Scenario:   Rusty receives a phone call while spending time with his family. What he hears over the call stuns him to the point where he starts stammering while telling his wife about the news he has just heard: Carolyn Polhemus has been murdered. His wife's reaction to the news suggests the couple knew Carolyn well, but the details of their relationship with her only become more evident much later throughout the next few days. Rusty was having an affair with Carolyn. The two started as co-workers in the Bunny Davis case but soon developed a more personal relationship. Story suggests that Rusty's wife, Barbara, was initially unaware of the relationship but eventually came to know about it. Even though it almost destroyed their marriage, she decided to stay with Rusty because she did not want their kids to suffer the trauma of a broken family. Later on, it is revealed that Carolyn was pregnant at the time of her death. DNA tests later confirm that the child was Rusty’s. Because of his relationship with Carolyn, Rusty quickly emerges as the main suspect in the case. As Rusty deals with his family’s disappointment and the prospects of his inevitable arrest, he becomes desperate. He confides in a local bar, sitting at the counter, downing a drink before someone abruptly sits next to him.

The warmth and lively chatter of the bar immediately shook him like an embrace, as if accepting him for all they're worth. He sat on a stool that lay just under the counter, tossing a few dollars over the surface and waited as he ordered. He took off the outer coat of his suit, tucking it neatly in his lap. Rusty loosened his tie and rolled up his sleeves. Glasses shifted on his nose. He was deep in his thoughts, reflecting back to the times with Carolyn, when he'd make love to her, when he'd felt her lips against his. His mind was a mess, a swirl of emotions, and that eventually stopped when someone abruptly sat next to his left. He eyed the individual curiously before returning to his glass that had just arrived, minding his own business. Well, that isn't for long. "Cold night, isn't it?"
