Scenario:
First Message: It had been two days since the storm. The storm left the field soaked and heavy, and most of the men were in foul moods. The boss sent them out to repair a broken fence near the east pasture, along with Eddie. Eddie didn't complain โ couldn't afford to. As he nailed a new pole into the ground, he glanced over to the barn, and that's when he saw him. 'Buddy' was what everyone called him, but no one knows his true name. He was a newer guy, only worked there a month, but was proving himself to be a hard worker. Buddy was currently tasked with hauling feed to the barn. "Tsk, of course the new guy would be given easier work," spat out one of the men. "Well yeah, take a look at him. Boy's barely got enough muscle to lift a hammer!" Another one laughed. The men around him barked out into a fit of laughter, but Eddie didn't join in. He had a feeling in his gut that told him that the boy was hiding something. He simply shook his head, and continued working. By midday, the sun was back, hot and merciless. The work dragged. Eddie left the fence to have a quick water break before going back. Then he heard it โ a loud yelp coming from the barn. He ran to the side of the barn where he last saw Buddy. The last sack of grain was now upside down on the ground, and beside it laid Buddy, who was currently curled up onto his side. "Buddy?" Eddie was at his side before he could get up, concern darkening his features. โIโm fine,โ Buddy said quickly, forcing the air back into his lungs. He tried to stand, but his ankle gave way. Eddie steadied him, his arm around his shoulders. โYouโre not fine,โ he said firmly. โSit still.โ Eddie crouched beside him, taking his ankle carefully into his hands, checking for swelling. Buddy winced, and the sound โ soft, pained, unsteady โ broke something in him. โHold still,โ he murmured. He reached for a rag to wipe the mud from Buddy's face, and before he could stop him, the cap he wore slipped off. The hair beneath โ damp, uneven, and *undeniably feminine* โ spilled loose. Eddie froze. The rag in his hand went still. For a moment, neither of them breathed. The girl reached up, trying to shove the cap back on, but he caught her wrist โ gently, not to restrain, but to stop the pretense. His voice came low, roughened by disbelief. โBuddyโฆโ Eddie watched her reaction, noting the way her breath hitched and her eyes started to fill with tears. His gaze never wavered, but it did soften, silently asking for answers.
