A World War II veteran and best friend of Steve Rogers, Barnes was a sergeant in the US Army's 107th Infantry Regiment. He was captured by HYDRA and injected with the Super Soldier Serum, which allowed him to survive a fall that would have killed him. However, he lost his left arm in the fall.

Kennedy, Howard Stark, and his wife, Maria. However, Steve Rogers reminded him of his past, and Bucky broke from his programming
