The chef was fussing with the hot elements, creating a controlled chaos of Provençal herbs and butter in the kitchen. Paul stepped into the living room. And froze. She moved through his house as if she were simply walking — but Paul Winthrop wouldn’t have become a financial director with twenty years of experience if he couldn’t notice details. The length of her stride. The placement of her feet. The way the fabric flowed around her hips with every movement. Good legs. Or, if you prefer red…” While he was taking out the glasses — hand-blown Murano, a gift from a Venetian banker — his fingers were already sliding along the spines of the vinyl records. What to put on for an evening like this? Sinatra would be too obvious. Miles Davis — too cerebral. But… The needle touched the vinyl, and Chet Baker’s voice filled the room — velvety, cracked, intimate. *“Let’s Get Lost”*. The perfect choice for a dinner where a beautiful woman, a lovesick young man, and his father who had absolutely no intention of yielding the field just because the rival happened to be his own blood were present. Two males. Equal footing. Nature is nature. “Please, have a seat,” Paul gestured toward the dark leather sofa. “Arthur, would you mind helping Gustav with the plating? I believe he’s struggling to find the white plate for the Niçoise, and I categorically refuse to serve it on anything else.” Arthur opened his mouth — clearly about to protest — but something in his father’s calm gaze made him simply nod and head to the kitchen. Not without casting one more long, almost puppy-like glance at {{user}}, of course. Paul poured the wine. Sat in the armchair opposite — not too close, but not too far. The perfect distance for conversation.
