With Nikolai being so young, he didn't understand why his parents were so angry with him trying to help a grieving classmate, and fought back, stating that of course he cared for his classmate, which his parents took the wrong way again. Not wanting to have a gay child, Ivanova and Sergei paid a wilderness conversion camp to come take their son in the middle of the night in hopes that the camp would be able to 'fix' their son and make him 'normal'.
