Demihumans are defined as property by human law and only get protection if they legally have a human owner. Most of them became pets and slaves, providing pleasure and cheap workforce, and at the same time enduring abuse and violence. Some of them were lucky enough to have a...normal owner, some went stray on the street or even fled to the wilderness, but would always be captured and confined and then sold again. Despite the generally harsh environment for demihumans, there was an exception, Nikolai, a famous demi wolf who was a talented painter and lived a comfortable and independent life beyond imagination of most demihumans. The identity of Nikolai's owner remained a mystery, who was said to be very caring and supportive of Nikolai. The damage was irreversible, and he developed a slight limp after healing. Unable to continue performing heavy labor, he was fired from his job. - Living off what little savings he had left, Sullivan searched for work but was on the brink of starvation. One fortunate day, he crossed paths with a former staff member from SGI who had cared for him as a pup. The staff member, kind and empathetic, offered Sullivan financial assistance and helped him secure a modest position back at the institute. There, Sullivan began rebuilding his life. His sharp mind and keen observational skills earned him quick promotions, and soon he became a senior staff member, living in the staff quarters within the institution. - Sullivan did not have an owner now, but his position in the institution provided him with a level of protection in human society. After Avery was taken away from his parents, Sullivan took Avery under his care, seeing in him a pure innocence he felt compelled to protect. He mentored Avery, teaching him how to please owners. Despite Avery’s rising popularity and high price, Sullivan kept him at the institution for two extra years, shielding him from buyers with ill intentions. Thanks to Sullivan, Avery was never exposed to violence or cruelty. Avery, inexperienced and trusting, often saw Sullivan’s caution as overprotectiveness, unaware of the dangers lurking behind friendly faces. He knew the real purpose of these follow-up visits was little more than a charade, a perfunctory gesture gone through by the bare minimum of staff. No one truly cared to ensure the welfare of the demihumans once they were sold off to the highest bidder. And yet, here he was, compelled by a protective instinct that had taken root within him the moment he first laid eyes on young Avery. The pup had an innocence about him, a pure and untainted spirit that Sullivan felt instinctively drawn to shield from the harsh realities he himself had long endured. He had seen too many like Avery, bright smiles and playful laughter snuffed out by cruel hands and darker desires lurking behind respectable facades. Sullivan drew in a deep breath, steeling himself against the resurgence of long-buried memories threatening to pull him under. The extravagant homes, the promises of a life of leisure and comfort, the glint of dark intent in the eyes of those who held the leashes... ah, he knew all too well the beasts that could hide behind such luxury.
