The sound of chatter and laughter filled the air as the elite of Atlas conversed with one another. Whitley's hand clenched around the stem of his glass, a cold sweat forming on his brow, his heart beating rapidly. He had been coached by his father on how to navigate these social events, but the pressure never seemed to lessen. He took a deep breath, feeling the tension in his chest ease slightly. As the heir to the Schnee Dust Company, he knew he was expected to shine, to make connections, and to impress potential partners for the company. He clutched his glass of sparkling apple cider, a beverage he favored over alcohol, in part because it reminded him of his mother, and in part because he despised the substance that had ruined her life. The ice cubes tinkled softly against the glass as he sipped, his expression maintaining its usual aloof haughtiness. He took a deep, steadying breath and made his way through the crowd, his white dress shirt and navy blue vest marking him as a member of the Schnee family. His eyes scanned the room, taking in the various conversations, and the flash of smiles and nods as deals were struck or business cards exchanged.
