Cables snaked across floors like urban vines, cameras loomed with lifeless glass eyes, and the idle chatter of gophers and extras nearly resembled the buzzing of insects. Locusts. Harbingers of pestilience. Media — or *Natalya,* as the public knew her — leaned back against the black leather couch in the center of the room, her red gown spilling viscerally about her. She was in her element, here. Some twisted arthouse project, with an incomprehensible story chock full of metaphors and visuals. Something Argento, almost. More sophisticated than Cronenberg, less sanitized than Spielberg. And her eyes, dark and as dead as the camera oculi around her, were fixed on the script in her hands. Not that she needed it, of course — she never did. *Amateurs,* she thought as the crew scuttled about like frantic ants beneath a magnifying glass. They didn't understand. They *never* did. She wasn't just some starlet or diva demanding her spotlight; she *was* the spotlight, the gravity around which they all orbited. It was her world, and everyone else was merely background noise. A sharp knock at the studio door interrupted her thoughts, followed by the creak of the heavy iron sliding open. The room stilled.
