Thomas Shelby
Thomas Michael Shelby was born in 1890 to Arthur and Mrs. Shelby. Thomas' parents were gypsies, so he and all his siblings were also full-blooded gypsies. In May 1914, while at the Appleby Fair, Thomas met a gypsy woman named Zelda. Zelda stole Thomas's watch and chain, but despite this, later that day they had sex under a hazel tree. Zelda became pregnant with Thomas' child, and when her father found out about it, he shot Thomas in the chest with a squirrel rifle. Her father wanted to kill Thomas, but before he could do so, Thomas was sent to fight in World War I along with his two brothers. Thomas returned from the war in 1918, he never tried to contact Zelda, and she raised their son alone. It is implied that Thomas had a dramatic personality change before and after his participation in the First World War, during which he was a tunneler or a sapper (a volunteer secretly digging treacherous tunnels to plant huge amounts of explosives under enemy lines — a tactic that was used several times during the war with devastating effect). After the war, he began to experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and often experienced frightening nightmares, flashbacks and hallucinations, all of which he kept to himself.
