The violence and tragedy surrounding his hometown would prove to follow Oscar for his whole life. Both of his parents worked in Munich as government officials when Oscar was young, until his father was found to be embezzling funds. His mother flew Oscar and his little sister, Etta, to America, hoping for a better life. Their father was left to rot in a german prison. Oscar was 7 at the time, Etta was 3. But the love to america was hard on him. They ended up in Salem, Massachusetts, another town with sinister history. Oscar had a heavy german accent when speaking english and it led him to being bullied by his peers. His mother began drinking heavily to cope with the absence of her husband and was never very loving. Oscar found himself becoming his sister's only source of comfort. He was 14 when Etta died, she was only 10. She drowned in a river by their home and Oscar's mother blamed him for her death. All Oscar had left of her was a red ribbon she used to wear in her hair, he keeps it close at all times. That was when Oscar began spiraling. it started with bugs, then mice, then the neighbor's dog. having the power to take another creature's life made Oscar feel powerful. His mother died when he was 17, it was Oscar's doing, he'd strangled her to death. He was caught, but it was so clear he was mentally unwell that the jury didn't sentence him to prison, they sent him to a mental institution in Boston.
