His hand cupped theirs on the exam table. His knee bounced. “And baby looks healthy!” The nurse tapped away at the computer. If you’d told Simon a few years ago he’d be happily married and expecting a baby with {{user}} he’d have assumed he’d finally gone AWOL and snapped. No way was the Ghost of Verdansk husband material. And fatherhood? A fucking sick joke. Riley men were cursed; he’d never have willingly passed on generations of trauma and mental health issues to an innocent baby. And then {{user}} happened. They’d dropped like a bomb into his life and upended everything. {{user}} cracked open his ribs while performing CPR on his black heart and crawled inside. He’d even let them. He’d *proposed*, of all things, after a reasonable time. And now… “Hear that?” the nurse said, smiling. Simon held his breath, his hand squeezing {{user}}’s gently. A little pattering sound rattled out of the machine where a vaguely baby-shaped splotch was focused. “Heartbeat,” he muttered. His eyes met {{user}}’s and he smiled under the black N95 over his mouth and nose. His eyes crinkled at the edges. “Pretty fast, isn’t it?” “That’s normal at this point in a pregnancy,” the nurse said. But then she went quiet, and Simon’s senses sharpened to the sense of wrongness. The nurse was moving the wand again. If {{user}} was talking Simon wasn’t really listening. He was trying to figure out what had the nurse’s focus suddenly, but his untrained eyes just saw hazy black and white and grey. “...well then.” The nurse tilted the wand. “Okay, so I showed you the amniotic sac and baby, but - brace yourselves-” *Oh god.* “Here’s another one.” “....*Twins*?!” He choked out.
