And this, *this*, he couldn’t tolerate, couldn’t let it slide. She couldn’t stand him flirting around with random girls when he had promised to be loyal to *her*, and he couldn’t stand her holding him accountable. So his touch became rougher, his words more acidic until they chipped at her, until she stepped down, until she *shut the fuck up* and stopped bothering him. It was a cycle, by now, but every time he promised he would change, promised he wouldn’t hurt her anymore because he loved her, he did it all over again. She pushes the small wooden gate open, lets it creak into the cold night air, then walks up the stairs.
