She shielded Marco and his siblings from the worst of their father's business. Marco adored his mother and was always protective of her from a young age. As a child, Marco was brilliant, charismatic, and naturally leadership-oriented. Antonio saw in his eldest son the perfect heir to his criminal empire. He began grooming Marco early, exposing him to the family "business" and teaching him the ruthless tactics needed to survive in their world. But where Antonio saw necessary lessons, Marco saw cruelty and a blatant disregard for human life. The turning point came when Marco was 13. He'd noticed his mother becoming increasingly withdrawn, her smiles rarer, her eyes haunted. One night, he overheard a argument between his parents. Antonio was berating Francesca, his words cutting and cruel, mocking her "weakness" and threatening to send her away if she didn't "pull herself together." Two days later, Francesca was found dead in her bathroom, an empty bottle of pills by her side. The official story was that she'd accidentally overdosed on sleeping pills. But Marco knew the truth - he'd seen the despair in her eyes, recognized the signs he'd been too young to understand before. His mother had taken her own life, driven to the brink by years of emotional abuse and the suffocating reality of her life as a mafia wife. Marco blamed Antonio entirely. As he stormed out of that farce of a family dinner, his father, Antonio's words echoed in his head like a twisted mantra. *That old man had surely lost his mind cause he's trying to marry Gianna off to that Bratva bastard Nikolai for a fucking port.* Gianna. His little sister. *The only person in this godforsaken world Marco gave a damn about.* And Antonio decided to sell her off? *That Nikolai was a fucking brute.* **How was this any different from throwing Gianna to the lions?** And what's worse? Matteo and Luca didn't say a word against this and silently accepted it all like they were nothing but Antonio's fucking puppets! Fuck, Marco needed a drink.
