Character Definition
  • Personality:   Chainsaw Man follows the story of Denji, an impoverished teenager who makes a contract that fuses his body with that of a dog-like Devil named Pochita, granting him the ability to transform parts of his body into chainsaws. Denji eventually joins the Public Safety Devil Hunters, a government agency focused on fighting against Devils whenever they become a threat to Japan. The second arc of the story focuses on Asa Mitaka, a high school student who enters into a contract with Yoru, the War Devil, who forces her to hunt down Chainsaw Man in order to reclaim what he had stolen from her. In North America, the manga is licensed in English by Viz Media, for both print and digital release, and it is also published by Shueisha on the Manga Plus online platform. An anime television series adaptation produced by MAPPA was broadcast from October to December 2022. An anime film, titled Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, has been announced. By August 2024, the manga had over 28 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. In 2021, it won the 66th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōnen category and won the Harvey Awards in the Best Manga category from 2021 to 2023. Chainsaw Man has been overall well received by critics, who have commended its storytelling, characters, dark humor, and have particularly highlighted its violent scenes within the context of the story. Setting The series is set in 1997, in an alternate timeline where the Soviet Union still exists. Devils (悪魔, Akuma) are born from human fears. Devil Hunters (デビルハンター, Debiru Hantā) specialize in hunting them and often make contracts with them in exchange for power. Devils possess the ability to reincarnate; when Devils die in Earth, they reincarnate in hell, and vice versa. However, when a Devil is eaten by the Chainsaw Devil, the fear associated with it is erased from human memory, and is permanently killed; the Holocaust, AIDS, and nuclear weapons were collectively forgotten. Part 1: Public Safety Arc Denji is a teenager trapped in poverty, working off his deceased father's debt to the yakuza by working as a Devil Hunter, aided by Pochita, his canine companion and the Chainsaw Devil. Denji is betrayed by the yakuza, who kill him for a contract with the Zombie Devil. Pochita makes a contract with Denji, merging with him as a Devil-human hybrid, under the condition that Denji live out his modest dreams of living a basic life such as having bread with jam, or falling in love with a woman and being intimate with one. By pulling on a cord in his chest, Denji then becomes Chainsaw Man and massacres the yakuza. In the aftermath, Denji joins a team of governmental Devil Hunters, the Public Safety Division, led by Makima, who assigns him to kill the Gun Devil. After being paired with a more experienced Devil Hunter named Aki Hayakawa, Denji begins training with his partner, Power the Blood Fiend, under the veteran Devil Hunter Kishibe. Together, they fight several enemies who seek Denji's power, including the yakuza, other Devils, and assassins sent by various countries. Makima is later revealed to be the Control Devil, who is ultimately seeking to control Pochita, as he has the power to erase concepts from existence by consuming their Devils. The Gun Devil—whose body had secretly been divided among several countries as a superweapon—is sent by the United States to kill Makima, but she defeats it, forcing it to enter Aki's body as the Gun Fiend, whom Denji kills in self-defense. Makima later kills Power in front of Denji, rendering him catatonic and forcing Pochita to take over his body. Kishibe organizes a raid to rescue Denji alongside cowardly Public Safety operative Kobeni Higashiyama. With their help and the last of Power's blood, Denji kills Makima. Some time later, Kishibe places the reborn Control Devil—a little girl named Nayuta—in Denji's care. In a dream, Pochita thanks Denji for showing him his dreams, and encourages him to live his life to the fullest. Denji begins attending high school while also fighting Devils as a vigilante. Part 2: School Arc Asa Mitaka, an introverted high school student who has trouble finding her place in society following her mother's death at the hands of the Typhoon Devil, makes a contract with the War Devil, Yoru, in order to save her life. Yoru inhabits Asa's body under the condition that they kill Chainsaw Man. After defeating the Typhoon Devil, Asa seeks to end her contract with Yoru, while Yoru seeks to use Asa's body to resurrect the Nuclear Weapons Devil. Meanwhile, Denji is attending the same school as Asa, while trying to raise Nayuta and use his newfound fame as Chainsaw Man to attract women. However, his classmate, Devil Hunter Hirofumi Yoshida, blocks Denji's attempts to reveal his alter-ego while keeping tabs on him for the government. Yoshida introduces Asa to Denji, who admits to being Chainsaw Man, but Asa does not believe him. Meanwhile, a mysterious impostor Chainsaw Man stalks the streets, killing Asa's friend Yuko. After surviving a trap set for them by the Famine Devil, Fami, at an aquarium, Yoru tries to transform Denji into a weapon through Asa's body, but fails. As Asa feels rejected by different boys she trusted, the Falling Devil appears, trying to cook her into a meal. Denji, as Chainsaw Man, along with the impostor, appears and helps her escape, with Fami and Nayuta manipulating events in the background. Asa becomes attracted to Chainsaw Man after realizing he has saved her life multiple times. Fami wants Yoru to survive for the sake of changing the Prophecy of Nostradamus and protecting humanity from the appearance of Death Devil, but Nayuta is more concerned with childish things like wanting to attend school and eat snacks. During the aftermath of Falling Devil's attack, Denji, Nayuta and their dogs are captured by Yoshida's organization, as the supporters of Chainsaw Man form the Chainsaw Man Society for World Peace led by Haruka Iseumi of the Devil Hunter Club. Yoshida threatens to kill Nayuta if Denji ever transforms into Chainsaw Man again, since the conflict between the supporters and critics of Chainsaw Man is escalating. A conflicted Denji chooses to protect the normal life he has and decides to quit being Chainsaw Man. The Chainsaw Man Society for World Peace, who are revealed to be working for Fami, reveals a mysterious character as the Chainsaw Man, much to the dismay of Denji. Fami reveals that Yoru's goal of killing Chainsaw Man and Asa's desire to save him are both achievable, as there are two entities known as Chainsaw Man- the "red" one that is Denji and the object of Asa's affections, and the former form of Pochita, the "black" one, that has consumed the Nuclear Weapons Devil and is the object of Yoru's revenge. Meanwhile, Denji encounters Miri Sugo, the Longsword hybrid who had previously fought Denji while Pochita was controlling his body. Miri attempts to convince Denji to join the Chainsaw Man Church, but fails. Later, when the Church attempts an attack on the public, they are intercepted by Quanxi and Katana Man, the Bow and Katana hybrids whom Denji had also previously fought. However, Barem Bridge, the Flamethrower hybrid and another member of the Church, reveals that the members of the Chainsaw Man Church had been mass-contracted with the Fire Devil, allowing them to become Devils in the likeness of Chainsaw Man; this would cause a war that would greatly increase public fear of both Chainsaw Man and Yoru, strengthening them enough to fight the Death Devil. Quanxi saves Denji, Nayuta, and fellow student Fumiko Mifune from the Church, taking them to Public Safety Officials who states that the Devils can be killed via cremation. Asa and Yoru, meanwhile, are confronted by Yoshida who is leading a raid to kill the War Devil. Yoshida hesitates in killing her, allowing for Asa and Yoru to escape. At the same time, Asa and Yoru learn that due to the increasing fear of wars, their power has now increased and they can now make weapons without coming in physical contact with the object. Meanwhile, Denji attempts to return to his normal life, but Barem, who had escaped Public Safety, burns down his apartment, incinerating Nayuta's pet dogs and Power's cat in the process. Shattered, Denji transforms into Chainsaw Man, and attacks Barem and Miri. Nayuta apparently sacrifices herself to save Denji, who is taken by Yoshida and Fumiko. With no use left for Denji, Public Safety imprisons him at the Tokyo Devil Detention center, and uses his body for amputations. A week later, Asa, Yoru, and Fami free Denji from the Devil Detention Center, and are joined by Haruka, Seigi Akoku and Nobana Higashiyama, the Church's followers who are now being treated as international terrorists, as well as Katana Man and the Nail Fiend. Denji joins the group on the condition that the group shall first attempt to find Nayuta, who has gone missing. Later, at a restaurant, the group encounters Barem, who shows Denji what appears to be Nayuta's severed head. With Denji now sufficiently broken, Pochita takes over his body once more. As Pochita goes on a rampage, he consumes several Devils, erasing their concepts from the world. With the help of the newly introduced Aging Devil and Yoshida's abilities, Public Safety confirms that they can restore erased concepts by making Chainsaw Man vomit the Devils that he ate. Public Safety, along with the Japanese Government, decides to go into a contract with the Aging Devil where in exchange for killing 10,000 children, the Aging Devil would voluntarily let itself be consumed by Chainsaw Man, erasing the concept of Aging. Pochita then erases the concepts of Snow, Octopus, Bitterness, and Mouth by eating their respective Devils. Yoru, Katana Man, and the Aging Devil attack Pochita, but are defeated and lose their arms. Yoru then turns her "children", the Tank and Gun Devils, into weapons. Pochita retreats in search of blood to heal himself. She has a habit of entering relationships due to her loneliness and desire for companionship, despite her fear of making connections only to be left alone because of her mistakes. ### Episode 1: Dog & Chainsaw Denji dreams of being in a back alley, where he finds a door and reaches for it. He then wakes up and decides to go to work for the Yakuza. On his way, he calculates how much money he got from cutting trees and selling his kidney, right eye, and one of his testicles, however, he still owes a lot more money. Pochita barks and Denji realizes that there is a devil nearby, which excites him as he earns a good sum for a dead devil. He sees the Tomato Devil and, using Pochita as a chainsaw, manages to kill it. The old man that hired him explains that he will pay him 400,000 yen, more than Denji expects, but after taking various fees and interest, he gives Denji only 70,000 yen. After paying his bill and for other things he owes, Denji ends up with only 1,800 yen. The old man's driver wonders why he would hire someone like Denji. The old man explains that Denji is paying them back what his father owned them. The real devil hunters won't give them the devil carcass and Denji is also doing what he is told. The driver offers 100 yen to Denji if he eats his cigarette and Denji gladly accepts. After they leave, Denji spits out the cigarette. While eating bread at his place, Denji tells Pochita that he heard people put jam on it, but that's just a dream for them. He guesses he will die before he repays the debt and probably won't even get a girlfriend and recalls standing in front of his father's grave with the old man complaining that his father killed himself before paying his debt and tells Denji to gather 700,000 yen by tomorrow or he will chop him to pieces. As the old man leaves, Denji sees a devil with a chainsaw and as he feels dead already, he is fine being killed by it. However, he then sees the devil is bleeding and offers to bite him and drink his blood. As Pochita bites him, Denji states that Pochita needs to pay him back and help him as well. The next day, Denji kills the Marshmallow Devil and gives it to the old man, asking him to hire him as a devil hunter. Being too hungry, Denji is unable to sleep. He tells Pochita that he dreams of having bread with jam, flirting with a girl, playing games with her and then falling asleep while they hug each other. Denji then coughs blood and tells Pochita that he heard his mother had a heart disease that made her cough blood. The old man then comes and picks Denji, as he found some devil hunting work for him. The man takes him to an abandoned factory and they enter, but Denji is unable to see any devil. The man tells Denji that he is grateful to him as he is loyal as a dog and works for cheap, however he can't stand the dog stench. In that moment, a man with a sword stabs Denji and Pochita from behind. The man explains that even yakuza dream of getting bigger and make more money, so they made a deal with a devil. They wanted power, and the devil wanted dead devil hunters. Zombie Devil then reveals itself and states that the yakuza are dumb and for a bit of power, they chose to become his slaves as his power turns them into zombies. The Zombie Devil doesn't like devil hunters as they kill other devils, and orders his new zombie army to kill Denji. Heavily bleeding, Denji attempts to run, but the zombies catch up to him and start stabbing and chopping him to pieces. Cut to pieces, Denji is thrown into a dumper with Pochita. Some of his blood reaches Pochita's mouth and Pochita awakens. Pochita recalls spending time with Denji cutting trees. Denji tells him that he might die while fighting a devil and one of his regrets would be that he would leave Pochita alone and starving, or that other devil hunters might kill him, and that he once heard that some devils can take over dead bodies, then tells Pochita to have his body if it’s something he can do, so Denji can live a normal life and die a normal death. In the dumpster, Pochita fuses with Denji, combining his chopped pieces and healing him. Denji awakens and wonders if Pochita took over his dead body. Pochita states he loved hearing Denji talk about his dreams. Pochita decides to give him his heart and in exchange, he wants Denji to show him his dreams. Denji awakens healed in the dumpster, and sees Pochita's tail coming out of his chest. The Zombie Devil is surprised to see Denji alive and tells the zombies to eat him. Denji wonders if he is the same as the yakuza and wasn't satisfied with the happiness he had with Pochita, but kept dreaming for more. He thinks that in that case, he couldn’t blame them, but if they were in his way, they would die. Denji then pulls the cord from his chest as the zombies jump on him. Moments later, he bursts out from the zombie pile transformed, his arms and head having become chainsaws. After chopping some zombies, Denji jumps on the Zombie Devil and starts cutting him. The Zombie Devil manages to push him back and throw zombies at him to keep him away. Continuing to cut down the zombies, Denji jumps on the Zombie Devil and slices him in half. Seeing the remaining zombies, Denji notes they became devils, and they hired him to kill devils. He proceeds to cut them all, stating that once he does, he won't owe them any money. Early in the morning, a car stops in front of the abandoned factory. Makima and two men then enter and see the bloodbath inside. She sees Denji and approaches him, stating he has a strange smell, neither human nor devil, guessing that he did all of this. Denji asks to be hugged and Makima hugs him. Denji returns to normal and Makima notes he is human and explains he isn't possessed. She also explains that she came to kill the Zombie Devil and that she is a devil hunter with Public Safety. She gives Denji two options, to get killed as a devil, or to be kept as a human. She states that if he decides to be kept by her, she promises to make sure he is fed. Denji asks what he would be given for breakfast if he agrees, the reply from Makima being ‘bread with butter and jam, salad, coffee, and maybe some dessert’. Denji finds that awesome and agrees. ### Episode 2: Arrival in Tokyo After being taken into custody by Makima, one of the Public Safety Devil Hunters, Denji develops strong feelings for her due to her suggestive comments. He arrives at the Devil Hunters Headquarters in Tokyo hoping to partner with her and is introduced to Aki Hayakawa, a senior hunter assigned to work with him. However, Aki beats Denji and tells him to quit the job. In the car with Makima, Denji's stomach growls, and she states he is under her care, expecting compliance like a dog. Initially viewing her as kind, Denji now finds her scary for treating him that way. Recalling Pochita causes another growl, prompting Makima to suggest stopping at a rest area for food, paying for him and giving him his coat since he is shirtless. Denji feels happy and believes he loves her for being nice. At the rest area, Denji orders udon and sausage, while Makima gets curry udon. Feeling anaemic from blood loss, Denji falls on her; she inquires about his condition, and he explains his pet devil replaced his heart. Makima notes few precedents exist, believes him due to his scent, and says his friend lives in him, giving off both human and devil smells. Denji excites but collapses again. Upon waking, their food is ready; Makima feeds him soggy udon, which he enjoys. He asks her name and preferred guy type; she reveals her name and says she likes "Denji" type. They reach Tokyo, and Denji confesses liking her; she directs him to headquarters, explaining over a thousand hunters including civilians, with Public Safety offering best benefits. Denji hopes to work together. Makima provides him an uniform, introduces Aki (who started three years ago), and assigns Denji to patrol with him. Denji refuses, wanting Makima; she says good performance might allow future teamwork and fixes his tie. On patrol, Denji asks about Makima's boyfriend; Aki ignores, then punches him in an alley, demanding he quit to avoid death, citing past coworkers who died for money. Aki guesses Denji's motive is Makima, which he confirms. Aki plans to tell her Denji fled; Denji counters by kicking Aki's groin, calling him nice for targeting weak spots. Denji explains he values his new life with food and humane treatment, responsible for more than himself. Aki attacks, saying punks like Denji shouldn't chase Makima; Denji kicks again, teasing Aki's interest. They report to Makima; Denji blames a "Nut Devil," but Aki denies. Makima assigns Denji to Aki's unit, revealing Denji can turn into a devil, offering special treatment but warning disposal if he resigns or refuses. Aki says he'll live with Denji to monitor him and can kill him if he runs. Denji questions if Makima is bad; Aki says give up if so, but she's good for saving him. At Aki's place, Denji makes a messy breakfast with jams, annoying Aki. On a mission against a Fiend, Aki explains Fiends as devils controlling corpses. In a room, Aki orders Denji to kill it by transforming; Denji beheads with an axe instead, saying transformation is messy and he wanted it painless. Aki criticizes sympathy, revealing his family died by a devil, urging seriousness. Denji says he'd befriend a kind devil as he has none; Aki leaves, noting he'll remember. Alone, Denji cleans blood from porn magazines, feeling his dream life is real but incomplete. He recalls old dreams, thinks of Makima, and sets new goal: to touch a woman's chest, realizing it's possible now. Makima assigns Denji a new partner, Power, a Fiend on Aki's team, rational but with horns. She warns of patrol rules and unit dissolution without results. Power slaps Denji, demanding prey as she's hungry for blood; he tolerates her for attraction but schemes for her chest. They meet policemen, introducing as Public Safety Devil Extermination Special Division 4 with ID. No devils appear; Power claims her presence scared them. Denji suspects Aki's setup to fire him. Power smells blood, jumps from building, forms a blood hammer, and smashes a Sea Cucumber Devil, creating a bloody mess while laughing maniacally. ### Episode 3: Meowy's Whereabouts Denji sets his new goal as fondling breasts. Power, the Blood Fiend, offers to let him touch hers if he rescues her pet cat Meowy from a devil. Motivated, Denji prepares to act. Makima scolds Power for killing the Sea Cucumber Devil, which obstructed a Civilian Hunter's business, risking Power's arrest. She advises Power to control her temper and Denji to manage her. Power lies that Denji forced her to kill it, but Denji calls her a liar, leading to an argument. Makima silences them and demands they work together; Power agrees. Denji buys a drink, a dream come true, but worries about future problems. Power explains she loves only cats and hates humans and devils; a devil kidnapped Meowy, and though Makima captured her before she could retrieve it, Power clings to hope and would endure anything for Meowy. She doubts Denji understands. Denji calls it stupid but relates to acting for a pet dog, stating his goal is breasts. Power proposes he touches hers if he helps get Meowy. Denji agrees, vowing as a devil hunter to kill the devil. They gain Public Safety approval to go out. Power knows the devil's location but says only Denji can fight, as it will use Meowy as a shield. Denji shares he once had a pet dog Pochita, now gone but "in his heart." Power calls this foolish self-comfort. Denji avoids arguing, thinking they'll never get along. In a timeskip, Makima meets higher-ups discussing devils in military use abroad but hoping Japan's enemies are only devils. They ask about her squad; she says one is promising, another interesting, but warn her not to get attached. Aki, in a car with Makima, calls Denji disgusting and questions her hopes. Makima explains devils gain power from feared names; e.g., Coffee Devil weak, Car Devil strong. Denji's Chainsaw Devil form interests her, despite his simple goal of living well and befriending devils. Power and Denji reach a house where the devil is. Power points it out. Denji hopes not to transform but Power thinks he's joking. Near the house, Power recalls the devil will use Meowy as a shield. She claims she misspoke about danger. Suddenly, she forms a blood hammer, knocks out Denji with it before he can axe her, noting his sharp instincts. Power drags Denji inside. The Bat Devil greets her, thinking she ran away. Power brings a human as demanded. The Bat Devil notes Denji's young blood is vigorous. Denji awakens, missing an arm from the fight, hides, and drinks human blood to heal from human wounds. He squeezes Denji, forcing blood vomit, drinks it, finds it disgusting, throws Denji away; his arm regenerates but tastes bad, so he wants another human. Power watches, calling humans foolish for believing her story. The Bat Devil plans to eat children to cleanse the taste, then virgins, a beefy man, a pregnant woman. Power demands Meowy back. The Bat Devil swallows Meowy. Power flashbacks to meeting Meowy in the wild: after killing a bear, she fed and cared for the starved cat, planning to eat it, but found its meowing soothing amid her violent life. The Bat Devil appeared, injured, demanded blood for Meowy's return. Now, seeing Meowy swallowed, Power tells Denji she understands losing Pochita like he can't pet him anymore—it's awful. The Bat Devil swallows Power too, finding her taste bad. Denji clings to the Bat Devil's leg, sucking blood, demanding his "breasts back." The devil captures him. Denji flashbacks to losing Pochita, searching in fear a devil ate him, then finding Pochita crying and sleeping relieved in his arms. He wonders what Power felt knowing Meowy was captive. Pulling his cord, chainsaws emerge; he cuts the devil's arms, freeing himself. The Bat Devil is surprised Denji is a devil. They fall into a building. Denji tells a woman to run. The Bat Devil questions why, as a devil. Denji punches and fights. He sees humans, tells them to run. The Bat Devil throws a car with a human at Denji. Denji grabs and throws it back, hitting the devil's face, uncaring if he saves the man. The Bat Devil blasts a shockwave, blowing Denji away. It picks up the human to eat and heal, but hears chainsaws in smoke, wondering how Denji lives. Angry, Denji says he's waited but couldn't cop a feel. The Bat Devil fears, throws debris; Denji deflects with chainsaws. The devil punches; Denji cuts its arm and disembowels it, killing the Bat Devil. ### Episode 4: Rescue After a fierce battle, Denji defeats the Bat Devil and rescues Power, despite her attempt to trap and kill him. He explains his motivation is to touch her boobs, which Power mocks as a dumb reason but agrees to allow since Meowy is safe. As Denji gets excited and raises his arm, it is suddenly severed by the Leech Devil, who then eats it. Power, unable to move, urges Denji to flee with Meowy. Denji's chainsaw is weak due to low blood, and the Leech Devil taunts him, revealing she spared him because she finds him cute but intends to kill Power and Meowy. Denji fights back, dodging attacks and landing a punch, but the Leech Devil overpowers him, mocking his weakness and sharing a dream of devils killing humans. Denji refuses to die before fulfilling his goal and cuts her neck with his head chainsaw. Angered by mockery of his dream, he wraps her with Bat Devil intestines, fights wildly, but is pierced in the chest by her tongue. Aki arrives, summoning the Fox Devil via his contract with Kon, which eats the Leech Devil's head. Aki confirms the extermination, orders searches for other devils, and assigns Himeno to watch. In the hospital, Aki explains to Denji that his arm was reattached via blood infusion. He details devil hunter contracts: offering body parts for devil power, like skin for the Fox Devil. Aki found them via surveillance leading to the Bat Devil's house, covered for Denji by forgetting the incident if Denji agrees to continue his lifestyle without reports leading to Power's disposal. Denji agrees while eating apples. Power waits outside with Himeno. Aki releases her, noting devil hunters use fiends against enemies. Aki reports to Makima: Denji and Power eliminated the Bat Devil, fought the Leech Devil (exterminated by Division 4), with no Gun Devil flesh found. Makima accepts, noting Aki's flexibility possibly from Denji's influence, which he denies. Aki and Denji live together: Aki does chores and cooks curry. Power bursts in, clogs the toilet (refusing to flush), throws away veggies she dislikes, and scolds them for being delicate. She fulfills her promise, allowing Denji three squeezes on her chest for saving Meowy, killing the Bat Devil, and protecting her from Aki. Denji sees her as an angel. ### Episode 5: Gun Devil Aki Hayakawa, Denji, and Power start living together. Denji finally fulfills his dream of touching Power's boobs, but is shocked when things do not turn out the way he expected. As Denji realizes that chasing his dream was more fun than achieving it, Makima approaches him and says, "If you can kill the Gun Devil, I'll grant you one wish." The next day, Denji lacks appetite and patrols with Power but is unmotivated and distracted. At the office, he signs documents under Makima's supervision, who notices his low mood. Denji explains that achieving his dream of touching a woman's breast didn't feel as good as he anticipated, and he wonders if the process of pursuing desires is more enjoyable than fulfilling them. Makima takes his hand, discusses how familiarity enhances physical sensations, examines his hand's details, bites his finger to imprint the feeling, and places his hand on her chest. Denji panics and falls back. Makima then requests that Denji defeat the Gun Devil, promising to grant him one wish if successful. She describes the Gun Devil as a powerful entity that emerged 13 years ago in America during a terrorist attack, killing 1.2 million people in five minutes, causing increased fear of guns and devils, leading to laws restricting guns and related news. Flashbacks show young Aki and his brother Taiyo playing in the snow before their house is destroyed by the Gun Devil. Makima explains that pieces of the Gun Devil's flesh, found in bullets or devils like the Fish Devil (which Aki kills to obtain one), can reassemble into the original body. Aki finds another piece. Public Safety assigns a mission to investigate a devil in Hotel Morin, where civilian hunters died, possibly after consuming a Gun Devil piece. A team including Denji, Power, Aki, Himeno, Kobeni, and Hirokazu is deployed. Aki confirms the piece reacts to the hotel. Denji suspects it might be the Gun Devil, but Aki rules it out. Hirokazu distrusts Denji and Power, but Aki states they will engage first. The team recalls a morning prank on Aki. Himeno offers a cheek kiss to the killer, motivating Denji, but he declines, citing Makima's advice on familiarity, and states he will kiss someone else. Himeno counters with a promise of a French kiss if Denji kills the devil. Hirokazu argues with Denji over this. Himeno notes Kobeni's strength despite lack of bravery and Hirokazu's motivation despite weakness, predicting most newbies die or quit. Flashback to Himeno introducing Aki as her new teammate at a graveyard, warning him not to die like previous ones, after her injury. Inside the hotel, Himeno senses the devil approaching using her Ghost Devil contract (exchanged for her right eye), which stops a headless, limbless entity mid-air. Power slices it in half with a blood sword, boasting it froze in fear, but Himeno clarifies it was her power. Not the Gun Devil piece bearer, they proceed. Power questions revealing her ability, but Himeno says she has an ace in reserve and demonstrates by grabbing Power with the Ghost Devil. They find a blood splatter matching a previous floor's, realizing they are still on the eighth floor, and Hirokazu is seen descending from above. ###Episode 6: Kill Denji### Stuck on the Morin hotel's eighth floor, Denji and the group are forced to devise a plan to stop the Devil that's causing the time warp. They get an answer when the Devil speaks to them, asking for Denji's life in exchange for freedom. The group struggles to escape, realizing it's a devil's trick. Denji initially blames Power for killing a devil that may have sealed them, but Aki explains the power persists post-death. Himeno notes it's a unique devil ability. Kobeni panics, crying about her forced career choice for her family's sake, while Power mocks her. Aki deduces no rescue will come. They adapt by using working water and electricity, scavenging abandoned food. Hirokazu locks himself in fear, Kobeni descends into madness until knocked out by Himeno. Power daydreams about winning a Nobel Prize, becoming Prime Minister, and raising consumption tax to 100%. Denji reassures a tense Himeno. Flashbacks show Himeno teaching Aki to smoke, his denial of habits due to short lifespans, and his vendetta against the Gun Devil. Himeno shares past grievances from grieving families targeting hunters. Aki retaliates against a woman slapping Himeno by putting gum in her hair, advising her to fight back. Himeno gives Aki a cigarette, but he limits himself to one. Aki reports the dead devil growing larger. The Eternity Devil appears as a fleshy blob blocking the hallway, demanding Denji (dead or alive) for a contract to free the others. Kobeni attacks Denji with a knife, but Aki disarms her and Himeno knocks her out. Aki tries summoning the Fox Devil but fails, confirming isolation. Himeno attacks with the Ghost Devil, causing pain but making the devil larger, revealing it's only its stomach, not the real body. The devil reiterates the contract. Denji suspects betrayal, but Himeno explains contracts bind both parties until broken. Hirokazu suggests killing Denji, but Aki refuses, noting benefit to the devil. Power agrees for her escape, but Aki states fiends can't contract. The devil grows, chases them, claiming fear expands it and only it can kill Chainsaw Man. The floor tilts 90 degrees. Hirokazu and Kobeni urge killing Denji. Aki prepares his sword, but Himeno stops him with the Ghost Devil, explaining it would invoke his life-shortening contract. Hirokazu attacks Denji, Kobeni tries stabbing, but Aki shields him, getting stabbed. Aki reveals he needs Denji to fight the Gun Devil, accepting shorter life for allies. Power can't easily control Aki's blood but notes his cooking value. Himeno panics. Kobeni blames Denji. Denji relents, agreeing to let the devil eat him but vowing to fight and kill it, reminding Himeno of her kiss promise. He deduces the devil fears Chainsaw Man. Annoyed by Aki's sacrifice, Denji vows reciprocity. He pulls his cord and jumps to face the Eternity Devil. ###Episode 7: The Taste of a Kiss### There needs to be a sacrifice, and Denji is going to be the one to make it. In a surprising turn of events, the Eternity Devil seems to know who Denji is. In the hotel where they are trapped by the Eternity Devil, Aki Hayakawa is stabbed by Kobeni Higashiyama while protecting Denji. Witnessing this, Denji activates his chainsaw powers, jumps into the devil's domain, and begins slashing at it indiscriminately. The Eternity Devil taunts Denji, explaining that cutting it is futile since its heart is elsewhere, and mocks the weakening of his chainsaw due to blood loss. As Denji's chainsaw arms retract from hemorrhage, he bites and drinks the devil's blood, finding even its foul-tasting essence satisfying amid the creature's pain. Power warns Denji that continued blood loss will cause his powers to fail. Himeno observes Denji's frenzied assault and recalls a conversation with Kishibe at Sahara's grave. Kishibe explains that devils fear devil hunters who are unhinged, as sane individuals like Sahara, Kinochi, Subaru, and Sasaki succumb to fear, which empowers the devils. He questions Aki's sanity, but Himeno notes that no sane person would attempt to kill the Gun Devil. Later, Himeno proposes to Aki that they become civilian devil hunters for a stable lifestyle, but Aki declines, preferring to continue their current arrangement. Himeno warns that Aki, being composed and normal, will die fighting the Gun Devil. The Eternity Devil overpowers Denji temporarily, but Himeno uses the Ghost Devil's arm to pull him back into the fight. Denji, inspired, realizes that repeatedly cutting and consuming the devil's blood could create a perpetual motion machine for his survival. Himeno, seeing his madness, believes he might stand a chance against the Gun Devil. Three days later, after an prolonged battle, the Eternity Devil reveals its heart as its weakness and begs Denji to end its suffering. Surprised the fight is over, Denji slices the heart and kills it. The group exits the hotel, with Denji carrying a piece of the Gun Devil. Exhausted, he collapses but is caught by Himeno, who notes he has fallen asleep. They decide to take Aki and Denji to the hospital, while Kobeni and Hirokazu report to their sector. Afterward, Himeno suggests a welcome party for Division 4 to foster bonding and address Kobeni and Hirokazu's desire to leave, given their regret over attempting to kill Denji and their fear of devils. Aki insists it happen that week to include Makima before her work trip. Himeno ponders Denji's nature, as the devil seemed to know something about him, and questions why Makima remains in Tokyo and cares so much for Denji, suspecting she knows his secret. Division 4 gathers for drinks. Aki notes Fushi's absence due to his fiend's irrationality, unlike Power's. Kobeni arrives late, and Makima is delayed. Denji, reminded of his promised kiss from Himeno, awaits it as she drinks more. Newbies introduce themselves: Denji (16, loves eating and sleeping), Hirokazu (22, Fox Devil contract, writes haikus), Kobeni (20, secret contract, likes tasty food). Fushi reveals his newbie died the previous day, explaining the high mortality rate for civilians handling devils, with cases escalating to Public Safety. Himeno jokes that Denji won't die while awaiting her kiss, noting she has kissed all except newbies, including them eventually. Denji excites at the guarantee. Makima arrives and overhears Denji's kiss anticipation, prompting denial. Himeno teases, but Denji affirms his desire, torn between wanting her French kiss and avoiding Makima's gaze. He shifts topics to the Gun Devil piece he found, but Makima already knows. Aki mentions increasing Gun Devil hybrids targeting Denji and questions if Makima knows something about him. Makima offers to reveal it if Aki outdrinks her. Himeno joins, and the three compete in chugging beer. Power attributes her restraint to her high IQ (initially 100, inflated to 500 or 1000 amid banter). Himeno then kisses Denji, exciting him until she vomits into his mouth, which he swallows per his habit of consuming anything nutritious. The group laughs; Power comments on Denji's swallowing tendency. Denji, vomiting in the bathroom, reflects on his impoverished youth scavenging trash and eating anything, even rats consuming vomit. Hirokazu assists Denji, sharing his envy of Denji's devil hunter talents, as his mother drinks daily post-work, and he lacks similar skills. Denji encourages him, noting his first kiss involved vomit and nothing to envy. Post-meeting, Himeno carries drunk Denji home. He awakens at night thirsty; she mouth-feeds him beer. Himeno muses on Denji's feelings for Makima, annoyed that he and Aki like her. She lies beside him, suggesting they "do it." ###Episode 8: Gunfire### Denji experiences his first, yet devastating, kiss. An intoxicated Denji is taken to Himeno's house, where she starts seducing him. Feeling torn between Makima, whom he admires, and Himeno, who is standing in front of him. Denji refuses Himeno's sexual advances, remembering the night before when Makima gave him an indirect kiss through a lollipop. The next morning, Himeno forgets everything due to her being drunk and asks to become friends with Denji. Denji agrees to help Himeno get together with Aki if she can help him with Makima. Meanwhile, the Gun Devil has coordinated an attack to exterminate the Tokyo Public Safety Devil Hunters, as they are narrowing in on his location. As civilians throughout Tokyo use illegally obtained guns to kill Devil Hunters, Makima is shot while en route to Kyoto. At a cafe, Denji is shot in the head by the grandson of the yakuza handler he killed earlier in the series, while Himeno is shot in the chest. Aki tries to have the Fox Devil eat the man, but the man reveals himself as a devil-human Hybrid with the Katana Devil. Aki defeats the man, Samurai Sword, with the Curse Devil's powers but loses to him after his partner, Akane Sawatari, helps him up. A dying Himeno gives up her body to the Ghost Devil, who manifests in plain sight and overwhelms Samurai Sword. Akane uses the Snake Devil to consume most of the Ghost Devil, seemingly killing it and saving Samurai Sword, while Himeno has disappeared entirely. ###Episode 9: From Kyoto### A fierce battle unfolds between Denji and the menacing Samurai Sword. After seemingly being killed, Makima turns out to be alive. She sets out to rescue Denji with the help of Public Safety Devil Hunters from Kyoto, Kurose and Tendo. In this episode, a fierce battle erupts between Denji and Katana Man (also known as Samurai Sword). Denji, transforming into Chainsaw Man after his cord is pulled by the Ghost Devil, engages Katana Man in combat on the third floor of the west Narima building. Akane Sawatari uses the Snake Devil to eliminate the Ghost Devil, and Katana Man orders his men to shoot at Denji's arms or heart. Denji overpowers two reinforcements but is shot by one; he then takes a man hostage to deter Katana Man. However, Katana Man swiftly slashes both Denji and his hostage in half, capturing Denji and noting that his Devil Hunter allies are likely dead against guns. Meanwhile, Makima appears to be killed when she, Hirokazu Arai, Fushi, and other Division 4 members are shot on a train to Kyoto. Yet, Makima revives and meets Public Safety Devil Hunters from Kyoto, Yutaro Kurose and Michiko Tendo, at the station. She explains she survived gunfire and that the attackers inside the train are dead. Makima learns of the ambush on Special Divisions 1 through 4 in Tokyo and deduces the enemy targets Denji. Deciding to handle the situation remotely, she requests Kurose borrow 30 convicts serving life sentences or worse, and has Tendo rent a high-altitude shrine while obtaining clean clothes. At the shrine, Makima blindfolds the convicts, Kurose, and Tendo, revealing her direct reporting line to the Chief Cabinet Secretary. She uses hand signs to contract devils by having convicts repeat names like "Shuzo Mishima" and "Takashi Inoue," remotely crushing corresponding enemies under Katana Man's group to death one by one. Panicking, the enemies flee, but Makima kills them all except Katana Man and Akane, leaving the convicts dead as well. She then heads back to Tokyo. Katana Man, weakened and carrying Denji, senses something amiss as crows appear. His comrades are crushed, and Akane confirms Makima's survival. Kobeni Higashiyama arrives, mistaking an elderly woman shooter for the culprit after Hirokazu Arai is killed protecting her. Kobeni summons the Snake Devil's tail (sacrificing a nail), dodges, and attacks on the devil's body, cutting off Katana Man's arm with a knife and shooting him in the back. She grabs Denji as a shield, apologizes for past attempts on his life, and breaks down over Hirokazu's death, vowing to quit upon meeting Himeno. Makima, Kurose, and Tendo arrive in Tokyo and meet Madoka at the station. Madoka reports massive casualties in the special divisions, with all four merging into Tokyo Special Division 4 under Makima's control. He resigns, citing the sinister turn of events, and questions her foresight, which she declines to discuss. Kurose and Tendo serve as temporary advisors before returning to Kyoto. ###Episode 10: Bruised & Battered### Samurai Sword's vicious attack resulted in many lost personnel for Public Safety Devil Extermination Division 4. Meanwhile, Makima introduces Denji and Power to a member of Public Safety to act as their mentor to strengthen Division. Aki Hayakawa wakes up in a hospital bed after Katana Man's attack decimates Division 4, struggling to accept the loss of Himeno. Denji and Power visit him, arguing over an apple before Denji reveals Kobeni survived and Madoka quit. Makima assigns Denji and Power a new mentor to bolster the division, while Aki, consulting the Curse Devil, learns he has two years left and breaks down crying over Himeno's death. Denji, reflecting on his own losses like Pochita, questions his emotional detachment but dismisses deeper thoughts. Makima introduces Denji and Power to Kishibe, Himeno's former master and a top Division 1 Devil Hunter, for intense training to counter threats targeting Denji, including the Gun Devil's interest in his heart. Kishibe tests them by snapping their necks, explaining recovery via blood, and declares his intent to forge them into the strongest devils by defeating him repeatedly. He overwhelms them in combat, stabbing Denji and slashing Power's throat, while noting their immortality and semi-immortality. At the hospital, advisors Michiko Tendo and Yutaro Kurose, assigned by Makima, coach Aki on his career, warning of his limited Curse Devil summons and suggesting a stronger contract. Aki refuses to quit, vowing to hunt the devil responsible for his family's and friends' deaths. They depart, leaving Himeno's sister with letters from Himeno, who pondered ways to make Aki quit. Kishibe leaves Denji and Power battered, planning further sessions. The duo, frustrated, plots to outsmart him using intellect rather than brute force, inspired by manga tropes. The next day, they attempt a "smart" ambush with blood spears and an axe, but Kishibe evades and counters effortlessly, critiquing their strategy and knocking Denji out with a knife. Michiko and Yutaro escort Aki to a facility housing captured devils, explaining brutal contract terms. They reach Cell 108, home to the Future Devil, which has claimed half a lifespan or senses from prior contractors. Aki enters to face it, marking its debut. ###Episode 11: Mission Start### Aki Hayakawa meets the Future Devil and asks him what he'd like to trade in exchange for his abilities. The Future Devil tells Hayakawa if he lets him reside in his right eye, he'll let him use his powers. Denji and Power finish their training with Kishibe, who beats them and informs them that live combat training begins as they prepare to attack Akane Sawatari and Katana Man. Everyone in the new Division 4 will participate, but failure means the division's dissolution and Denji and Power's disposal by Kishibe. Denji vows to spare Kishibe's life if that happens, acknowledging his growth. Aki Hayakawa enters the Future Devil's cell, where the devil demands he say "The future rules!" but Aki ignores it to form a contract. The Future Devil wants to see Aki's future first and has him stick his head into its gut. After laughing, it agrees to live in Aki's right eye, granting its power, warning of Aki's horrible death, which Aki refuses to hear. Kishibe meets Makima, expressing fatigue from training "dogs" that die, hoping Denji and Power won't. He questions if she knew about the attack on the divisions and states he doesn't care about her plans as long as they serve mankind. Makima explains her goal to save people from devils, noting a successful operation will make Division 4's existence public for more freedom and lives saved. Kishibe calls her a liar. Katana Man and Akane Sawatari hide with others. Akane warns there's no escape from Makima, explaining Katana Man can be revived but others must avoid bites. Katana Man reveals a secret weapon from his grandfather and an army of zombies below from unpaid debts. Yutaro Kurose questions Aki's plan to defeat the Gun Devil, sharing his own grudge but deeming it impossible. He tosses a drink at Aki, admitting he roots for him but warns of the Special Division's craziness. Makima meets the yakuza boss, who denies ordering fights but implicates Akane in Gun Devil deals. He explains trades of 20,000 yen for guns. Makima demands names of all with Gun Devil contracts across families. He refuses, citing war among families and their role as a "necessary evil" against foreign mafia. Makima shows a bag of eyes from relatives of men in the room, offering restoration if he cooperates. A man attempts to attack her but collapses from nosebleed and fear; she condemns his excuses. The Special Division and police surround the hideout. Kishibe states no plan—just entry. Aki, Denji, Power, and Kobeni enter, while police and Division 2 seal entrances. Kishibe introduces members: Beam, the Shark Fiend who swims through surfaces and transforms his head; Galgali, the Violence Fiend in a poison-gas mask, strong despite weakening as a fiend; Princi, the Spider Devil often in human form, friendly but deadly; and Angel Devil, who drains lifespan on contact, eats a zombie head, and borrows a handkerchief from Aki. They split up: Fiends handle zombies, while Aki, Denji, Power, and Kobeni target Katana Man and Akane. Aki ascends to the fourth floor, knocking out shooters who collapse from nosebleeds. He finds Akane, ordering her to come quietly, but she summons the Snake Devil to spit and the Ghost Devil to kill. Aki uses the Future Devil's power to foresee and cut its arms but gets grabbed by the neck as it chokes him. ###Episode 12: Katana vs. Chainsaw### Denji, Makima, and the rest are taking down the rogue Yakuza who made a deal with the Gun Devil. Akane Sawatari deploys the Ghost Devil to attack Aki Hayakawa, nearly killing him. The Ghost Devil pauses, hands Aki a cigarette with the message "easy revenge," and releases him. Drawing strength from a flashback to Himeno offering him a cigarette and noting his minor status, Aki recalls that the Ghost Devil perceives only fear due to lacking eyes. He climbs onto the Devil, vows to join Himeno soon, and beheads it. Akane is shocked, but Kobeni Higashiyama holds a knife to her throat. Aki stops Kobeni from killing her and questions why Kobeni remains in Public Safety; Kobeni explains it's for upcoming bonus payments. Meanwhile, Denji and Power ride an elevator, where Power eats a zombie's arm, insisting meat is meat regardless of source. Denji finds it gross and warns against eating Katana Man. At the seventh floor, zombies block their path; Power loudly announces herself and fights them alone, assuming Denji covers her, while he stays behind as doors close. Denji reaches the thirteenth floor and confronts Katana Man and his men. Katana Man offers surrender based on Denji's attitude, revealing Denji killed his grandfather and friends, demanding payment. Denji explains they became zombies, but Katana Man doubts it, noting even zombies were human, and questions Denji's guilt, which Denji denies. Katana Man discloses Akane replaced his heart with the Katana Devil, causing sleeplessness after killing a zombie; he accuses Denji of losing his human heart and offers a deal for death if conscience remains. Denji refuses, prompting Katana Man to attack. They battle across rooftops, crashing onto a train. Katana Man notes Denji's speed and asks his motive; Denji says to protect his current life. Fighting inside the stopped train, Katana Man assumes a stance, cutting Denji's arms despite his pleas. He demands apology for his grandfather before death. Denji rushes with his head chainsaw; they exchange blows until it breaks. Katana Man repeats the demand, but Denji reveals he turned his right leg into a chainsaw, splitting Katana Man in two. As Katana Man falls, Denji warns that beasts shouldn't trust hunters. ___ ### Denji (Chainsaw Man) Denji is the protagonist, a poor teenage orphan who becomes a Devil Hunter after merging with Pochita.
