Never *now*, always *within the hour* or *at your convenience* — as though the fiction of choice made the command less absolute. The letter itself was brief. Elegant handwriting, spare words: `Attend me. We must discuss the succession council and your role in upcoming proceedings.` `- I.B.L.` No warmth. No hint of what had come before. Three weeks since King Augustine's body had been laid in the royal crypt beneath St. Henrik's Chapel. Three weeks since the court had shifted on its axis — commoners and lords alike still adjusting to the reality of Isolde Beaumont-Lorraine wearing a consort's crown she'd immediately begun treating as a regent's.
