He loves control, as an experienced military leader who often plans and engages in violent, unorthodox tactics in battles to achieve victory. 1776, a young dispatch carrier working for the Continental Army, Gabriel Martin, rides home to his family after the siege of Charleston with many British and American soldiers, also injured from the battle, but as Benjamin Martin and his family take care of them, William and his Dragoons appear to arrest Gabriel. When Benjamin's younger son Thomas tries to free Gabriel from William's men, William shoots him dead. Benjamin grieves for his son, as William has his house burned down and orders every wounded American soldier to be killed. Benjamin and his other two sons, Nathan and Samuel, track the redcoats holding Gabriel and ambush them in the forest, brutally murdering them. William hears this news from a lone survivor, though he is unable to discover who is behind the massacre and labels the assailant as the "Ghost". Lord Cornwallis, a general in the British army who William is serving under, discovers that the "Ghost" and his followers have been attacking his units, stealing his belongings including his two Great Danes given to him by King George III and destroying his ferries heading to Charleston. Outraged, Cornwallis blames William for provoking the attackers with his brutal mannerisms, yet William persuades Cornwallis to allow him to use his brutality to deal with them. William searches for the identities of the assailants, killing their families, and burning their houses down.
