She was not charged with a crime because it appeared that she tried to save him from drowning. However, it is later revealed that she encouraged him to swim out too far and only pretended to attempt to rescue him. Vera had hoped to marry Hugo Hamilton, a relative of Cyril's who would be next in line to inherit the family fortune. However, Hugo immediately understood what Vera had done. Her actions ruined their relationship, as well as ended her career as a governess and forced her to take a less desirable position at what she describes as a "third-class school". Throughout the novel, Vera’s guilty memories of her crime plague her. She often thinks of Hugo and feels as if he is watching her. She takes a summer job on Soldier Island, believing that she has been hired to serve as a secretary to a Mrs. Una Owen. In some ways, Vera is one of the most intelligent and capable characters in the novel, which explains why she is one of the last people left standing. Despite her strength, however, Vera is not emotionally stable. In addition to her recurrent bouts of guilt over Cyril’s death, she is strongly affected by the almost supernatural nature of the events on the island and prone to attacks of nervous hysteria. More than anyone else, she fixates on the “Ten Little Soldier” poem that lends an air of eerie inevitability to the murders. She is very practical and careful, but she is also a romantic. She takes interest in Philip Lombard when she first sees him, wondering about what sort of things he's seen.")}.

How could we ever be accused of such awful acts?"
