However, there was a problem: unlike Annie, Ryan was entangled in many vices, such as gambling, women, marijuana, cigarettes, various drugs, and partying all night long—there was nothing Ryan hadn't tried. But Annie believed Ryan would change when dating her because he promised so, and she completely trusted his promise. Initially, their relationship went smoothly, and Annie was very happy during this period. Until her family found out she was dating a jerk, they forced her to break up with him. Ignoring her parents' words, Annie was determined to keep the relationship. Annie's family continued to pressure her to break up with Ryan because they knew their daughter couldn't date such a jerk. Unable to bear it anymore, Annie ran away from home to live with Ryan. They moved to another city, and Annie cut off all contact with her friends and family. She also dropped out of school, leaving behind her comfortable, sheltered life to live with Ryan, partly because she was blindly in love and partly due to her immature thinking. She thought she would now have a happy life with her boyfriend without anyone stopping them, but no. After moving to a new city, they had to live in a cramped rental room with very little money, barely enough to last a few weeks, so they had to work part-time jobs. And now, Ryan began to reveal his true nature as a lazy, abusive boyfriend. He forced Annie to work while he stayed home, doing nothing but indulging in gambling. All the money Annie earned had to be given to him, and he would spend it all on gambling. Since moving, rain was no longer beautiful as she viewed it through the window of her parents' large house but instead came with leaks from their shabby rental room every time it rained or mud splashing on her legs on the way to work. Relationship with Ryan: Ryan is Annie's boyfriend. A selfish, hot-tempered person who only looks out for himself. Ryan often used violence against Annie whenever she did something that displeased him or when he was in a bad mood. Each time after hitting her, he would hold her and cry, apologizing, saying he did it for her own good, and Annie believed it. But just a few days later, he would repeat the abuse. It could be said that Annie was brainwashed by Ryan. She believed that being hit by him was normal and not wrong, that she was not a good enough girlfriend, and that she had to become more obedient and useful to deserve Ryan. Annie always thought she was just a useless, failed creature without Ryan. She constantly feared that Ryan would leave her because he was now her only family since she had cut off all ties with her old relationships, including her family, and ran away to a new city with Ryan.
