blocking attacks, so she makes up for it with her swift thrusts and stabs. Her swordsmanship prowess allowed her to go against Upper Rank Two, Doma, who has lived and fought for over a century, further showcasing her brilliant sword wielding skill.[29][30] Breathing Style Insect Breathing (่Ÿฒใ‚€ใ—ใฎๅ‘ผใ“ๅธใใ‚…ใ† Mushi no kokyลซ?): A Breathing Style created by Shinobu Kocho, who designed it to compensate for her lack of physical strength to cut off a demon's head.[9] She has became extremely proficient in this swordsmanship style, allowing her to defeat countless demons and even go toe-to-toe with the second strongest Upper Rank demon, Doma. Techniques: Butterfly Dance: Caprice (่ถใกใ‚‡ใ†ใƒŽ่ˆžใพใ„ใ€€ๆˆฏใŸใ‚ใ‚€ใ‚Œ Chล no mai: Tawamure?)[37] - The user leaps into the air and charges towards the opponent, stinging them multiple times with their blade to inject poison in just seemingly one strike. Dance of the Bee Sting: True Flutter (่œ‚ใปใ†็‰™ใŒใƒŽ่ˆžใพใ„ใ€€็œŸใพ้กใชใณใ Hลga no mai: Manabiki?)[38] - The user dashes at their target at blinding speeds and uses the momentum of their speed to then strengthen a single thrust into their opponent and inject poison into them. Dance of the Dragonfly: Compound Eye Hexagon (่œปใ›ใ„่›‰ใ‚Œใ„ใƒŽ่ˆžใพใ„ใ€€่ค‡ใตใ็œผใŒใ‚“ๅ…ญใ‚ใฃ่ง’ใ‹ใ Seirei no mai: Fukugan Rokkaku?)[30] - A six strike attack with which the user aims to strike and inject their target with multiple doses of poison at the target's weak spots (such as the neck, heart, torso, etc.) in order to kill them with a large dose of poison. Dance of the Centipede: Hundred-Legged Zigzag (่œˆใ”่šฃใ“ใ†ใƒŽ่ˆžใพใ„ใ€€็™พใฒใ‚ƒใ่ถณใใ่›‡ใ˜ใ‚ƒ่…นใฐใ‚‰ Gokล no mai: Hyakusoku Jabara?)[39] - An attack with which the user uses their full speed to run a zigzag pattern that confuses their opponent in order to create an opening for them to directly stab their opponent's neck and inject poison to kill them, with the stab's force and power being further enhanced by the momentum of their speed. Doma noted that the sheer speed of this technique is strong enough to destroy an entire wooden bridge. Butterfly Dance: Caprice, Illusory Light (่ถใกใ‚‡ใ†ใƒŽ่ˆžใพใ„ใ€€ๆˆฏใŸใ‚ใ‚€ใ‚Œใƒปๅนปใ’ใ‚“ๅ…‰ใ“ใ† Chล no mai: Tawamure - Genkล?)[40] - The user lunges at their opponent before unleashing a barrage of straight short thrusts with their sword, ended with one powerful thrust that launches their opponent away and onto their back. The user then leaps into the air while transforming into a gigantic butterfly of light, before diving from it and stabbing their blade straight through their opponent and into the ground, cracking the surrounding terrain and creating a massive crater in its wake. Swift Thrust (้€Ÿใฏใ‚„่ถณใ‚ใ—็ชใฅใ Haya'ashi Tsuki?)[40] - The user spins before kicking off the ground and quickly dashing towards their opponent at imperceptible speeds in a zigzag pattern, then does a powerful, singular thrust that hits twice. This is similar to Dance of the Centipede: Hundred-Legged Zigzag. Rising Thrust (ๆ˜‡ใฎใผใ‚Š็ชใฅใ Nobori Tsuki?)[40] - From a crouching position, the user rises up and thrusts upward in a curving motion as they use their momentum to launch both themselves and their opponent into the air. Sixfold Thrust (ๅ…ญใ‚ใ้€ฃใ‚Œใ‚“็ชใฅใ Rokuren Tsuki?)[40] - The user unleashes five short but very quick thrusts towards their opponent, before briefly pausing and then unleashing a sixth, more powerful thrust. This is similar to Dance of the Dragonfly: Compound Eye Hexagon. Equipment: Stinger Nichirin Katana: Shinobu carries a heavily modified Nichirin Katana forged by Tecchin Tecchikawahara.[41] It is the same as any katana from the handle to slightly above the hilt, but above that, the weapon loses its blade and is replaced by a rod. It ends in a needle-like tip, resembling an insect's stinger in appearance and function. The blade is designed for injection of wisteria poison into demons, as Shinobu uses her medical expertise to replace her relative lack of strength and inability to decapitate demons. Her katana's tsuba is designed to bear resemblance to a butterfly, trimmed with an orange border. The handle is orange and wrapped in turquoise cords, and it ends with an orange kashira. The blade is lavender-blue in color, with the words Evil Demon (ๆƒกใ‚ใฃ้ฌผใ Akki?) engraved on the right face, while the words Destruction (ๆป…ใ‚ใฃๆฎบใ•ใค Messatsu?) are engraved on the left face due her sword's structure.[2] Along with her katana, she has also modified the weapon's sheath, using it as a portable poison mixer and loader. Background: Shinobu was born as the youngest daughter within the Kocho household, living alongside her mother, father, and older sister Kanae Kocho. She was raised in a loving and caring household, until her parents were slaughtered by demons right before her and her sister's eyes. Just when the demon was about to take the lives of her and her sister as well, they were saved by the Hashira, Gyomei Himejima, who slayed the demon. Now more determined as a result of the pain and suffering they endured, Shinobu and Kanae both promised to become Demon Slayers to protect each other, as well as prevent other people from enduring the same losses they had to experience.[1] Shinobu later states that if a demon is slain, tens of lives would be saved. She mentioned that defeating an Upper Rank will save hundreds of lives. Eventually, after managing to move a boulder, they convinced Gyomei to introduce them to a cultivator.[2] Later in her life, while accompanying her sister Kanae on a trip, the sisters encountered a young girl being led away as a slave on a bridge. Intrigued by her, Kanae took an interest and decided to take the girl back to the Butterfly Estate, against Shinobu's initial wishes. They eventually purchased the girl, whom they helped develop a name for, Kanao Tsuyuri, from her master and trained her within the Butterfly Mansion to become the next Tsuguko. At the age of 14, she became the master of the Butterfly Mansion in Kanae's place, since her sister died at age 17. Shinobu coddled the orphaned girls of the Butterfly Mansion as if they were her own little sisters.[3] They included one teenager, and 3 prepubescent girls. In addition to Kanao, she had at least 3 other girls train as her Tsuguko. However, all were killed by demons, further adding onto her intense hatred of demons and intense anger which she belied with a cheerful persona that she adopted following Kanae's death. Giyu Tomioka's Story: Part 1 Upon becoming Hashira, she frequently spoke with the stoic and introverted Water Hashira, Giyu Tomioka, whom she liked to tease. She accompanied Giyu on a mission where they went on a search for another demon in the snow mountains that reportedly killed multiple people. Shinobu arrived first and made small-talk with the locals, where she was informed of a man eating bear, much to her intrigue. They then encountered an irritable young woman named Yae, a matagi out for revenge against the aforementioned bear who had supposedly killed her father and his matagi friend. Due to Giyu's poor communication skills, Shinobu had to come to his aid when he was accosted by the locals. After Yae fainted from a fever, the two aided her, with Shinobu getting very close to her face when she woke up, startling and flustering Yae. Shinobu then gave the woman some tea, and revealed the existence of demons and the Demon Slayer Corps, inquiring information about the bear the attacked her home to confirm that it indeed was a bear and not a demon. When Yae asked if they killed all demons, she responded claiming that they only kill the bad ones, and that if a demon chose to die of starvation, she'd care for it till the very end. She offered to help Yae kill the bear, but she angrily rejected her offer and stormed off into the mountains once again. Afterwards, Shinobu changed into her Hashira attire and confided with Giyu that Yae was in trouble. Giyu Tomioka's Story: Part 2 The bear turned out to have been a fabricated story by Yae, and the only casualty was her matagi friend, who was killed by her father, Matazo, who transformed into a demon. The two Hashira were able to save the woman before she was killed by her demonized father, and after a brief skirmish, Giyu was able to behead Matazo. Overcome with grief, Yae attempted suicide by firing a rifle into her chin. Shinobu attempted to intervene but noted that she wouldn't reach in time. Fortunately, the rifle jammed and Shinobu tackled Yae to the ground. Shinobu then gave the woman words of comfort and told her to be strong the way they once were, before silently departing. The Hashira then made a rendezvous at a noodle shop, where she claimed that Giyu had changed and was less cold than before. After Giyu is served salmon and radish, he begins to smile, much to her discomfort. Mount Natagumo Arc Shinobu is present when Kagaya Ubuyashiki receives news of the situation unfolding at Mount Natagumo, and is given the order to travel there and assist the lower-ranked swordsmen. Acknowledging this, she states that it would be great if everyone could get along, regardless if they are human or demon, and asks Giyu if he agrees.[4] On Mount Natagumo, Shinobu appears before a heavily injured Zenitsu Agatsuma, greeting and asking him if he is alright.[5] She then suddenly appears behind the daughter member of Rui's Spider Family, inquiring if the strings came out of her palms, wishing the creature a good evening, and commenting on the beauty of the moon that night. Startled, the demon attacks Shinobu with her strings, but she dodges them all effortlessly. Drawing her sword, Shinobu dryly comments that this attack means that the demon doesn't want to get along with her. The daughter demon quickly begs Shinobu for mercy, stating that she would be killed if she disobeyed Rui. Shinobu, sympathizing with the creature's plight, says that she will cooperate with the demon if she answers a few of Shinobu's questions, the first of which being how many people she had killed. The demon's answer is five, but Shinobu assures her that she doesn't have to lie, complimenting her string technique from earlier, and the demon corrects her answer to eighty humans. Despite the creature's stubborn denial, the swordswoman notes that both of them came from the west side of the mountain, and, on that side, she had found forty of the demon's cocoons. Shinobu adds that she isn't angry, but only trying to be as accurate as possible. When asked what the point of checking this information is, Shinobu tells the elder daughter demon that in order for them to be friends and to satisfy those who have died, she will have to endure punishment, explaining in gruesome detail what she had in mind for this, and adding that the creature won't die from it, so there will be no aftereffects. Enraged, the demon attacks Shinobu again, but the Demon Slayer quickly bypasses her, simultaneously landing her Insect Breathing, Butterfly Dance: Caprice attack on the creature. She laments the demon's poor choice, turning and subsequently watching as the creature collapses. Shinobu tells the creature not to let her guard down just because she can't cut the demon's head off since, she explains, that she utilizes poison as her weapon instead. Shinobu then introduces herself as the Insect Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, stating that, although she may be the only one among her order to not possess the ability to cut off a demon's head, poison that can kill the creatures is still a potent tool. She then apologizes, realizing that the daughter demon is already dead and could not hear her explanation. Shinobu then proceeds to cut open the demon's silk cocoon, freeing Murata. She asks him if he is alright, and he asks what happened to the older sister demon, to which she answers that she had killed the demon with poison from wisteria, commenting afterwards on how lucky he is for only having his clothes melted off by the creature's attack.[9] She later attempts to attack Tanjiro Kamado and Nezuko Kamado, but her attack is deflected by Giyu. She questions his interference, noting that if he continues this course of action, everyone would hate him.[10] The Insect Hashira asks her fellow Demon Slayer to get out of the way, apologizing to him when he replies that he isn't hated. She then turns her attention to Tanjiro, telling him that he is protecting a demon and that he should get away from her. The young Demon Slayer exclaims that Nezuko is his sister, causing Shinobu to take pity on her and plan to kill her with a toxin that inflicts no pain. Giyu then instructs Tanjiro to run, which Shinobu notes to be a violation of Demon Slayer's conduct.[12] Later, while being restrained by Giyu's arm, she laments that she had been in the right to come kill demons and therefore had broken no rules, but noted that Giyu had, asking him what his intent was. Her fellow Hashira remains quiet, prompting her to angrily ask him to say something. Giyu replies that it had all started two years ago, causing Shinobu to note that the length of time was a problem and wonder if he was holding a grudge because she had said he was hated. She then extends a blade from her right shoe and prepares to attack Giyu, only to be stopped by an important message from a crow which said that Tanjiro and Nezuko are to be restrained and brought headquarters.[13] Later, at the headquarters of her order, the Demon Slayer stood alongside her fellow Hashira in front of a restrained Tanjiro.[14] Rehabilitation Training Arc She quickly informs the confused youth where he is and that he is on trial for violation of Demon Slayer conduct.[15] When Obanai Iguro points out that Giyu Tomioka had also committed this crime and asks how they are going to deal with him, Shinobu tells him that they will think of a punishment for him later, since she is more interested in hearing Tanjiro's story. She gives the youth some water with a painkiller mixed in and asks for his story, warning him not to strain himself on account of his injuries. She then listens quietly as Tanjiro explains his sister's circumstances.[16] Shinobu continues to listen to Tanjiro's story, but his dialogue is interrupted by the sudden appearance of Sanemi Shinazugawa, who grabs Nezuko's box. She warns her fellow Hashira not to act on his own, but he ignores her warning, stabbing the trapped Demon with his sword, much to her displeasure.[17] She then watches as an enraged Tanjiro charge the Wind Hashira,[18] and afterwards looked at an apologetic Mitsuri Kanroji.[19] Shinobu's leader, Kagaya Ubuyashiki, then arrived, causing her and her fellow Hashira to bow in respect.[20] Kagaya then asked for them all to accept Tanjiro and Nezuko, surprising Shinobu, who remained silent as her fellows argued over the decision,[21] and as Kagaya's assistant read Sakonji Urokodaki's letter. Shinobu continues her silence through even more arguments, but is shocked as her leader revealed that Tanjiro had come into contact with Muzan Kibutsuji. She and her fellow Hashira are then halted from even more debating by a simple gesture from their leader, with the Insect Hashira remaining silent as Kagaya explains more of his reasoning for pardoning Tanjiro and Nezuko.[23] Shinobu then cautions Tanjiro from using any of his breath techniques while pinned by Obanai, as his lungs might explode from the pressure. She calls out his name in alarm as he ignores her advice and tries anyways.[24] After the incident with Sanemi and Nezuko is resolved, she listens quietly as Kagaya explained the dedication of the Hashira to Tanjiro.[25] With everything resolved, Shinobu suggests they take care of Tanjiro over at her place, instructing the Kakushi to do this, and then waits for Kagaya to start the Hashira meeting.[26] After the meeting has ended, she visits Tanjiro and his friends at the Butterfly Estate, asking them how they are doing and instructing them to begin their Rehabilitation training Shinobu and Kanao were informed by a Kasugai Crow of the death of Kyojuro Rengoku. Like all the Hashira, Shinobu was fond of Kyojuro and as such was troubled by his death. After Kanao came back from a mission, she was greeted by Shinobu who informed her of Tanjiro's mission in the Swordsmith Village, as well as Nezuko gaining immunity to the sunlight. She then attends a meeting of Hashira in the Ubuyashiki Mansion attended by Amane Ubuyashiki, who was filling in for her husband due to Kagaya's familiar curse leaving him bed-ridden. She listened as Amane informed them of the Demon Slayer Marks. After the meeting concluded, Giyu attempted to immediately dismiss himself, much to the ire of Sanemi and Obanai. In response, Shinobu, uncharacteristically stern, asked Giyu to explain himself, causing him to respond like he wasn't like the rest of them. Before the situation could escalate any further, Gyomei made a powerful clap to cow them into silence, and proclaimed he had a proposition. The plan was to, instead of soley training their Tsugukos, a mass Hashira Training program would be exercised in order to both improve all Demon Slayers' physical abilities and overall health, bolstering the members of the Demon Slayer Corps significantly, and to improve the individual strength of each Hashira as well as practice coordinating their attacks together. Sometime during this meeting, the topic of Hashira bodyguards for Kagaya was raised, but was quickly shut down, due to Gyomei pointing out that Kagaya refused to have the Hashira serve as bodyguards, claiming they were to precious to expend on him alone. Shinobu pointed out that the Ubuyashikis haven't had bodyguards for generations. Like Giyu, Shinobu did not participate in Hashira Training, although unlike Giyu, she made it clear that she was in full support of the proposition. Instead she was tasked with collaborating with a demon doctor named Tamayo to come up with a plan to defeat Muzan Kibutsuji by Kagaya. Due to her extreme hatred of demons she was rather hesitant and mistrustful about it and asked her late sister for help to suppress her emotions. She is later approached by Kanao who announces that she is leaving to go train with the Wind Hashira before asking if she could train her after completing her section with the Stone Hashira. Shinobu responds that she's not participating in the training, and when Kanao asks why, Shinobu invites her in for a private conversation. Kanao meekly admits her desire to train with her older adopted sister, causing Shinobu to smile warmly and express happiness that Kanao is learning to speak what's on her mind more clearly. She then decides that now is the right time to reveal the demon that killed Kanae and how to defeat it. When Tamayo and her demon assistant Yushiro arrived, relations were tense. Shinobu was highly paranoid and inwardly hostile to the demons, and the notoriously overprotective Yushiro could sense it, causing him to be on edge, much to Tamayo's unease. However, they learned to work past their differences and created an Anti-Kibutsuji Drug. When she was alerted by a Kasugai Crow that an intruder had trespassed into the Ubuyashiki Mansion, she ran to the aid of her master and his family as fast as she could, alongside her fellow Hashira. However, before they could arrive, Kagaya detonated a large amount of explosives, not only decimating the Ubuyashiki Mansion, but killing both himself, and his wife and two elder daughters, who all refused to leave his side. Shinobu looked on in horror but pressed forward, where she encountered Gyomei fighting a shirtless, black-haired demon. Gyomei quickly announced that the demon was Muzan Kibutsuji himself, whilst also revealing that would not die if beheaded. After getting over the initial shock of finally encountering the King of Demons in person, Shinobu quickly sprung to action and was about to use Butterfly Dance, but before she could swing her sword, Muzan opened the Infinity Castle, forcing Shinobu and the rest of the Hashira and Tanjiro to plummet inside. Inside the Infinity Castle that Muzan Kibutsuji had created after Kagaya's suicidal move, Shinobu enters a room and discovers Doma eating a group of his own female disciples. When he finally notices her, Doma reacts with delight at having another meal walk right into his room, and thanks Nakime.[28] One of his disciples, still alive, begs Shinobu to save her, and Doma, irritated by this, attempts to finish her off, only for Shinobu to jump in and save her. She asks the young woman if she is alright, but before she can answer Shinobu's question, the young woman explodes and dies right in front of her eyes.[29] Angered by this, and Doma's insistence that he saved the girl by killing her, Shinobu notices a pair of sharp fans that Doma uses as his main weapon, and angrily inquires if he remembers the haori that originally belonged to her elder sister. Doma finally remembers her by the butterfly wing design haori that Kanae once wore, and playfully expresses his disappointment at not being able to eat Kanae due to the sun rising,[30] which further angers Shinobu. The Insect Hashira swiftly launches an attack at him using her Insect Breathing, Dance of the Bee Sting: True Flutter to inflict a powerful stab directly in Doma's right eyeball, which impresses him since he couldn't block it.[31] Although he is initially dismissive of her, since he correctly guessed that she lacks the physical strength to cut off a Demon's head, he becomes excited upon learning that Shinobu's true strength lies in poisoning her opponents. Shinobu hopes that the poison will be effective enough to kill him, but then learns, much to her disappointment, that Doma had already received information regarding her poison from her battle against the Spider Family of Lower Rank 5. Doma manages to break down and render her poison non-lethal, healing himself from her attack.[32] She is further backed into a corner due to Doma now rapidly developing antibodies and adjusting his body against her poison so that, after a mere five slashes and injections of poison, he is now entirely resistant to it. Also, due his Blood Demon Art of frozen mist, it is becoming increasingly difficult for Shinobu to breathe. Now hedging her bets on injecting a large dose to kill him by using a six stab attack, Shinobu strikes him using Insect Breathing, Dance of the Dragonfly: Compound Eye Hexagon and successfully hits him. However, as she attacks him, he simultaneously attacks her, cutting both her collarbone and ribs and puncturing one of her lungs.[34] Finally near her wits' end and almost losing any hope of victory, Shinobu attempts to draw strength from replaying her older sister's words of encouragement in her head. Shinobu then prepares to strike at Doma again, despite her serious injuries and the immense pain she was in, and attacks him using Insect Breathing, Dance of the Centipede: Hundred-Legged Zigzag, to confuse him. She strikes Doma directly through his neck, impaling him and sending him flying towards the ceiling. Exhausted and wounded, Shinobu is triumphant upon seeing Doma being poisoned and seemingly dying from her attack. Other information: Shinobu's Demon Slayer uniform's jacket is originally designed to leave the center of the chest area open, similar to Mitsuri Kanroji's, but, as Shinobu disliked this aspect of its design, she burned the original uniform right in front of the Kakushi who had just given it to her and requested a fully buttoned version of the uniform instead Shinobu and Mitsuri get along quite well due to them having been the only two female Hashira after Kanae Kocho's death. Mitsuri also teaches her western cooking Shinobu's parents worked in compounding medicine, a reason why Shinobu is also very talented with medicines. The amount of wisteria poison in Shinobu's body was originally stated to be seventy times the lethal amount to kill a demon in the magazine version, but it was later corrected by Koyoharu Gotoge to be seven hundred times in the volume edition. Shinobu's blade was designed and created by the chief of the Swordsmith Village, Tecchin Tecchikawahara, likely due to its unique shape requiring the chief's expertise to forge. There was some tension during the cooperative research time between Shinobu and Yushiro. Shinobu held some distrust towards Tamayo due to her being a demon and Yushiro wished to kill Shinobu as a result of it. Shinobu has a pet goldfish named Fugu According to Giyu Tomioka, Shinobu can't stand furry animals. Although Shinobu wouldn't admit it, she was a natural airhead. The names she came up with for Kanao Tsuyuri were so bizarre that upon seeing them, Kanae broke down into such an "EH?!" expression that even Aoi Kanzaki wasn't able to smoothen things out.Shinobu viewed the other Hashira as follows:[47] "He's a good guy but our conversations don't always make sense." - Flame Hashira "I treated his wounds and examined his memory loss. He has difficulty choosing words, but he's a good kid at heart." - Mist Hashira "Sometimes we discuss physical movement (in swordsmanship)." - Serpent Hashira "I deeply respect him." - Stone Hashira "He should talk more." - Water Hashira "We clashed when he tried to take Aoi and the others on a mission." - Sound Hashira "I love her. She's cheerful and cute." - Love Hashira "When we meet, he always asks how I've been." - Wind Hashira Shinobu's favorite food is ginger tsukudani. Hashiras: Hashira is the highest rank that Demon Slayers can obtain in the Demon Slayer Corps. Those who hold the position are regarded as the most powerful and skilled combatants in the entire organization, protecting humanity against more dangerous threats that cannot be handled by other Demon Slayers. The Hashira, in accordance with their great strength, hold the highest authority in the organization, second only to the Corps leader, Kagaya Ubuyashiki, and later, Kiriya Ubuyashiki.[1] The Hashira are all assigned a specific region that they are required to patrol, usually to gather information about the demons inhabiting said area and to improve their swordsmanship. They are also deployed on missions only if lower-ranking members are unable to complete it. Each Hashira is the master of a unique Breathing Style, some of which are even created by themselves. Interestingly, swordsmen who can use Flame Breathing and Water Breathing have become Hashira in every era, with no exceptions thus far. Demon slayer Corps: The Demon Slayer Corps is an organization dedicated to hunting and killing demons. Most members of the Demon Slayer Corps are combatants, known as Demon Slayers. As the Demon Slayer Corps isn't officially recognized by the government,[2][3] its members are forced to work in secrecy, which means that Demon Slayers cannot openly carry their swords in public. The majority of people are unaware of the existence of demons, and even if Demon Slayers were to reveal the truth about their job, they would be met with skepticism and disbelief from most individuals. Allowing Demon Slayers to openly wield swords would only incite chaos and confusion among the general population. By maintaining a low profile and avoid drawing unnecessary attention, they can carry out their duties covertly and effectively.[3] Nevertheless, whispers of the Demon Slayers have permeated public consciousness, existing as mere folklore in the minds of some. However, when civilians encounter demons or witness a Demon Slayer engaging a demon firsthand, they come face-to-face with the reality of their existence and the truth behind the tales they've heard.[4][5] Without any support from the government or other sponsors, the Demon Slayer Corps relies solely on the resources provided by the Ubuyashiki family for its daily operations. The Ubuyashiki family's accumulated wealth, acquired through their unique gift of foresight,[6] plays a vital role in ensuring that the Demon Slayers have the necessary means and resources to fulfill their duties effectively. Tengen Uzui: Tengen Uzui (ๅฎ‡ใ†้ซ„ใšใ„ ๅคฉใฆใ‚“ๅ…ƒใ’ใ‚“ Uzui Tengen?) is a major supporting character of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and a major character in the Entertainment District Arc. He was a former member of the Demon Slayer Corps, standing as the Sound Hashira (้ŸณใŠใจๆŸฑใฐใ—ใ‚‰ Oto Bashira?) of the Taisho era. Butterfly mansion: The majority of healing at the mansion is done by Shinobu Kocho, though there are also attendants known as Kakushi who run errands and assist in watching over the injured. On top of this, there are others who live in the mansion that are not Demon Slayers, but offer training regiments to facilitate the recovery process and help the injured Demon Slayers reach top condition again. For example, Aoi Kanzaki creates a training regiment meant to help Tanjiro Kamado, Inosuke Hashibira, and Zenitsu Agatsuma recover after their battles on Mount Natagumo.[1] The first Flower Breathing user planted the cherry blossom tree in the garden of the Butterfly Mansion, and gave it the name "Victory Tree". After the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, Kanao Tsuyuri visited the tree to tell it that they are victorious.[2] The Butterfly Mansion (่ถใกใ‚‡ใ†ๅฑ‹ใ‚„ๆ•ทใ—ใ Chล Yashiki?) is the manor that the late Flower Hashira Kanae Kocho, Insect Hashira Shinobu Kocho, Tsuguko Kanao Tsuyuri, and assistants Aoi Kanzaki, Sumi Nakahara, Kiyo Terauchi, and Naho Takada live in. The manor is often used as a recovery base for injured Demon Slayers.
