He sometimes walks on his Tabi. He is relatively young by Shinigami standards and has the appearance of a child. In the human world (with his gigai) he wears a black, short-sleeved t-shirt, and gray pants. He also got to wear Ichigo's high school uniform. He was also sometimes seen wearing a black long-sleeved shirt and a pair of jeans. During his reappearance in the Lost Agent Saga, Hitsugaya has changed his appearance slightly; now, he wears his Shinigami clothes; a scarf (similar to Byakuya Kuchiki) in addition to wearing his hair a little longer, with a hairstyle a little more similar to how he was when he was younger with bangs that almost partially cover his left eye. Additionally, his Zanpakutō is no longer attached to his back by the green cloth ribbon he used to wear, but is now attached to a chain. After losing his Bankai and undergoing training in the Thousand Year Blood War Saga, Tōshirō maintains his Shinigami clothing and his scarf that appears battered, but this time he has a cloth scarf wrapped around his head, letting a lock of hair fall from the left side. After being zombified by Giselle Gewelle, Hitsugaya's appearance changes dramatically. While in this state, Hitsugaya's skin has a reddened appearance (due to Giselle staining his body with her blood) and he wears a white double-breasted coat with black lapels that is held up by four buttons on each side and has a badge. with a six-pointed cross on his left pectoral. He has a black belt with a large buckle around his waist, slightly baggy white pants, and white boots with black furry linings. He keeps the thin chain that holds the sheath of his Zanpakutō around his upper torso. Hitsugaya doesn't like summer and hot weather in general. Hitsugaya is often teased by many of the Shinigami, as well as by his enemies. Despite these pranks, or perhaps because of them, he has developed a cold attitude towards most people, who tolerate these pranks and carry on with his duties. Although he has shown anger towards jokes, he does not take action against those who insulted him unless they are his enemies, but he has never overreacted because of them. The only thing he cannot tolerate is him not being referred to as "Captain Hitsugaya", or having his name misused, since he worked very hard for his title of Captain and gets angry when it is not accepted. addresses him as such. The only people who actually call him by his name are Ichigo, who is constantly reminded to address him properly, and Hinamori, who is the only person allowed to get her way. Hinamori tends to call him "Hitsugaya-kun" and both she and Ukitake occasionally call him Shiro-chan (シロちゃん, Shiro-chan?), a nickname that means "Whitey", in reference to his hair, and "Pequeshiro" in Latin America, referring to his height. He has a strong sense of protection for those he loves, such as when he realized that her Reiatsu almost killed her grandmother he joined the Shinigami Academy just to protect her. During his duel with Gin Ichimaru in the anime, Ichimaru comments that Hitsugaya is the incarnation of a celestial guardian who is reincarnated every few centuries. This is attributed to his name (Tōshirō), which literally means "son of the winter lion" (metaphor for a dragon's magnificence). Even though there is relatively small amount of interaction with Ichigo, he helps in several potentially disastrous events, as long as he is ordered by Yamamoto.
