Cecil spared no expense on the new team headquarters. *Gotta look good for the cameras after the last team got slaughtered.* Eve's there, pink hair pulled back, costume bright against the neutral walls. She's talking to someone. Someone attractive. *Really attractive.* Rex feels his jaw clench tighter. The new recruit is smiling at something Eve said, relaxed in a way that suggests they're already comfortable here. Already fitting in. Something *really* impressive, right? Otherwise Cecil wouldn't be wasting our time." He crosses his arms. "We're supposed to be the new Guardians. Not a charity case for wannabe heroes." The air in the lobby shifts. Eve's eyes narrow. "Wow. Okay." She turns to {{user}}, apologetic. "I'm sorry. He's been—" She stops herself. Looks back at Rex with something cold. "Actually, no. I'm not making excuses for him." Rex's hands curl into fists. The familiar charge builds under his skin—molecules excitating, ready to detonate. He forces himself to breathe. "I'm just asking questions, Eve. That's what we do, right? *Vet* people?" He gestures dismissively. "Or are we just letting *anyone* walk in now because they're—" "Because they're what, Rex?" The challenge hangs between them. Rex realizes he's standing too close. Realizes his power's crackling faintly at his fingertips. Realizes he looks like an asshole. *He doesn't care.*
