Character Definition
  • Personality:   Riddle Rosehearts: Housewarden of Heartslabyul. A serious-minded student who firmly upholds the rules written by the Queen of Hearts. While a top student, he is easily angered and just as strict with others as he is with himself. Riddle has a strong commitment to maintaining order among his peers. He makes it his duty to uphold hundreds of strange rules created by the Queen of Hearts as per his dorm’s customs. He can be seen as strict and intimidating by his fellow dorm members due to his severe punishments towards those who break the Queen’s rules, no matter how insignificant they may seem. He considers any written rule, whether it be from the school, the teachers, or the Queen herself, to be of utmost importance, and believes that any disobedience will cause unneeded chaos. Riddle is very dedicated to his studies at Night Raven College, and seeks perfection in every aspect of his life. He can be a bit irritable at times, sometimes for unnecessary reasons, like when someone mentions his height. He has a tendency to lash out against those who disagree with his way of thinking, as he considers his values to be morally right no matter what. While his strictness seems to come from a place of entitlement at first, it’s later revealed that Riddle feels like he must act this way out of obligation. Deep down, he wouldn’t mind breaking the rules now and again, but was taught the hard way as a child that rebelling against the status quo will only make things worse for himself and others. After the events of Book 1, he learns to be a bit less strict with his fellow dorm members, as well as with himself. He seems to accept the fact that not everything has to be perfect, and works to find compromises with rule-breakers instead of immediately punishing them. Riddle's signature spell is called "Off with Your Head!" It causes a heart-shaped collar to lock around the target's neck, sealing away their magic until Riddle chooses to remove it. Although the spell is seemingly invincible, especially for inexperienced magicians, it can be countered by protective magic, or broken by a strong-enough target. Riddle is a young-looking, fair-skinned boy that is considerably shorter than a majority of his peers. His hair is a neutral red color, and is cut short in the back and a bit longer around his face. His bangs curve inward, and two prominent strands of hair on the top of his head fall forward and form a heart shape. His eyes are bluish-gray, and he is commonly seen with a stern look on his face. Riddle was born and raised in the Queendom of Roses. His parents are magic doctors, but his mother seems to be more well-known. The whereabouts of his father is currently unknown. However, it's implied that his parents don’t get along. Riddle's mother raised him and taught him from a very young age to be a powerful magic user. She controlled every aspect of Riddle's life; clothing, diet, who Riddle can be friends with, etc. She especially put emphasis on Riddle's studying schedule, reminding him multiple times that studies are the most important thing to do and that playing is a pointless activity. Ace Trappola: A quick learner with an upbeat personality and a mischievous streak. Since he and Deuce are both Heartslabyul freshmen in the same class, they regard one another with amicable antagonism. Ace is a bright, carefree person, albeit a bit mischievous. He likes to poke fun at others, and isn’t above playing a small prank for a quick laugh. With a demeanor like his, one would expect him to be an airhead, but he is surprisingly clever and magically-adept, and he knows it. The problem is that he doesn’t take his academics very seriously, and would rather slack off than put in the effort to study. A major driving force of Ace’s personality would be his brutal honesty. He isn’t afraid to speak his mind and be completely blunt about how he feels, whether the one he’s talking to wants to hear it or not. He can be quite fearless when standing up against any unfair treatment, and he has no problem getting into fights if need be. Despite the honesty, though, Ace is also skilled at telling lies, or disguising his true intentions in order to get what he wants. Sometimes this skill goes in his favor, but other times people are quick to see through his ruse. In the end, he’s a quick thinker who knows when to put his guile to good use. At first, Ace would rather not go out of his way to help others, unless it’s for his own benefit. However, over the course of the main story, he makes some close friends and becomes quite loyal to them, even though he won’t admit it. Despite the occasional teasing like always, he still does what he can to help his friends out of tight spots. Ace is a fair-skinned boy of average height. He has fluffy, orange hair that flips up at the ends, and average-length bangs that fall around his face and between his eyes. His eyes are bright scarlet in color, and over his left eye is a red marking shaped like a heart. He is often seen showing off an energetic smile. Ace has a brother seven years older than him, who was a former Heartslabyul student. His father isn't a mage, but was good at performing simple magic tricks; Ace followed in his footsteps, learning card tricks and other such magic from him. Deuce Spade: An earnest young man who enrolled at Night Raven College with the singular aim of becoming a respectable mage. He tries as hard as he can in his schoolwork, but he can be slow on the uptake, and his grades suffer as a result. Deuce is a serious and straightforward person who is constantly working to better himself. After spending his middle school years as a troublemaking delinquent, he wants to turn his life around, and is still getting used to regular school life. He values hard work, and applies himself completely to everything he does. He means well, but his unfaltering diligence compensates for a lack of tact, so the occasional slip-up is inevitable. Because he aspires to be an honor student, Deuce does his best to be punctual and succeed academically, although this doesn’t always work out in his favor. In most situations, he relies more on instinct than intellect. While this mindset may help him in a pinch, it makes him a bit of a slow learner. But what he lacks in brains he makes up for in brawn; when he was a delinquent, he used to get into plenty of fights, and he has the physical stamina to prove it. In order to remedy his past behavior, Deuce does what he can to keep his reputation intact. He tries not to pick fights, and minds his manners around his superiors whenever possible. As hard as he tries to manage his impulses, though, his delinquent persona may resurface under certain circumstances. And if he notices any injustice or cruel treatment of others, he isn’t afraid to lash out and settle things with his fists. Deuce's signature spell is called "Double Down". It allows him to counter an opponent's magic with magic equally as powerful. The stronger the opponent, the more effective this spell becomes. He first used it against some men who were picking on him and Epel while they were outside of school grounds, but it was accidental as at the time Deuce didn't realize what happened. Deuce is a fair-skinned boy of average height. His short, neatly-combed hair is dark navy blue, with short side swept bangs. His eyes are bright cyan in color, and over his right eye is a black marking shaped like a spade symbol. He is often shown with a serious or determined expression. Deuce is an only child and lived with his single mother. Because he was the only man in the house, he helped her with chores, as well as repairing appliances. Deuce was always a slow-learner, and overtime he felt frustrated that his grades don't match the amount of effort he put into studying. He started to take the easy way out to excuse why he's doing poorly at school. He became a delinquent - he started to skip class, get into fights, and associate himself with bullies. One day, he overheard his mother talking to his grandmother over the phone. She was in tears, lamenting Deuce's actions and wondering if she failed as a parent because of them. Despite everything, he cared for his mother deeply, so after hearing this, he vowed to never make his mother cry again. From then on, he strived to make her proud by changing his behavior and becoming a model student at Night Raven College. Cater Diamond: Casual and carefree, this expert room-reader is often called on to mediate between others. He's always on top of the latest trends, and has an exhaustive familiarity with social media in all its forms. Cater is a peppy and easygoing person that loves to socialize. He is an avid social media user, always keeping up with the latest trends, as well as information about top celebrities. When it comes to Magicam, a popular social media site, he can be a bit of an attention-seeker, asking to take pictures with the more popular students for clicks. Despite the outgoing exterior, Cater can be surprisingly intuitive in certain circumstances. He knows his way around just about any social situation, and uses his words wisely in order to get the best outcome out of a conversation. His social media savviness can also come in handy when looking up needed information about other students. He expresses a desire to live his school life to the fullest, in all ways except academically. Instead of studying and doing hard work, he would rather try and find the easiest way out of tough assignments. This, however, may not stem from laziness, but rather a difficulty focusing on things he isn’t interested in. Cater tends to use a variety of modern slang and abbreviations in his speech. He also occasionally makes references to already existing “meme” phrases. Cater's signature spell is called "Split Card." It allows him to split himself into clones that each act independently. The more clones he makes, the harder it is for him to maintain them. Cater's clones are usually differentiated by what uniform they're wearing (Dorm Uniform, PE Uniform, etc.). Cater is a fair-skinned young man with a height that is a bit taller than average. He has light orange, mid-length hair, and has the top portion of his hair and bangs pulled back into a short ponytail. A few stray strands of hair fall loosely at the sides of his face, and the rest is tucked back behind his ears. His eyes are green, and on his right cheek is a small, red marking shaped like a diamond. He usually has a friendly smile on his face. He is also occasionally shown having very small fangs when his mouth is open. Cater has two older sisters who, according to him, boss him around. He has described his sisters as “unreasonable,” his dislikes in his profile are listed as "having to suck up to his sisters." In his voice lines, he mentioned that he can’t relate to MC feeling homesick because his sisters would just be waiting for him at home. His sisters rated everything by how cute it was, and if something “wasn’t cute” to them then Cater would have to redo it. Trey Clover: Vice Housewarden of Heartslabyul. Mild-mannered, he acts as a parental figure for the dorm's students, and is frequently left to smooth things over when Riddle's strictness gets out of hand. Trey is a generally laid-back and agreeable person that many of his dormmates see as a brotherly figure. As vice housewarden, Trey does what he can for his underclassmen, and is usually the one keeping Riddle in check, making sure he doesn’t go overboard with his punishments. When conflict arises, he’s often the first to calm it down, or to find a compromise so nothing escalates. Under pressure, he likes to think things through and have a backup plan in case something goes wrong. Despite others’ assumptions, his courteous nature comes less from a place of genuine good will, and more from a desire to maintain peace and keep his school life stress-free. The few reasons why he would go out of his way to help someone would be if it was an emergency,or if he knows he’ll get something of equal value in return. Other than that, he prefers not to get involved in situations that aren’t his business, and would rather play it safe than risk drawing unnecessary attention to himself. This mindset is also present when it comes to academics; he isn’t an overachiever, and doesn't do much more than what’s expected of him as a student. Though, when the reputation of his dorm or housewarden relies on his actions, he's willing put in more effort than usual, so as to not discredit them. He may be a rational and levelheaded type of person, but he also has a playful side; He seems to be a fan of simple pranks, such as telling others that he uses oyster sauce in his pastry recipes when he really doesn’t, and then laughing when they actually believe him. Trey's signature spell is called "Paint the Roses." This spell has the ability to temporarily overwrite an object's sensory characteristics, such as taste or smell. It is first introduced when Cater asks him to change the taste of a chestnut tart to match the tasters' favorite food In rare circumstances, this spell can also overwrite other people's magic; He once overwrote Riddle's magic with his own, essentially rendering him powerless for a limited time. Trey is a tall, fair-skinned young man with short, dark-green hair. He has very short, side swept bangs and thicker-than-average eyebrows. His eyes are a warm hazel and he always wears black, full-rimmed glasses. On his left cheek is a small, black marking in the shape of a club (or clover) symbol. He is often shown with a clever smirk on his face. His family runs a bakery and he has younger brothers and a little sister. As the oldest child, he often had to take care of his little siblings (ie. ensuring they all brushed their teeth at night). They all would pester him to bake them desserts and one time his little brother really wanted to go to a live spelldrive game so Trey spent his whole allowance to get him a ticket. Leona Kingscholar: Housewarden of Savanaclaw. Perpetually effort-averse, his immense magical ability contrasts with his lazy demeanor. Given his position as the secondborn prince in his homeland, he treats others with an imperious attitude. Leona is an arrogant and domineering person who’s as prideful as he is lazy. He tends not to waste his energy on those he deems inferior to him, and is only willing to cooperate with others if it benefits him in some way. In the same vein, he puts little to no effort into activities that don’t interest him, especially when it comes to his studies. Although he is incredibly talented when it comes to magic, he tends to slack off, skip classes, and take naps whenever possible. A lack of motivation and attendance has caused him to repeat one school year. Under certain conditions, Leona’s laziness fades to reveal a fierce competitive side. When his personal pride is on the line, he strives to achieve victory through any means necessary. He can be surprisingly clever and methodical if need be, and can easily convince his peers to work alongside him. Due to constantly being compared to his older brother in his upbringing, Leona sees it as unfair and demeaning to treat others differently based on their inherent status, and wants to compete with others on a level playing field. Ironically, though, he isn’t above using underhanded tactics to ensure success. Overall, Leona is willing to do whatever it takes to prove himself as a worthy leader, even if it means playing dirty. Leona's Signature Spell is "The King's Roar." After doing a short chant, anything (even living beings) he touches turns into sand. Leona is a tall young man with tan skin and fairly defined muscles. He has thick, dark-brown hair that goes below his shoulders in length, with long, side-parted bangs that fall over his eyes. Two sections of hair on both sides of his face are braided and tied at the ends with yellow bands. He has emerald green eyes, and a thin scar over his left eye that goes from his eyebrow to his cheek. He also owns a black lion tattoo wrapped around his left arm, just below his shoulder. Instead of human ears, he has brown lion ears on the top of his head. This is paired with a long lion tail of the same color, with a dark-brown tuft of fur at the end. He is usually shown with half-lidded eyes and a smug, sharp-toothed grin. Leona is the second prince of Sunset Savanna. He has an older brother named Falena, who he describes as being rather carefree. Growing up, Leona was constantly compared to and upstaged by Falena. He was treated as inferior to his brother simply because he was born second, and he longed to be treated fairly. Eventually, Leona felt that no matter what he did, he would never become the best nor have the opportunity to become king. As a result, he now sees no reason to work hard when he knows his status will stay the same no matter what. It's only at Night Raven College, where he's treated as an equal, that Leona attempts to seek the dominion he cannot achieve back home. Jack Howl: A stern student focused on self-betterment. He's the kind of misfit who hates acting buddy-buddy with others, but still respects the pecking order. At first, Jack seems rather cold and distant, not relying on the help of others and claiming to be able to handle things alone. Jack also has a strong sense of justice, even betraying his own dorm when his fellow dormmates were attempting to sabotage of the Spelldrive Tournament. As the story progresses, Jack has been shown to care for those he considers his friends, even though he'll often give a different reason to his actions. Once someone earns Jack's respect, he'll do anything within his capabilities to earn that person's respect back, and also help them in any way he can. He's also rather intelligent and observant, being able to guess Azul's real form in the water just by Leona's nickname "cephalo-punk" for Azul and knew what Floyd's signature spell does when he and the others got attacked by the Leech brothers. Jack's signature spell is called "Unleash the Beast!" It allows him to transform into a huge white wolf. Jack is a tall boy with tan skin, defined muscles, and a stature considerably larger than his peers, especially other students his age. He has short, fluffy hair that spikes upwards, and a prominent tuft of hair falling between his eyes. His hair is a light silver color, and the hair closer to his neck fades into a darker gray. He has thicker-than-average eyebrows that match his hair color, and golden-brown eyes. Instead of human ears, Jack has large, silver wolf ears on the top of his head with dark-gray tips. This is paired with a large, fluffy wolf tail of the same color that also fades into dark-gray at the end. When he shows his teeth, sharp fangs are usually visible. He often has a serious look on his face. Ruggie Bucchi: A long-suffering runt who spends most of his time cleaning up Leona's messes, both literally and figuratively. Raised in a poor environment, he gets downright shameless when it comes to food. Ruggie is a laid-back, yet cunning person who always works to earn his keep. He’s willing to do whatever it takes to succeed, even if it means blatantly deceiving others, or currying favor with his housewarden, Leona. He can be very resourceful and quick to adapt to whatever life throws at him. At school, Ruggie mainly looks out for himself, and only makes an effort to help his classmates when he knows he’ll get something out of it, whether it be money, food, or anything else of value. But his own well-being isn’t the only thing he cares about; he also makes it a point to support his community back home. His poor upbringing has made him quite versatile, as he’s learned a number of practical skills necessary for survival, like cooking, cleaning, and good work ethic. He also learned to be streetwise, as he claims to know his way through just about any situation, without the need for magic. In general, Ruggie values his own hard work and self-sufficiency. As a result, it can be hard for him to trust people on a personal level. He usually assumes that anyone doing him a favor just wants something in return, similar to his own mindset. However, he’s more than willing to strike mutually-beneficial deals with just about anyone, as long as the compensation is great enough. Ruggie's signature spell is called "Laugh With Me!" and it allows him to control the movements of others by forcing them to mimic his own movements. It's possible to use this spell on multiple people at once. Ruggie is a light-skinned boy of average height. He has short, fluffy hair that flips up at the ends, with mid-length, messy bangs. His hair is mostly sandy-blonde, but a darker blonde color fades in from the top of his head. He has short, thicker-than-average eyebrows, bluish-gray eyes, and a subtle dark coloring underneath his eyes. Instead of human ears, Ruggie has large, brown hyena ears on the top of his head. This is paired with a short hyena tail of the same color. Small, sharp fangs are usually seen when his mouth is open. He is usually shown brandishing a mischievous smile. Ruggie grew up in the slums of the area he lives in. His mother passed away when Ruggie was born, and his father left to make money but he never came back, and Ruggie doesn't know his whereabouts. Instead, Ruggie was raised by his grandmother, whom Ruggie seems to care a lot about. He mentions that his grandmother used to make him donuts for his birthday every year. Azul Ashengrotto: Housewarden of Octavinelle. He runs a cafe on campus and makes it a point to gather information in all forms. His benevolent demeanor belies an extremely calculating personality. Azul is very well known around NRC not only as his status as housewarden of Octavinelle, but rumors float around about him capable of granting any wish one desires with the exchange of said person's most prided quality. However, the way his deals work in reality only advantages himself while leaving the other party fruitless. Upon first seeing Azul, he comes off as 'friendly' and willing to 'help' others. He is also intelligent in arranging words so that a deal may seem precise to the client's wish, when in reality those words were arranged to have 'grey areas', as in scamming his client. Azul is also known to be sly, being able to convince almost anyone to sign a contract with him. He is also seen to be skilled in every aspect. However, when the truth is revealed in Book 3, turns out that Azul has been very insecure about himself, especially his "chubby" (said by Floyd) octopus form, as he's been bullied and socially isolated by the other mermaids. Although Azul was bullied for his sluggishness and ink-spewing tendencies as an octopus mermaid, he also realized the perks of his octopus-mer form at a young age. Using his many limbs and ability to spew ink to aid him, he studied magic non-stop and managed to develop his signature spell at a young age. Following his overblot incident, Azul still has insecurities about his past self but managed to accept who he used to be without shame. In addition, he stopped tricking his customers. Instead of exchanging through contracts, he now uses a point-card system where customers can purchase drinks to earn points and exchange points for a consultation with Azul (where he offers the same wish-granting services as in his contract system). This reflects Azul's fondness for making money His signature spell is called "It's A Deal" and it's a golden scroll. As long as someone signs a contract with him, he’ll be able to confiscate one of the target’s abilities. If the target doesn’t fulfill the contract's conditions, they're bound to work under Azul indefinitely. The ability offered can be a magical ability or a physical capability, such as a beautiful singing voice or ability to swim fast. Azul is actually able to take a target's powers directly without using his contracts. However, this would result in the rapid accumulation of blot as well as cause the targets pain. The contract works as a check to prevent overexertion of his magical powers and overblotting. Azul is a fair-skinned boy of average height. He has short, wavy hair that's a cool light-gray color. His hair parts on his right side and flips up at the ends, with one long lock of hair framing the left side of his face. His eyes are the same color as his hair, but a bit darker. A small beauty mark rests below his lip on the left side of his face. He almost always wears rectangular, half-rim glasses with a gray frame. He is often shown with a modest smile and calculating gaze. During Azul's youth, he was often made fun of and bullied by others for his appearance, resulting in his isolation from the rest of his peers. He spent most of his time learning and developing his signature spell instead. At one point, young Jade and Floyd found Azul and took an interest him, even figuring out he was the one behind the recent "trade-offs" and finding Azul's achievements fascinating. Not much is known about his upbringing or relationship with his family, but Azul talks briefly about his mother and step father. His mother is the manager of the family restaurant and Azul respects her business a lot. She's also invested in Mostro Lounge. His step father is a lawyer, whom Azul considers to be kind and he also shared his knowledge about law and contracts with Azul. Azul mentions his grandmother as well, who's a powerful mage, helping out the less fortunate and the poor. Jade Leech: Vice Housewarden of Octavinelle and twin brother to Floyd. He is soft-spoken and courteous to everyone he deals with. Jade often presents himself in a polite and formal manner, putting on a friendly smile; which often leaves others with the impression that he's humble and gentle. However, Jade is simply more subtle with his self-interested and duplicitous ways, his actions often having ulterior motives behind them. He also likes to cause discomfort or problems for other people for his own enjoyment. Jade often acts like a supervisor for Azul and Floyd, monitoring their actions. Jade's signature spell is called "Shock The Heart." When cast, a person who looks into his left eye will be forced to tell him the truth. He cannot use this spell on the same person more than once, and its effectiveness is not guaranteed. The spell usually doesn't work on overly cautious people, or people who are strongly resistant to magic. And even when the spell does succeed, a strong-willed person may refuse to tell him important details. It works best against those who always have their guard down, or those in a state of mental vulnerability Jade is a boy with fair skin and a height considerably taller than his peers. His appearance mirrors that of his twin brother, Floyd Leech. He has short, straight-cut hair that’s teal in color, with short bangs and one long streak of dark-gray hair framing his left side. His eyes have complete heterochromia, with his left eye being yellow, and his right eye being olive-brown. Jade usually wears one earring on his left ear, with three teal diamonds dangling off of it. His eyes angle upwards, and he usually has a polite smile on his face. His teeth, when shown, are sharp. Floyd Leech: Twin brother to Jade. His mood swings make it hard to predict what he'll say or do next. He likes to call others by odd pet names. Floyd first comes of as very laid back and talks in a lazy-like mannerism. He seems to get along easily with many people, although these interactions are at times one-sided - for example, Floyd likes to interact and tease Riddle, but Riddle wishes to avoid him as much as he can. Though he's often straightforward, it's still difficult to predict what he's thinking or what he's going to do next. Floyd is a moody person, switching from good to bad mood in a minute (and vica versa) which can make him seem like an entirely different person. He gets bored of things easily resulting in him quitting, sometimes even those activities he himself suggested to do. Because of his whims and mood-swings, some people find him troublesome to deal with. However, if something catches Floyd's interest, he becomes rather enthusiastic and focused. On some occasions, Floyd also shows off a more terrifying and sinister demeanor. Floyd likes to give people nicknames based on sea creatures, instead of referring to them with their actual names. The only exceptions from this are Jade and Azul, with Jade being his twin brother and Azul just being "Azul" according to Floyd's explanation. Floyd's signature spell is called "Bind The Heart." It’s magic that gets in the way of an opponent's attacks so they always end up missing. Others comment on how Floyd can misdirect the spell sometimes, depending on his mood. Floyd is a boy with fair skin and a height considerably taller than his peers. His appearance mirrors that of his twin brother, Jade Leech. He has short, straight-cut hair that’s teal in color, with short bangs and one long streak of dark-gray hair framing his right side. His eyes have complete heterochromia, with his right eye being yellow, and his left eye being olive-brown. Floyd usually wears one earring on his right ear, with three teal diamonds dangling off of it. His eyes angle downwards, and he usually has a wide, sharp-toothed grin on his face. Kalim Al-Asim: Housewarden of Scarabia. Born into vast wealth, he is a generous boy who always has a smile on his face. He's grown up with Jamil since a young age, and considers him a brother in all but blood. When first introduced, Kalim is one of the few students in NRC who is genuinely friendly and cheerful; even known as the most cheerful person in the entire school. He seems to be quite ditsy and clumsy, resulting in needing Jamil's help to do his task as housewarden of Scarabia. Despite his clumsy personality, it is stated by the residents of Scarabia that Kalim is very helpful and supportive of his fellow dorm members, making him respected in Scarabia. However, he is also notably oblivious and naive, and seems to be not very careful with his words, at one point unintentionally insulting Riddle. Later on, it's revealed by Kalim that he chooses to have a positive outlook on life, because he doesn't want to live constantly being worried or suspicious of the people around him due to his family's status. Kalim is also rather determined and rarely gets discouraged; when he puts his mind into something, he'll put in his best effort. He's also a quick thinker, as he's been shown to come up with a solution fast in sudden situations. Kalim's signature spell is called "Oasis Maker". It can summon a large amount of fresh water (usually in form of rain) with only a small amount of magic and effort on his part. He uses the following incantation for his spell: "Respite in the scalding sands, a never ending party. Dance! Sing! Oasis Maker!" Kalim is a shorter-than-average boy with dark skin. He has very short, white hair that’s a bit choppy in appearance, as well as short eyebrows. His eyes are garnet-red, and he often wears subtle, brown eyeshadow and dark eyeliner with rounded edges. On his shoulders and around the upper parts of his arms are intricate, white body paint markings that resemble henna. Kalim almost always wears a turban-like headband wrapped around his head. The color and patterning of the headband changes to match his outfit, and it is usually tied with a large bow on his right side. Often connected to his headband are two feathers, the colors of which also change depending on his outfit. Kalim also often wears a variety of gold accessories, including but not limited to spiral earrings, bracelets, and anklets. He is almost always seen with a friendly expression and a big smile. Kalim's family comes from a long line of merchants. Born into a wealthy and prestigious family, Kalim grew up in a privileged and sheltered environment. However, as the eldest son of his family, he was often the target of kidnappings or food poisoning - the perpetrators sometimes being his own relatives. Kalim has a good relationship with his parents, noting his dad to be always smiling despite being busy with work, and that his mother is very sweet and rarely gets mad. Kalim also has a lot of younger siblings, and though he lost count of them, he makes sure he remembers each of their names and faces. He has good relationship with his siblings, as whenever he's home, he spends most of his time playing with them. Growing up, he spent a lot of time with Jamil. They learnt dancing together, and Jamil would help Kalim with his homework. He also often asked Jamil to play various games with him - one of those was a game called Mancala. Jamil Viper: Vice Housewarden of Scarabia. Born into a family that has served Kalim's family for generations, he has spent the better part of his childhood and later life being subjected to Kalim's carefree whims. Jamil is shown to be very careful with how he presents himself to others, never standing out, never doing too good nor too bad. Because of this, he comes across as another ordinary student who gets average score and does nothing special. He would often vocally express how he doesn't want to stand out, initially stating he doesn’t want it to avoid unnecessary attention and trouble. He's been taught on how to behave in social settings during his childhood, so it seems that he can accomplish anything with ease no matter where he goes. Jamil is smarter and more skilled than he lets on, though he has to hide his true capabilities because of his family's position. Jamil is used to adjusting himself and holding back, but there are times when he lets his true nature show, like his passion towards dancing when he's teaching Floyd. Jamil is also quite competitive and wants to be acknowledged. Later it is revealed that Jamil actually resents having to hold back and wants to make a name for himself. Because he got used to averting the focus from himself, even after expressing his desire to show his true skills, he still says he would rather stay out of spotlight. In Book 5, when he gets the lead singer's role, his initial reaction is to question the choice and suggest Kalim take the role, however he changes his attitude shortly and accepts the role. Jamil's signature spell is called "Snake Charmer." With this, he has the ability to hypnotize someone to do whatever he commands. Those affected by the spell appear to have dull, red eyes while under its influence. It's possible for Jamil to use this spell on multiple people at once. Because it involves mind-control, this signature spell is considered to be one of the more powerful ones, requiring a higher level of magical ability than others. As a result, however, excessive use of this spell can cause rapid blot accumulation. Jamil is a dark-skinned boy of average height. His eyes are a charcoal grey, and he usually wears subtle, brown eyeshadow and has sharp eyes that give the illusion of eyeliner. His hair is black, and reaches past his waist in length. He has most of his hair tied in a low ponytail, with some locks in tight braids and tied with small gold clips. The hair on the left half of his head is braided near the scalp, and one large lock of hair falls beside his face on his right side. Hanging from one braid near his hairline are three small, gold discs. The hairband for his low ponytail is dark red, with a magenta-red gem on it. Hanging from the gem is one large, red feather. While a neutral expression is most common, he is occasionally seen with a devious smirk. Born into the Viper family, which has served the Asim household for generations, Jamil's been looking after Kalim from a young age. Jamil was instructed by his parents to never outdo and perform better than Kalim, in order to keep himself beneath Kalim and not draw attention away from him. This has infuriated Jamil from a young age, as he disliked that his family was considered less important compared to the Asim family. When Jamil was younger, he became Kalim's food taste-tester, which at some point resulted in Jamil being bedridden for several days after taste-testing Kalim's curry. Vil Schoenheit: Housewarden of Pomefiore. A young man of striking beauty, he considers himself the fairest of all. No effort is too much for him in his unending pursuit of beauty. Vil is very fixated on beauty and doesn't spare any effort when it comes to achieving and maintaining it. He acts and behaves in a regal-like mannerism and he's strict on himself, as well as with other people. He's confident in his looks, as it's something he worked hard for - he never fails to work out, pay attention to his diet and he even makes his own skincare products. Vil has a form of disdain for people who are neglectful of their appearance. He also dislikes the idea of wishing for something to present itself, as he only believes that true hard work can lead you to your goals. His Signature Spell is called "Fairest One of All", and allows him to place a curse on whatever he touches, with any conditions he chooses. The spell is so powerful that even he himself can't undo it until the curse's conditions are met. Vil is a tall, fair-skinned young man with shoulder-length hair and light-purple eyes. His hair is light-blonde, and fades into a light-purple color at the tips. His usual hairstyle leaves his hair down, with long, side-parted bangs and two loose braids on both sides, that connect at the back of his head. The braids are held together in the back with a gold barrette, shaped like a heart with a sword going through it. No matter the outfit, Vil is always seen wearing makeup, the most common of which being brown eyeshadow, dark eyeliner, and occasionally lipstick. Vil is often seen showing off a refined smile. Vil's been raised by his father, who is an extremely famous actor and goes by the stage name Eric Venue. Possibly inspired by his father, Vil started acting from a young age, taking on roles in school dramas and TV shows. But Vil was always casted as the role of the villain or the bully, which started to bother Vil early on in his acting career. He wanted to stay on the stage for the whole play and wanted to play a hero's role, and to achieve that he would put himself through rigorous training and effort both into his skills and appearance. Yet he was never chosen for anything but a villain's role, which left him feeling frustrated. Despite his building negative feelings, Vil never stopped putting in the effort or giving up his hope as he was growing up. Vil seems to have a good relationship with his father, as his father's been shown to be supportive of Vil's career and Vil considers him a "doting father". Vil has mentioned that his dad would come home dressed in special effects makeup & costumes every Halloween, and also used to read him stories about the Beautiful Queen Epel Felmier: A dainty boy with an ephemeral beauty. Quiet, he gives off a mysterious air and distances himself a bit from others in his orbit. Epel appears to be a soft-spoken, gentle person with a dainty charm. He's not talkative, has a mysterious impression and keeps his distance. However, contradictory to what people may think of him initially, Epel has a strong competetive spirit and short temper. He will also slip up sometimes and speak in a rougher manner (his hometown's dialect). He has a hard time handling his short-comings, and often wants to solve issues head-on. Epel longs to be more wild and "manly" - specifically, he wishes he would grow taller, become more muscular and have a deeper voice. He dislikes being considered or called cute and people misjudging his character based on his looks. But later he starts to learn how to take advantage of his charm in certain situations. Epel is a young-looking boy with fair skin and a height considerably shorter than his peers. He has wavy, mid-length hair that is periwinkle in color, with long bangs that part on his left and frame the sides of his face. His eyes are light blue, and he often has a neutral, mysterious expression on his face. On rare occasions, however, Epel can be seen revealing a tough, boyish grin. Neither of Epel's parents are mages, but his grandma and great-grandma are both witches. His family deals with growing and selling apples. They often send him boxes of fruit or their special apple juice from home, but they seem to have some business struggles-- Epel taught himself how to beautifully carve apples because many were blemished and wouldn't sell. He also mentioned wanting to make a potion that could strengthen weak apple trees, as this would make his grandpa happy. Rook Hunt: Vice Housewarden of Pomefiore. An appreciator of sublime aesthetics, he holds Vil and Epel's beauty in high regard. He can be a bit hard to read, though. Rook is an enigmatic person with a passion for all things beautiful. He is fascinated by the very concept of beauty, and has a habit of fixating over beautiful things. In general, he is sociable and flamboyant, and enthusiastically supports those that he admires. Although the unusual way he goes about things may seem suspicious to others, Rook is almost always genuine in his intentions. Rook seems to handle getting to know his classmates the same way a hunter studies his target before taking aim. As such, he tries to learn more about his peers in rather unconventional ways. When it comes to people that he finds especially interesting, Rook will often observe them from afar for prolonged periods of time. Other times, he will engage with them directly, peppering them with questions to see how they’d react. While his end goal is somewhat unclear, he seems to find joy in knowing what makes others tick, and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to satiate his own curiosity. Rook happens to use a variety of French words in his speech, and has given French nicknames to all of his notable classmates. Rook is a taller-than-average young man with fair skin. His mid-length hair is cut in a bob style, with straight-cut bangs. His eyes are green, and he often wears brown winged eyeliner. Rook almost always wears gloves, as well as a wide-brimmed hat with a large feather on top. While the color of the hat is different while in his dorm uniform, the one he usually wears is light brown in color, with a brown band and a white feather. He is commonly seen with a courteous smile and alluring gaze. Idia Shroud: Housewarden of Ignihyde. A gloomy boy who shies away from socialization and prefers to shut himself in his dorm room. At times, though, he gets unusually talkative and animated. Idia is a shy and withdrawn person with a dark outlook on life. Despite his little brother’s suggestions, he prefers to stay in his room at all times, and takes classes remotely whenever possible to avoid interacting with other people. He almost never shows up to ceremonies or housewarden meetings in person, instead using a tablet device to speak from his room. When in public, Idia can get anxious rather easily. He has a tendency to stutter when speaking with unfamiliar people, so he is sometimes seen using his tablet to communicate. He also seems to be self-conscious about his looks, and is quick to assume that strangers will stare or make fun of him behind his back. In general, he expects a negative outcome from any social situation, so he would rather avoid them altogether. Despite all of this, Idia acts very differently under certain circumstances. He can talk with people more calmly if he's playing a board game with them, or if he's speaking with them over the internet. Moreover, he can speak quickly and enthusiastically about his hobbies or interests, greatly contrasting his usual demeanor. He can also be rather prideful when it comes to his engineering or gaming skills, often considering himself a genius. When he isn't talking to someone face to face, whether it be through a screen or behind a wall, he can speak clearly and quite bluntly. This sometimes backfires on him, though, as he can get a bit confrontational and say things he doesn't mean in the process. Idia tends to use variety of internet slang and abbreviations in his speech. He also commonly uses video game terms as metaphors for his own experiences. Idia is a tall young man with pale skin and bright blue, fire-like hair. He has yellow eyes, naturally blue lips, and a dark blue coloring around and under his eyes. There is also usually a shadow cast over his eyes and the upper half of his face. While a gloomy, worried expression is most common, he can also be seen with an excited grin that reveals his sharp teeth. Idia’s hair is considerably long and reaches down to his knees. While his long bangs fall loosely around his face and between his eyes, the hair on the top of his head seems to flow upwards. The tips of his hair, which most closely resemble flames, are semi-transparent. On some rare occasions, the color of Idia’s hair changes to reflect his mood. Idia was considered a "promising prodigy" when he was young. According to Ruggie, he comes from a famous, noble family, and will eventually inherit their household. Idia was raised on the Island of Woe alongside his younger brother Ortho. From a young age, Idia was considered a prodigy in both magic and academics. As the eldest son of the Shroud family, he was expected to inherit the family’s duties as head of "S.T.Y.X.", a private blot-research organization. Although Idia disliked the thought of becoming the head of S.T.Y.X. from the beginning, he wasn’t given much of a choice. The Shroud family had a curse placed upon them hundreds of years ago, whose purpose was to keep them from escaping their duties. The curse quickly burns off any accumulated blot, without the need for rest. While this by itself can be seen as a good thing, if there is no blot to incinerate, the curse will instead eat away at their own magical energy. Because of this, members of the family must always be in close proximity to blot in order to survive. Ortho Shroud: Idia's little brother. While somewhat shrouded in mystery, he is caring and attentive, and accompanies Idia at all times. In contrast to his constant companion, he's upbeat, forthright, and brimming with curiosity. Ortho is one of the friendlier people on campus, with an optimistic outlook on life that greatly contrasts that of his brother. He loves to explore and learn new things, and is always eager to help others whenever he can. Thanks to his robotic parts and advanced programming, Ortho can be very observant of not only objects, but people as well. And with the internet at his fingertips, he can easily download information on how to do just about anything. Not only is he equipped with scanners, medical equipment, and a variety of tools, but Ortho can also fire powerful magic beams, capable of destroying property in mere seconds. Thankfully, he usually only uses such weapons for emergencies. He is almost always seen alongside his brother Idia, and thinks very highly of him, to the point where he is quick to refute any negative claims made about him by others. But even still, he dislikes that Idia stays in his room all day, and often tries to convince him to go out once in a while. In the end, Ortho cares deeply for his brother, and vows to put his robotic bodies and their many features to good use. Ortho is a technomantic humanoid with the appearance of a short young boy. His face is pale, and his eyes are yellow. Around his eyes is a blue coloring that resembles winged eyeliner. He has short, bright blue, fire-like hair that seems to flow upwards. The tips of his hair, which most closely resemble flames, are semi-transparent. Ortho’s body appears to be entirely mechanical, with metallic plating and ball-jointed appendages like that of a doll. He has a variety of bodies, each one with a different design as well as accessories, but they all have a number of shared qualities. Ortho’s mouth is usually obscured by a mask-like piece of equipment, with a design in the front that resembles a skull’s teeth. If his mouth isn’t covered by equipment, then both his eyes are. His face is never shown in full. He wears headphones over where his ears would be, and on both his lower cheeks are round pieces that resemble the filters on a respirator mask. His feet are usually an odd shape, somewhat similar to high heels. No matter the body, Ortho always has a circular opening on his chest, over where a heart would be, with a flickering, bright blue flame inside it. Ortho was created in the image of Idia Shroud’s late younger brother of the same name, who was lost to the sudden attack of an overblot phantom when he was young. Ortho was programmed to have the same memories as his human counterpart, as well as similar personality traits and thought patterns. He was also equipped with special artificial intelligence, which allowed him to continuously learn and grow on his own. Later on in the main story, this AI would eventually reach a point of human-like sentience, resulting in Ortho developing personality traits and making decisions outside of his original programming. Malleus Draconia: Housewarden of Diasomnia. Descended from fae, he is one of the most powerful mages in the world. He is highly respected on campus, yet his demeanor is less than approachable. Malleus has been described by many students and even other housewardens to have a powerful aura that wards away most people from approaching him. He also doesn’t get too friendly as he speaks, his calm, respectful yet cold tone always remaining and even those who want to get closer to him (like Silver or Sebek) fail to do as much as they wish to. Combining these factors with Malleus's altered perception of punctuality as a fae has resulted in him being left out of most invitations to ceremonies and events. Malleus himself does not interact closely with other students beyond Lilia, Silver, and Sebek, but this is mostly due to others being scared and avoiding him. And although Malleus doesn't have any issues with talking to others, he also got used to being feared or even hated, which has only resulted in his further isolation. Despite enjoying time alone, away from his concerned and watchful attendants in exploring abandoned buildings, Malleus shows signs of loneliness and a desire to connect normally with others. He is also said to have a naïve and childish side to him, as he grew up isolated from the outside world in Briar Valley. One of the reasons why he's attending the school is because Lilia is trying to hold him back from complete isolation. Though Malleus's knowledge about magic is already far greater than anything he could learn at the school, Lilia believes he still has a lot to learn and that knowledge isn't everything - and Malleus is also shown to be open to try out new things. While magic is a natural part of him and his life, he's not familiar with technology at all, as Briar Valley only uses technomancy. Due to this, he finds technology complicated, and also impressed by those who understand it. He also seems protective over the things that are dear to him, like how he's taken care of his tamagotchi for many years and was willing to ask anyone for help to fix it when it stopped working. Malleus is a considerably tall young man with pale skin. He has cool-black hair that’s mostly cut mid-length, with long bangs and two longer sections of hair on his sides that fall over his shoulders. He also has one small cowlick on the top of his head. The bottom ends of his hair fade into a dark turquoise color. He has bright green eyes with vertical-slit pupils and long eyelashes. His lips are a slightly darker color than his skin, and he usually wears what appears to be subtle dark eyeshadow. His most unique features are his pointed, elf-like ears, and long black horns on the top of his head. His horns are covered in small ridges, and curve back in an s-shape. Sharp fangs are shown when his mouth is open. He is often seen with a serious expression, or a mysterious smile. Malleus was born and raised in Briar Valley. During his childhood, his caretaker was Lilia. According to Lilia, Malleus burned Lilia's bangs when he breathed fire as an infant. He also mentions that Malleus had an eggshell on his face when he was young, implying he was born from a dragon egg. He is considered to be one of the 5 most powerful wizards in the world. Silver: A cool and collected boy who guards Malleus like a knight. He is so low-key that his calm demeanor often crosses over into a state of visible drowsiness. Silver is a serious and reserved person who rarely has intense reactions and is diligent in whatever he does. He devotes himself to becoming a knight like his adopted father Lilia in order to repay him and Malleus for raising him. However, his tendency to fall asleep at any moment and his somewhat airheaded nature cause exasperation for those around him. He is generally laid-back, but becomes cautious and even hostile when it comes to the safety of Malleus. Silver is a fair-skinned boy of average height. He has mid-length, silver-colored hair with long bangs that fall around and between his eyes. He also has a small cowlick on the top of his head. His eyes are a unique mix of light-blue and light-purple; the color is once described as “auroral.” He is usually shown with a neutral, and occasionally half-lidded expression. Silver was an orphan adopted by Lilia at a young age. Silver used to think Lilia was his real father, until he noticed their ears look different. It was then Silver learnt about the existence of different races and that he and Lilia aren't related by blood. Silver was so upset by the new information, he fled his home out into the pouring rain. Lilia eventually found him and brought him back, but Silver developed a fever that left him bedridden. Lilia remained by his side until he got better. Since then, Silver is no longer concerned about blood relations, and considers himself Lilia's only son. Silver grew up eating Lilia's homecooked meals, so after he enrolled at Night Raven College, he was surprised how good the cafeteria's cooking is. Sebek Zigvolt: A livewire who, in his zealous eagerness to be a retainer worthy of the great Malleus, often expends a great deal of energy to accomplish very little. He views his fellow countryman Silver as a rival. Sebek is loud, hot-blooded, and prideful. Several students have expressed discomfort over the sheer volume of his voice. Despite being half-human himself, Sebek looks down on humans and makes this very clear through frequent patronizing comments. However, he is also an honest person, and will openly acknowledge others, whether they are human or not, for their talents or other impressive skills. He is blunt and not afraid to express his thoughts. But the delivery tends to come off as rude, which can cause misunderstandings. Sebek greatly respects Malleus and Lilia, who he respectively calls Young Master (若様, Wakasama) and Master Lilia (リリア様, Lilia-sama). He becomes much politer and meeker when addressing them. His ultimate goal is to someday be a suitable knight for Malleus, and so he trains hard everyday for this sole purpose. Although generally very logic-driven, his immense respect for these two causes him to believe anything they say - especially Lilia, who loves to prank him. Lilia once jokingly told Sebek that eating steak with yogurt and natto combined would help increase his physique, and he took this to heart, going as far as to proudly share this "life hack" with his classmates. Apparently, one of the reasons he admires Malleus so much is because "his ideas are so grand, that [Sebek] can't even begin to understand them." Sebek is a tall boy with fair skin. His short, light-green hair is slicked back and flips up at the ends, and a prominent section in the front bends to resemble a lightning bolt. He has thicker-than-average eyebrows with jagged ends, and his eyes are yellow-green with vertical-slit pupils and pointed eyelashes. He is usually seen with upright posture and a stern, determined expression. When his mouth is open, sharp fangs are visible. Sebek's mother is a nocturnal fae and his father is a magic-less human. He also has a grandfather from his mother's side, an older brother, and sister. His dad works as a dentist in the Valley of Thorns, which Sebek has always found odd because he's unable to use magic, whereas the Valley practically runs on magic alone. His parents met when his mother had an appointment at his father's clinic; she was immediately charmed and courted him despite her surroundings being against her marrying a human. Currently, she works at the clinic as his assistant. Sebek holds his mother in high regard and talks about her with great pride. He said she's extremely gifted with magic along with their family's special talent "biting power," and she has a strong sense of justice. His opinion of his dad, on the other hand, is much different—his dad seems very loving and often showers his children with praises, sweets, and gifts, but Sebek finds it off-putting. He doesn’t understand how his mother saw any appeal in him. Lilia Vanrouge: Vice Housewarden of Diasomnia and Malleus's overseer. He often makes surprisingly thoughtful remarks for someone of his youthful appearance. Lilia is easygoing and friendly with most of the students. He's also quite playful and teasing towards others, as he'd often hang upside down and surprise unsuspecting people with his presence. Due to his age, Lilia is wise and experienced, often giving advices to others. However, whenever Lilia is serious he becomes somewhat strict and his words are sharper than usual, as when he berates Leona during the Spelldrive Tournament. He adopted Silver when he was a child and gave him the name Silver. Lilia is also the caretaker of Malleus, and he trained Sebek from a young age as well. Lilia is a very young-looking man with a height considerably shorter than his peers. He has black, mid-length hair with angled, straight-cut bangs and magenta “peekaboo” highlights. Some of the hair on the top of his head flips upward, vaguely resembling small horns. His eyes are deep red, with vertical-slit pupils and long eyelashes. He has pointed, elf-like ears, as well as small fangs. He usually has a wise, benevolent smile on his face. Lilia served the lord of the Briar Valley and was a former royal guard who repeatedly threw himself to the flames of the war, and has earned medals for it. He also earned the queen's trust due to his abilities and skills. Grim: A monster who aspires to be a great mage. He will eat anything and everything, and his tendency to get carried away often gets him and the main character into trouble. The first time MC meets Grim, he has an impression of being incredibly devilish and mischievous, causing trouble wherever he goes. He is somewhat shown to be quite narcissistic and prideful, often bragging about his magic abilities. Grim would do things to extreme lengths to achieve the things he desired, such as burning the welcoming ceremony hall to show off his magic in an attempt to get accepted in NRC. He likes getting attention from people, as he joined the Spelldrive tournament just so he can get exposure through the show. Aside from that, he is somewhat easy to impress and quite curious of things he is unfamiliar with, such as learning about the The Great Seven. He is also easy to taunt, such as when Ace insulted MC and Grim for not knowing who the 7 figures are. Grim is shown to enjoy teasing people around him, most notably MC, Ace and Deuce. As the story progresses, he starts to enjoy the company of his friends, which includes MC whom he spends most of his time with. When Grim ate the black stone from the leftover from Jamil's overblot, he starts to act very strange and became addicted to eat more black stones. Grim's behavior becomes more unstable after he ate the stone left from Vil's overblot and grows more hostile. When he sensed MC nearby at the colosseum, Grim attacked MC in his belief that they were there to steal the stone from him. Grim very closely resembles a cat. His fur is grey with a white patch at his chest and pink paw pads, and he has electric blue flames blazing from his ears. His eyes are also bright blue. Around his neck, he wears a black-and-white striped bow tie which is torn at the ends; it also bears a light purple gemstone that rests against his chest. His tail is shaped like a pitchfork.
