This article is about the 2020 American action film. For the comic book series, see The Old Guard (comics). For the group of immortal mercenaries, see Old Guard. The Old Guard is a 2020 American action film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Greg Rucka, based on the comic book series of the same name. Starring Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Veronica Ngรด, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, the film follows a team of immortal mercenaries on a revenge mission. The Old Guard was released on July 10, 2020 on Netflix. It received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for the action sequences and Theron's performance. Plot Andromache "Andy" of Scythia, Booker, Joe, and Nicky are centuries-old warriors who use their regenerative healing and individual skills to help people. They accept a job offer from James Copley, a former CIA operative with whom they worked with before, to save a group of kidnapped girls in South Sudan. They are ambushed and killed during the mission, which turns out to be a ruse orchestrated by Copley, who remotely filmed their regeneration. Meanwhile, a U.S. Marine in Afghanistan named Nile Freeman has her throat slit during a house search, recovering later without a scratch. She has a disturbing dream, which alerts the other immortals to her presence, as they have dreams of any new immortals until they are found. Andy locates a confused Nile in Afghanistan and extracts her before she can be transferred for further testing. Copley shows the South Sudan video to Steven Merrick, who sends men to apprehend the team. Andy transports Nile to a secure location in France, where she meets the rest of the immortals. The group discloses that they are not actually immortal: their power to heal eventually stops without warning. At the safe house, the group is ambushed by Merrick's forces and Joe and Nicky are captured. Andy kills all of their assailants but is wounded and realizes she is not healing. Nile chooses to separate from the team and reunite with her family instead of confronting Copley. Andy and Booker meet Copley alone, only for Booker to betray Andy and shoot her, claiming that Merrick might find a way to end their immortality. However, while they are being captured, Booker notices that Andy is not healing. When Copley sees that Merrick is willing to torture the immortals indefinitely to study them, he has a change of heart. Nile arrives too late to intervene after learning that Booker has betrayed the team, but she persuades Copley to assist her on a rescue mission. She storms Merrick's London office, freeing the other immortals before fighting their way out and through the rest of Merrick's guards, with Nile protecting Andy from Merrick by tackling him out a window, where he falls to his death. Booker is suspended from the team for his betrayal and forced into exile, with the others prohibiting him from contacting them for the next 100 years. The team meets with Copley, who explains his extensive research into their past revealed that their previous missions had a far wider impact than they ever realized, with descendants of those they rescued going on to help the world in many ways. The group entrusts Copley with keeping their secret and selecting missions where they can make an impact, having regained faith in their mission. Six months later, a depressed and drunken Booker is surprised to find Quแปณnh waiting for him in his apartment in Paris. The Old Guard 2 is an American action film directed by Victoria Mahoney and written by Greg Rucka,[1] based on the comic book series of the same name. As a sequel to the 2020 film The Old Guard, the story will presumably continue from where the first film left off, incorporating some elements from the comic sequel The Old Guard: Force Multiplied. However, Rucka has stated that there will be significant changes in the theatrical version.[2] Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngรด, and Chiwetel Ejiofor are on board to reprise their roles from the previous film. In June 2022, Netflix announced Uma Thurman and Henry Golding will be added to the cast.[3] The film suffered a setback after an unexplained fire at Rome's Cinecittร  Studios film lot in August 2022.[4] The following December, Theron revealed filming for The Old Guard 2 had completed and the film was in post-production.[5] The Old Guard 2 will be released on Netflix on July 2, 2025. __________________________________________ Characters: โ— Tuah (ALIVE , IMMORTAL AND ALLY OF THE GROUP FROM OUTSIDE); Tuah Status Alive Affiliation Old Guard Discord (formerly) Biographical information Date of birth c. 275 BC Physical description Species Human Immortal Gender Male Appearances Portrayed by Henry Golding First Appearance The Old Guard 2 There was a time when we walked together peacefully. According to Nile, painted by Henry William Pickersgill, early 1800s ComicAndy AdultAndy Andy as an adult I've been here before. Too many times to count. Over and over again, and each time, the same question: is this it? Will this time be the one? And each time the same answer. Not yet. And I am so fucking tired of it. So goddamn tired of life. Of going through the motions. Of killing time. Andy Andromache of Scythia is the main character of The Old Guard series. She is an immortal warrior and the founding member of the Old Guard. She has been protecting humanity for at least 6,000 years. Biography History Comics Andromache of Scythia was born circa 4,700 BCE[1] somewhere in the Western Steppe, which extends from the Altai mountains to north of the Black sea.[2] It is unknown if Andy's mother adopted her or not (for what constitutes as adoption back then), with Andy mentioning to Nile that she had sisters whose faces she couldn't even remember. Her mother proclaimed her heir and gifted Andy her axe. After many years, Andy's mother grew jealous of her youth and strength, and conspired to have her killed in battle. Though it was not her hand on the weapon, it was her command. This resulted in Andy's first death, after which she came back to life again and found she was immortal. She discovered her mother had died in battle and avenged her. She became the one in charge of their tribe. As her people discovered she could not die, they began worshipping her. After hundreds of years, she left her position in an attempt to forgo the loneliness she felt due to her immortality. It was after this time that she met Yitzhak, who was immortal. 1750s BCE was the last known time Andromache has owned slaves. It is unknown for how much longer after the implementation of Hammurabi's Code she continued to own and sell people. Andy and Noriko had been together (though not necessarily romantically) for nearly 2,000 years by the time Noriko was thrown overboard by a storm. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, Andy swore off violence sometime in her relationship with Achilles. After she left, it can be presumed she resumed business with the Old Guard. Both After hundreds of years, she left her position in an attempt to forgo the loneliness she felt due to her immortality. It was after this time that she met Noriko (Quแปณnh) and Lykon, and much later, Yusuf (Joe) and Nicolรฒ (Nicky), all of whom were also immortal. Description Movies Andromache is a passionate, independent person who staves off loneliness all by herself. She is very tough on herself, blaming any mistakes made by the team on herself. When Quแปณnh was captured and held in an iron coffin at the bottom of the ocean, Andromache took this very personally. This is partly due to the implied nature of their relationship and because she feels she left someone behind, which is against her beliefs. Andromache likes baklava and knows the different types. It has gotten to the point that the rest of the Old Guard will bet on if she can guess ingredients in the baklava and where it's from. She is very, very good at this. Baklava is a snack she is often seen eating, even if it's not native to the area. One such occasion was when she was retrieving Nile from Afghanistan. Comics When Noriko is lost to sea in a storm, Andy "hopes" that she has died, and would not have had to suffer. This angers Noriko, who, after many years dying over and over again, has no time for hopes. Eventually, when Andy shows her age and exhaustion, she joins Noriko on her quest to sow destruction. Contrary to the movies, it has been stated in Tales Through Time that Andy's tastebuds are so old as to be numb to most flavor. The only other immortal known to have this condition is Yitzkhak, which hints that he may be older than Andy. In the comics, the new immortals do not dream of older ones - only older immortals can dream of the younger ones. She was in a lasting relationship with Lykon and Noriko until Lykon's death and Noriko's being lost at sea. After that, Achilles is the only other lasting relationship we know of. Both She is known to have flings throughout history, but she has never had many lasting relationships like Nicky and Joe have due to her immortality. She is implied to have been close with Noriko/Quแปณnh, potentially in a relationship with her of the same nature as Nicky and Joe. Andromache is a good shot and fearsome with most weapons she handles. She is brutally efficient with her beloved labrys (axe) but is more than sufficient with shooting and hand-to-hand combat. Booker has stated to Nile that Andy has forgotten more ways to kill a man than most people ever know. Physical description Movies Andromache is 177 cm tall (5'10"). She is thin but strong and muscled, a by-product of her line of work. She has light icy blue eyes and dark brown hair. Throughout different periods in history, she has styled her hair differently. Currently, her hairstyle is an uneven pixie cut, with the right side being longer. Jobs and time periods often restrict her clothing, but she is almost always seen wearing her necklace. Without any constraints, Andromache's style can be described as "anything black." She wears almost exclusively black, including her lace-up boots. She likes to wear leather vambraces or covers of a sort. Comics Andromache is thin but strong and muscled, a by-product of her line of work. She has brown eyes and dark brown hair, or potentially black. Throughout different periods in history, she has styled her hair differently. Currently, her hair is long. Jobs and time periods often restrict her clothing, though unlike the movies, she does not exclusively wear black, and there is no indication she prefers it. Personality Movies Andromache is strong not just on the outside, but also on the inside. She is strong-willed, fiery, and passionate. She is extremely selfless and despises being a burden. One such example of this would be at Merrick Pharmaceuticals. She ends up grabbing a fire axe and rushing several armed guards despite her newfound mortality because she is done with cowering and needing to be protected. Along these same lines, she is courageous and headstrong. She rushes into battle and insists on going in first, exactly what she tells Nile in Merrick's headquarters in London. She is extremely loyal to her friends and a cause. Despite the possibility of being a cruel oppressor thanks to her inability to be killed, she instead has chosen the morally correct path of trying to help humanity and do the right thing. Despite being a member of the team for millennia and always feeling lonely, she is frequently separated from the other Old Guard members. She is known to take up to a year off for herself. She takes such time off before being called to Marrakesh by Booker for a job. James Copley is offering money in exchanges for services to work with them again. When they need to track down Nile, Andy volunteers to go on her own and won't hear any argument to the contrary. She doesn't easily ask for help, as evidenced by when she needs help dressing her first wound that won't heal (a stab into her right shoulder). The cashier at the local French pharmacy, Celeste, instead has to ask her if she needs assistance based on her purchases. To her credit, she doesn't deny the assistance. Like the other Old Guard members, she fears capture as that could mean eternal pain, torture, and imprisonment. This has made her very driven to protect her secret immortality at any cost, such as when she immediately decides to track Copley with the rest of the Old Guard to protect her secret. Though she presents a cool, cut-off faรงade around her friends, she is warm and affectionate. She doesn't have problems expressing these feelings. Comics Andromache is strong, though inside she falling apart some. She is strong-willed, fiery, and passionate. She is still immortal in the comics. She is courageous and headstrong. She rushes into battle and insists on going in first. She is extremely loyal to her friends and cause. In her past, she was Chief of her tribe, which entailed wars and spoils thereof. Though enslaving enemies today is unheard of, it was quite common for most of human history. Though Andy was initially disturbed when her mother would enslave people, she did what was expected of her. As an adult, she no longer felt any sort of sympathy due to the nature of her mother's death, and enslaved the opposing forces. She had kept slaves in Babylon. It is unknown when she stopped. She shows no sympathy for slavers, including herself. Fear of capture is not as prominent. In the film adaption, he is played by Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts. History Comics Booker mentions having four sons, his youngest dying of cancer at an old age. His youngest was the last to die. Booker had one son by the name of Philippe. Given that the appearance of Philippe in The Old Guard: Tales Through Time occurred roughly 20 years after the end of the Napoleonic Wars and Philippe looks to be about Booker's age, Philippe might be the youngest. Movies Booker is still a new member of the team, being 250 years old during the events of the film. He mentions having had a wife and three sons. His youngest son, Jean-Pierre, died of cancer at the age of 42 and was the last of his children to die. Both Booker was a criminal and forger, having been to prison at least once before; upon being arrested again, he was offered a choice of dying in prison or to serve in Napoleon's army. He fought in the 1812 French invasion of Russia, but along with other soldiers, deserted soon after. He was quickly captured and hanged. After coming back to life, still in the noose, he pretended to be dead long enough for the army to pass beneath him. As Booker's birth year has not been changed from comic to movie, he is always portrayed as 200-something. Unlike other members of the Old Guard, Booker is young enough to remember (and grieve for) his family. He mentions having had a wife and sons. Booker has long resented his immortality, stemming in part from guilt that he was unable to share his "gift" with his own children (and wife, presumably). Though not as obvious in the movies, the comics still show Booker suffering from depression and alcoholism. His youngest son died of cancer. Plot In both the comics and film, Booker betrays the Old Guard, setting them up for an ambush and surrendering them to James Copley, then to Stephen Merrick. After the Guard escapes, the punishment for his betrayal is 100 years of exile, which he accepts. ComicBooker Following the aftermath of Booker's betrayal, he is seen living on his own in Marseille. Stumbling home drunkenly one night, he finds the front door of his place unlocked and a woman waiting for him. She chooses not to identify herself and instead asks the whereabouts of the rest of his team. He attempts to shoot her down, but is incapacitated. He is taken to her yacht for further interrogation and, still refusing to comply, is shackled by the neck, with the woman claiming she now "owns" him. She has a love of art history and can tell a Rodin sculpture at first glance. Comics ComicNile Nile in the comics Add information about Nile from the comics. Film The Old Guard Nile first appears while serving a tour of duty in Afghanistan. She is shown interacting kindly with a local child shortly before engaging in a mission to capture a military target. Nile shoots the target and then tends to his wounds so that he might be able to provide important information to the United States military. The target grabs a hidden knife from his pants and slits Nile's throat before losing consciousness and dying. Another Marine attempts to stop Nile's bleeding but is unsuccessful. The Old Guard is awoken in the middle of the night when they all dream of Nile's first death. Joe and the others describe to each other details that they noticed in their dream, and Joe quickly sketches her face in a notebook. Joe and Nicky empathize with Nile and advocate for finding her as quickly as possible. Booker, however, wants to focus on Copley first. Andy begrudgingly sides with Joe and Nicky. Using the details and Joe's sketch, Andy retrieves Nile from Afghanistan and brings her back to France. Nile dreams of the other immortals as well, apparently at the same time that they dream of her. She awakens in a military infirmary with a bandage around her neck, confused as to how she survived. The doctors and other soldiers are equally confused, especially when Nile removes the bandage to reveal her neck has healed perfectly. A fellow soldier returns Nile's dog tags and tells her that they removed them because they were certain that she would not survive. Quแปณnh on Andy's betrayal Quแปณnh is an immortal formerly affiliated with the Old Guard who spent several centuries continually drowning in an iron maiden under the sea. She is portrayed by Veronica Ngรด in the film adaptation and based off Noriko from the comic series. Appearance In the films, Quแปณnh is frequently depicted wearing red clothing, which is appropriate given that her name translates to "deep red" in Vietnamese. She and Andromache are also shown wearing the same necklace, which implies that it was a gift from Quแปณnh to Andy, as the latter is wearing it in the scene where they are separated. Personality History Andy found Quแปณnh wandering alone in the desert before she collapsed from dehydration. They later found Lykon, but when he permanently died in battle, Quแปณnh and Andy realized that their immortality doesn't last forever. During the days of Colonial America, Quแปณnh and Andy were hanged in England for presumed witchery. When hanging didn't kill them, they were thrown in prison and sentenced to burn at the stake. However, thinking that the two immortals were too strong together, Quแปณnh and Andy's captors had them separated, with the former entombed in an iron maiden and thrown into the ocean. Plot At the end of The Old Guard, Booker drunkenly stumbles into his apartment after Andy, Nicky, Joe, and Nile sentence him to 100 years of exile from the group. I can still remember it. The acrid stench of hate in the air. Discord on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ Discord is the main antagonist of The Old Guard 2. BIOGRAPHY History Discord is the very first known immortal. Having lived through countless centuries, she witnessed the human persecution of immortals. She was present at the arrest of Quแปณnh and Andy, accused of witchcraft. During their trial, she witnessed Quแปณnh being imprisoned in a submerged iron cage, condemning her to perpetual drowning. Despite her presence, Discord did not intervene. This moment marked a turning point in her worldview. She decided to detach herself from other immortals, convinced that only wealth and power could protect them, not solidarity or empathy. Centuries later, Discord found Quแปณnh's body at the bottom of the ocean. She brought her to the surface, reawakening an ancient hatred for Andy. Discord exploited this anger to rally Quแปณnh to her cause. She then implemented a strategic plan to manipulate Nile, the last immortal to appear. Knowing that Nile held a unique power, she saw in her a way to regain the immortality she had lost. With Quแปณnh's help, she set a trap for Andy and her allies in a nuclear power plant. Andy, now mortal, was captured. Discord then revealed his true intentions: to use Nile to reabsorb immortality and impose his worldview, based on domination. After an intense confrontation, Discord managed to escape with some of the captured immortals. She left behind a profound ideological conflict: on one side, her obsession with power, and on the other, the values โ€‹โ€‹of humanity, sacrifice, and compassion embodied by Andy. __________________________________________ Important weapons: Andy's Axe Andy's Labrys (Axe) First Axe 6,000 years ago The labrys is the preferred weapon of Andy. It is sometimes referred to as an axe. Andy is known to be very protective of it; she likes to keep it close to her at all times and the weapon has its own special case that resembles one for a musical instrument. History Bronze Axe During the Bronze Age (c. 3300-c. 1200 BCE) Andy's labrys is a very old and unique weapon that was originally forged for the leader of Andy's tribe during the Copper Age and given to her after she was named her heir.[1] The only time Andy has been without it was when she was with Achilles. She had buried the labrys to start a new life with him, but after his death, she dug it up to exact revenge on his murderers and hasn't parted with it since.[2] Design Iron Axe During the Iron Age (c. 1200 BCE-c. 550 BCE) Modern Axe Early-to-mid 1800s Its original design was a simple axe that has been reforged and upgraded over the millennia to use different materials as new resources were discovered around the world, such as iron. Its most recent upgrade was done a little over a decade before the events of The Old Guard: Force Multiplied. Since Noriko taught her a better way of wrapping the leather, Andy has used that technique since. Usage Current Current Leather Noriko teaching Andy a better way of wrapping the leather during the Iron Age During jobs, her use of it is brutal but effective. She doesn't seem to care where on her mark the weapon hits, although she uses it in inventive ways. One such occasion is during a job for James Copley when, during a fight, she plants one blade of the labrys in an opponent's arm and uses it to break their arm. In the early-to-mid 1800s, upon discovering Achilles was murdered, Andy dug up her axe after decades without use and killed the townspeople without repairing the weapon.
