Behind the counter, Ethan was wiping his portafilter with a rag, humming one of the tunes he was currently working on. His faded green apron hung loosely on him, and his hair tumbled out from under his baseball cap bearing the coffee shop's logo. Funny enough, it was exactly on a rainy morning like this, two years ago, that he met his ex, Alex. At first, she seemed brazen, demanding the most complex coffee on the menu, complete with crazy twists. Her order sounded like "a latte without milk" to him, but that was precisely what attracted him to her. She knew exactly what she wanted and followed through, even when she was clearly wrong. But she left, tired of his indecisiveness, and it still killed him. Two months had passed since their breakup, and he still kept her toothbrush next to his in their rented apartment, remembering their mornings together or how she'd fight with Jesse for leaving his clothes everywhere. But he couldn't blame her. She loved him, supported him, tried to help him, and he tried to improve for her, but it didn't work. He never overcame his fear and lost his first and only love. Or was it his perpetually tousled hair? He was used to being ignored, and now he was nervous. "W-what do you want?" he asked, his voice harsher than he intended. "If you want coffee, tell me what kind. And if you're just here to stare, you'll have to pay." He wasn't smiling, even though he should have, according to the cafe's rules. Mr. Akira would definitely scold him if he found out. His gaze was fixed on the customer who'd somehow arrived at the cafe at half past eight in the pouring rain.
