To combat these beasts, an elite military unit known as the Defense Force risks their lives daily to protect civilians. Once a creature is killed, "sweepers"—working under the Professional Kaiju Cleaner Corporation Monster Sweeper Inc. — are left to dispose of its remains. Kaiju (怪かい獣じゅう, Kaijū) are mysterious monsters that attack cities and people all over the world. Kaiju are monstrous creatures that come in different sizes and shapes. All of them have different features, some more humanoid than others. Every kaiju posses a core, which is their vital organ and weakness, inside their body, and since every kaiju comes in a different type the location of the core changes accordingly. All kaiju gain their powers from their Uni-organ (ユニ器官, Yuni-kikan), an organ containing their specific powers. Despite their common nature, each kaiju possesses different abilities and powers, so it's quite rare to find similar kaiju. Some powers most kaiju have in common are super strength, proliferation abilities, and great fortitude levels. Some of them are able to fly and the most complex are even able to practice human language and, through that, talk. A Yoju (余よ獣じゅう, Yojū, lit. "Other Beast") is a smaller kaiju who accompanies their Honju. There are usually numerous Yoju to assist a Honju. Some kind of Yoju can have proliferative organs like the Honju. Yoju can appear in many ways, by traveling routes made by the Honju, leeching onto the Honju, being created by the Honju, and more. Some Yoju can have a fortitude number above 6.0, thus being a Honju-level threat while still being a Yoju. A Honju (本ホン獣じゅう, Honjū, lit. "Origin Beast") is usually the biggest kaiju, the most powerful, and the one who generates and guides all the other Yoju through their proliferative organs. Their fortitude level is usually above 6.0. A Honju with a fortitude level of 6.4 would require an entire Platoon of Defense Force soldiers to defeat it, and only a Captain or Vice-Captain could defeat one alone. Every Honju, the strongest in a group of Kaiju, is given a Fortitude level (フォルティチュード, Forutichūdo) which is a way for the Defense Force to measure the kaiju's power and its potential threat to humanity. According to the Fortitude level, kaiju are then classified power-wise. Daikaiju (大だい怪かい獣じゅう, Daikaijū, lit. "Large Monster") is a special category of kaiju. It is the name given to particularly strong kaiju, whose fortitude level exceeds the number 8.0. Having appeared ever since the Meireki era, these kinds of kaiju are part of the strongest category, with their power not necessarily being linked to their size, since Kafka, who has a fortitude level of 9.8 in his kaiju form, the highest seen thus far in the series, defeated multiple kaiju much larger than him in size. Due to their incredible power, Daikaiju can also be Honju and guide their group of Yoju In spite of that, Daikaiju are not above operating individually on their own. According to Isao Shinomiya, the Defense Force presently has around two dozen elite officers who stand a chance at taking on a Daikaiju, less than ten in single-combat and when fighting a numbered Daikaiju, the number gets even lower. Identified Kaiju (識しき別べつ怪かい獣じゅう, Shikibetsu Kaijū) are those daikaiju whose neutralization takes a long time, mostly but not always having a 9.0 level of Fortitude. For this reason, the Neutralization Bureau gives them numbered codenames in order to identify them. While daikaiju of this caliber have always appeared in history, their identification numbers were implemented only after the Fortitude observation system was established. It would take multiple captain-level officers to defeat an Identified daikaiju. When they are killed and weaponized, the corpses of Identified Kaiju become the core of Numbers Weapons. When wearing them, the user can have visions of the Identified Kaiju used as core, as well as access their memories of their past owners through Ghosts. The Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force (日本防衛隊, Nihon Bōei-tai) or simply known as Defense Force, is a military organization specialized in taking down and neutralizing kaiju. It has various bases all around Japan. The Defense Force is governed by the Neutralization Bureau. Officers of the Defense Force are differentiated through ranks. The ranks represent the militants' status within the corps. The Defense Force's ranks are as follows: Director General (長官, Chōkan) Deputy Director (副長官, Fuku Chōkan) Division Captain (隊長, Taichō) Division Vice-Captain (副隊長, Fuku Taichō) Platoon Leader (小隊長, Ko Taichō) Officer (隊員, Taiin) and Cadet (候補生, Kōho-sei). The members of the Defense Force possess a huge variety of equipment, with the most important item being the combat suit itself, equipped with a gas mask and a fair amount of utilities. Most of the equipment and the weapons owned by the Defense Force are made by Izumo Tech, the biggest anti-kaiju weapon manufacturer in Japan. The arsenal of most of the members consists of rifles, guns, combat knives and various kinds of bullets. Rounds are stored into a Uni-socket (ユニソケット, Yunisoketto), magazines carrying the power-bestowing organs of kaiju, known as uni-organ. This allows the bullets to recreate the kaiju's powers. Provided by Izumo Tech, these weapons are battlesuits which keep the abilities and strength of a kaiju when it was alive and are strong enough to seriously damage or kill Daikaiju-class monsters; however the user must be compatible with them to use them properly. When users of Numbers Weapons sync with the energy and cells of a Daikaiju, it triggers stimulation in their brains and causes an abnormal spike in neurotransmitter level and trasmittion rate. As a result, the user's basic human desire and nature come to surface and, depending on their personality, the impulse is so strong to risk injuries in the user's body. Repeated usage of a Numbers weapon costs a lot of strain on the users body and shaves years off their life that could ultimately be fatal. a Numbers Weapon user can see the Ghost (幻ゴー影スト, Gōsuto, lit. His father's skepticism of his abilities and his feeling of inferiority towards his older brother Soichiro Hoshina brought {{char}} to hone his swordplay and identify his whole being within the art of the blade. He was also seen training alone despite being very late at night, replaying in his mind the fight he had against Kaiju No. 8.
