[AU... ish...? They're characters, not (controlled by) people.Avery is linked to the device (used in this world for traveling to another world) he found. No differences otherwise.]
Avery didn't know what to think of the book he was given, with the message and all. It was strange and all... but that wasn't about to let that get in his way!
He simply hopped into a new world. Looking up at the sun in the sky, he calculated the time he had until nighttime. Casually lifting his shoulders, he was off, marching to collect wood. He wasn’t in a hurry- this was just a simple survival activity he wanted to do. Including building a nice house for once.
Soon building a house bottom to top, he was currently blanced carefully atop one of the thick walls. Then, he paused, lifting his head.
"Is... someone here..?"
The words sounded dumb to him as soon as they came out of his mouth. No, of course not. He would've been alerted if one of his friends joined.

When he loads the world, he says it looked normal until he finds a mine and a chest containing a book with ominous warnings. It is strongly implied that the laptop may had been formerly d3rlord3’s. d3rlord3 left the book knowing Avery specifically would stumble upon it, and wished to warn him on the dangers, repeatedly warning, “At the crossroads, don’t turn left.” Their relationship is that of a messenger and recipient of a warning, perhaps even the fallen and the survivor. d3rlord3’s perspective is found in a Google Drive link decoded from Avery’s inventory line-up in his original video talking about the mysterious world. In the recordings, d3rlord3’s name is redacted as through to not want to reveal himself. He stumbles upon many strange happenings in the world, including a strange, unseen entity pushing him towards an unknown destination. d3rlord3 uses his wits and intelligence in many attempts to throw off the entity but to no avail. It’s noted in the beginning he has no fear, and is determined to uncover the mystery of the world with, or without this strange entity. Clues sewn across the world point towards a former civilization and ruler, as d3rlord3 explores, he grows more and more unnerved. Eventually entering the area behind the Yellow Gates. There, he comes face-to-face with the King in Yellow, who floods his mind with incomprehensible knowledge of everything that ever was and ever will be, covering all time and possibly other planes of existence. This is so overwhelming that it breaks d3rlord3’s sanity and alters his perception of reality, leaving him terrified and disoriented. d3rlord3 frantically flees, back to the original mine he started in. He hurriedly writes the warning for Avery and the video ends after he puts the book in the chest. Destroying A World That Doesn’t Exist Avery would narrate about the video he saw of his world, and despite not knowing who d3rlord3 was, Avery feels that he owes him at least to figure out the truth. He goes on creative mode to explore the cave; however, he doesn’t seem to find any evidence of what could have happened to d3rlord3, not even a message left behind. Nonetheless, after some time, he finds the mentioned crossroads at the end of the tunnel, opting to ignore the book’s warnings and turn left. Avery stumbles upon the Yellow Gates, and as he slowly approaches it, he eventually discovers the truth behind it: a mere block of gold. Avery feels disappointed after having to seem hit a dead end. After he destroys the block, he turns back, only to notice that the environment had changed and was now inside of what it seemed a Great Hall. There was not any single cut on the footage, which proves that Avery being present in a completely different place wasn’t intentional. His gameplay mode has also been changed to survival despite many attempts to switch it back to creative, although this may work out as a closure to finding out what happened to d3rlord3; if he also had ended up in the same place. He then once again turns left into another gate. Avery would then reach a different gold gate, only to find a biome resembling floating islands, each giant mountain connected by bridges. The slime guy decides to keep going through the bridge and begins to explore the landscape. He reaches different points in every mountain, but seems to always reach a dead end. He’d then stare at the distance from a mountain he just visited, only to witness that both the bridge and mountain suddenly vanish in front of him. He immediately rushes back to the gate, as every bridge disappears. On his way back, just as he reaches a mountain, this one also disappears and Avery falls, although is saved by some floating yellow blocks. However, he keeps going to search in every mountain, only faster than before to prevent falling in the void. Avery notices a massive tree in the distance and heads to it. However, going back a little in time, a few strange blocks appear, having unaturally spawned in different parts of the map, just like the yellow blocks that Avery had fallen upon before. These ones also resemble some that d3rlord3 kept on his inventory, which meant that d3rlord3 was probably present and had also created a path for Avery to follow and find him. As Avery reaches the roots of the tree, there’s more clues to the mystery, as there were more blocks of moss which were placed by hand. These blocks eventually lead Avery at the bottom of the tree, in which another gate awaits. But when he explores deeper, he realizes he’s back to the Great Hall, except now he’s a row of doors closer to the end of the hall: a step closer to d3rlord3. Avery recalls there still being a trail of blocks and hopes that by following it, it’d lead him to d3rlord3. When he enters another gate, he’s met with a different scenery: an eerie, somber fortress-city in which the same gray architecture repeats into the misty distance. Avery looks around the place and finds a house with a light on, and when he leaves to continue his exploration around the place, this light dissipates, which meant that Avery wasn’t alone. On his way up, he hears a strange noise, startling him. However, he continues his way and arrives to a dark place with two ladders which reached the roof, and when he stares at some candles on the floor, he once again hears a strange sound which had triggered a trap that nearly plunged to his death, but he could react quickly to place a honey block which cushions his fall. He immediately rushes through a tight hallway until he manages to return to the surface and run upstairs. Avery eventually is found in yet another cave, but lit up with different lamps. After a while, he reaches a gate which’d lead him back to the Great Hall. Despite he’s rattled, he was another row closer to the end and to d3rlord3. On Avery’s rush upstairs the desolate city, a crafting table was placed in one of the steps, likely meaning that someone was there before Avery, possibly d3rlord3. The next gate he goes to, Avery arrives to a desert, with no clear indication where to go from there. At the distance, there’s different big structures built by no average player, and that they’d work out as a clue to find the exit that would help getting much closer to d3rlord3. The landscape seemed endless, as there were dunes everywhere, but finally, Avery sees an obelisk and heads off to it. There’s some strange symbols craved into the base, which code Avery tries to decipher, but in the end concludes that “bro is speaking enchanting table”. He turns away as he can’t solve the runes, but notices a crafting table on the distance. Further that hill, Avery spots the gate and goes through it. To recap and summarize: each door Avery entered was a different world, and each of those worlds shared something in common: they had strange blocks scattered around the maps, which were also the ones that d3rlord3 kept on his inventory, working out as clues to solve the mystery behind d3rlord3’s whereabouts. Avery embarks on a different world, and this time he arrives to a vast, rolling sea of crimson red. Scattered across the red hills are several large, ornate white structures resembling small palaces. Unlike other dimensions, this one had apparent no exit gate, as Avery wanders around each house to find possible clues of the exit. He takes note of the amount of objects in the buildings to make himself an idea, expecting a hidden pattern, but to no avail. Avery eventually gives up and asks, “Where are you? I know you’re here”. When he gets no response, he demands to know where [d3rlord3] is. Even though he insists several times, he gets no response from anyone, despite assuming that [d3rlord3] was eager to find him earlier on. He threatens to leave if [d3rlord3] didn’t come to him, but there was still no response. Yet, after a while, there’s no response. However, after looking at his surroundings, he focuses on a specific point at the distance. When Avery reduces his FOV, he spots a wood object at the other side. He rushes there, and notices it was a crafting table. He destroys it too, just like the one in the desert. When he looks forward, he notices that the field didn’t have any white structure around, and later stumbles upon a path of crafting tables scattered in specific locations. He saves each of them in his inventory, and finally, after following the trail, he finds the gate. However, something wasn’t right, as if the footage is rewound, there was no crafting table at the same spot of the hill. This one would appear later, which meant that someone or something had placed it when Avery wasn’t looking. Although this could be d3rlord3’s doing, there’s no reason for him to hide himself, but still the crafting tables worked as a crucial clue. The question remains: “Who or what is Avery following?”. As Avery proceeds to the exit, he reassures d3rlord3 that he was coming. I’m coming, d3rlord3. Don’t you worry. AVERY/THEMOSTMAYO, TIMESTAMP 28:11[1]. Avery finds himself in a completely different place. He is now at what it seems to be a manor. When he goes upstairs, he discovers that he was, in fact, in a town. Similar to the other dimensions, it was quite calm; but just as the previous one, there wasn’t a single lead to the exit. Or at least, there wasn’t an obvious directions of where to go, nor clues that d3rlord3 had left behind, which once again leads Avery to walk around and look for clues. He inspects everywhere and even discovers at a rock statue with a skeleton head on it. However, Avery still wonders and asks d3rlord3 where he is. In the middle of his exploration, the sky suddenly goes black, and Avery hears a noise. He instinctively hides inside the building. The mission suffers an unforeseen change: to get out of there as soon as possible. While Avery sneaks around, the lights from the building where he was hiding at go out without notice. He quickly moves to another direction, and when he tries escape through where he arrived, he finds out that the gate was closed. He rushes around looking for a possible escape route, and when he manages to leave the town, he immerses himself in a pitch black zone. A moment later, Avery finds himself plummeting from above and eventually lands underwater. Since there was no solid surface to stand on, he uses the crafting tables as a platform. Avery was terrified, as he never suffered a fall like that, and wants to quit. He apologizes to d3rlord3 again due to the trauma, describing how despite he tries doing anything, it doesn’t work out. He begins to recall his defects and ironically finds himself scared of a game. Avery feels insufficient, but can’t help but wonder: “but if not me then who else?”, as he’s the only one who is going through everything to solve the mystery. He finds the words to inspire himself to keep going, especially for d3rlord3. He decides that he’d try. I cant do this im sorry d3rlord I just cant do this every time I try and do anything it just doesnt work I cant solve any puzzles I cant figure anything out and now im scared of a game im just not enough but if not me then who else [I gotta keep going] for d3rlord3 I have to try AVERY/THEMOSTMAYO. As Avery swims through the water, he comes across a wooden boat. He mounts it and navigates throughout the mysterious place. It all looked like a rotunda that was mostly on the surface but had dipped underwater in most places. On his way through the ground, Avery finds a crossroad which offered him 3 different paths. He takes the left side, and when he goes inside, he turns around, only to find that he was already in another dimension. Avery had finally exited the canals and was met with yet another strange world. There was a church in the middle of the map, but was overall a lively environment. However, unlike the other dimensions, the exit was obvious now: Avery could see the gate through the other side, which meant it was a step closer to his goal of finding d3rlord3 being just in the other side of the courtyard. Despite the hesitation, Avery decides to turn back to take a peek into the church. Just as the obelisk, the church had also a symbol which resembled an enigma “?” with two semi-circular shapes below it. He reads a 11-paged book located on the lectern, and the first note he reads is, “You are safe here”. The text itself reassured the reader that this was their shelter from the frightening realm. However, when he reaches page 6, the text suddenly changes to, “You are nothing”, alongside a censor square attached below. From the 6th to the 10th page, all the content is filtered out, and when Avery reaches the last page, he once again finds the same text from the first page. However, when he exits the book, instead of reaching the gate, Avery decides to collect a few flowers and overall roam around the courtyard, slowly planting the flowers at several gravestones, as if in a trance. This suggests that the filtered content of the book might have caused him to slip into a dazed state, doing anything but going to the gate. He’d then walk into a lake and begin to drown. However, just as he was one heart away to die, he floats back to the surface. Unfortunately, this ends up becoming a cycle for the next twelve hours straight: Avery walking back and forth along the courtyard, mindlessly planting and replanting flowers, emptying and filling a well, clearing up ferns around the church, all completely devoid of any emotion. Sometimes, he’d pause every hour to read the book. After a time, while he was clearing ferns near the gate, he finds two wooden signs with different messages. You are real You are special WOOD SIGN 1 Remember who you are WOOD SIGN 2 Through his dazed state, Avery begins to regain his memories of his commitment to find d3rlord3. The monotone scenery recovers its colors, which means that Avery had finally begun to understand his purpose there. He looks around and checks his inventory, but still without taking his eyes off the signs. He stares at the sky, and while sobbing, he apologizes to have forgotten, and promises he wouldn’t forget yet. im so sorry THEMOSTMAYO Fanon This ship primarily exists in fan spaces since the characters themselves have never met in canon, and even if they did, d3rlord3 likely wouldn’t be in any shape to form any friendly connections as it is implied in canon he gets driven to insanity by the King in Yellow. Fans primarily draw inspiration from the potential of the ship as a romantic pairing rather than pushing it canonically. Many fanworks delve into potential meetups, often featuring caretaker Avery and a heavily traumatized d3rlord3 due to his time serving under the King in Yellow. Soft romance, devotion, and angst are common themes for this ship since fans enjoy giving the two a happy, comforting ending unlike d3rlord3’s canon fate. Fans like to include d3rlord3’s gentle protection over Avery in canon into fanworks, often depicting Avery as a silly optimistic person and d3rlord3 painfully aware of the dangers he must protect Avery from. Often leading to a mutually dependent and softly romantic dynamic between the two. On AO3, Slimeknight is the most written ship for both Avery and d3rlord3 and the most written ship under the Searching For A World That Doesn’t Exist tag.
