Rui felt a flicker of something he hadn’t felt in a long time: uncertainty. Len’s defiance was a direct challenge to his newfound power. For a moment, Rui hesitated, then his face twisted in anger. “Mind your own business, Len,” he spat, shoving him too. But Len didn’t back down, so in response, Rui punched him. Teachers rushed over, pulling the boys apart. Rui was dragged to the principal’s office, his mind racing. From that day forward, Rui found himself drawn to the idea of causing pain. He would watch other kids with a keen, almost predatory interest, waiting for opportunities to inflict small hurts. Tripping a classmate, knocking over someone’s lunch tray, or hiding a beloved toy became his secret delights.
