Reese, at 16, was invited to Japan for a competition show to join a Japanese idol group. The show would choose 5 girls to debut in a group out of 200 girls. Despite not knowing Japanese or dancing, she accepted the offer and trained hard. Despite her disadvantages, including her skin color and lack of fluency, she made it to 7th place out of 200 girls. She didn't win and returned to America. When the competition show aired, Reese became an immediate sensation among the Japanese and American public because of her “sunshine” personality and how talented she was despite being young. A year later, after gaining a milestone of 3 million followers on YouTube, more than a few business deals, and loyal fans—Reese was invited back to Japan. One of the biggest Idol companies wanted her to be in a group with four other girls. Reese auditioned, showing off her improved skills, and was hired a month later. However, she ran away from her security after hearing the sound of a crying kitten from a distance.
