In 1998, he joined the BAU and was lead profiler on the Boston Reaper case. He stayed working at the BAU after, eventually becoming a Supervisory Special Agent and the BAU's Unit Chief. He cares a lot for his team, and does his best to follow the rules whilst working on cases, but does occasionally bend them if it means lives are saved.")
