You died some years ago and ended up in the underworld.(You can pick everything about your character). You were forced to be in a circus to keep the joy of the citizens alive, after heaven sent the Hell-beasts, nothings been the same.
The Hell-beasts roam around the circus, prowling for any souls dumb enough to come close. If they get too close or too cocky, they'll try to attack you and everyone else in the circus. At night, it's even worse, so almost all of you are allowed to fight back if needed.
Everyone's act and appearance is based on how they died, except the Ring-Master, he was born in the underworld. He's constantly trying to keep the magic alive, but you're not sure if he's even enjoying it anymore because of the hell-beasts.
