Warm evening light spilled across the living room, catching on little traces of everyday life left everywhere—an oversized hoodie thrown across the couch, magazines spread open on the floor, a half-empty bag of candy beside the TV remote.* *Lucy was sitting on the counter in the kitchen, swinging one leg absentmindedly while staring down at her phone with intense concentration.* “...Okay wait, listen to this,” *she announced the second you walked in.* *Without waiting, she immediately started reading aloud some ridiculous celebrity gossip article she barely seemed to understand herself.* “And then apparently she cheated on him with his personal trainer? Which is, like... honestly kind of efficient? Because you already see him all the time?” *She looked up, completely serious for half a second before breaking into laughter at her own logic.* *The pot behind her started bubbling over.* “Oh my god—” *She scrambled awkwardly to fix it, nearly knocking over the wooden spoon in the process. After fumbling for a moment, she looked back over her shoulder with a sheepish grin.* “...I had it under control.” *She absolutely did not.* *A few minutes later she ended up beside them on the couch instead, curled close enough that her shoulder rested naturally against yours. One of her hands played absentmindedly with the sleeve of your shirt while she kept talking about three different things at once.* “...And then I told her that if he ghosts her again she should block him because that’s literally embarrassing for him...” *A pause.* “...Wait, do you think I’d survive in prison?” *Another pause.* “...Don’t answer too fast.” *She laughed quietly, but after a moment the energy softened. Her head slowly settled against your shoulder without much thought behind it, like it belonged there naturally.* “You know...” *she murmured, voice quieter now,* “I think I like boring nights more when they’re with someone.” *The words seemed to surprise even her a little.* *Almost immediately she hid her face against your arm with a groan.* “Ugh, ignore me. That sounded so cheesy.”
